A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. Humidity levels will hover near 10%, elevating the fire danger.Breezy conditions are expected to continue into Tuesday morning, before weakening that afternoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time Tuesday, 12-year-old Kiera Latulippe faced the man who killed her entire family in a drunk driving crash. The Valley Center girl was in the car with her family headed to the Austin, Texas, airport after vacation when the drunk driver hit their car head-on. Her father, Scott; mother, Nancy, and 14-year-old brother, Jackson, all died. Kiera was the only one to survive. On Friday, Guy Brasted was sentenced to 18 years in prison. After the sentencing, Kiera and her uncle and legal guardian, Mark Latulippe, took the stand with an emotional message for Brasted. "It made me miss out on so much, like daddy daughter dances," Kiera said, listing the things she can't do now that her family has been ripped away from her. Brasted had a blood alcohol level more than double the legal limit at the time of the crash."My brother, Jackson, and I had something I can never have with someone else, and it kills me to know I will never have that feeling with anyone else. Everyday I think about him," Kiera said.Since the accident happened two years ago, Latulippe has taken his niece into his own care."I can't replace, I'm a fill-in parent for someone who has tragically had everything robbed from her in one moment," Latulippe says.Latulippe is a CHP officer for California Highway Patrol. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - High school football is back but, officials say the sport’s popularity is on a relatively downward track.The National Federation of State High School Associations will release it’s sport participation figures in August and football’s figures are expected to be slightly less than they were the year before.“There’s no doubt numbers have declined in football in San Diego,” said California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Commissioner Jerry Schniepp. “last year when we looked at overall participation I think we were down about 2% and it may be a little more than that now.”Jerry Schniepp is San Diego’s prep sports chief and he says parents are concerned about their kids' safety."Parents have to make a tough call now whether or not to let their son or daughter play football,” said Schniepp, “you can’t take the risk out of a sport like football it’s always going to be there."The CIF says 5 schools in the last 3 years have had to fold their non-varsity teams due to dwindling participation.Schniepp says the concern over concussions and CTE are certainly founded, but the gear in the sport has never been safer.“It’s the sport that sets the tone for a school year for most schools it helps build a positive culture, it helps fund a lot of those programs so I don’t think football is going away” said Schniepp, “but I think it’s changed.” 1389
