LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California health officials have released guidelines for elementary schools to seek waivers allowing them to offer classroom instruction in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.Officials on Monday said some public and private schools in 38 counties on a state watch list, including San Diego County, can seek waivers from local health officials if they have plans for keeping students and staff safe and meet certain criteria.But the state says school reopenings can't be considered in counties with the highest rates of COVID-19 infection. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California environmental officials say a popular agricultural pesticide they say has been linked to brain damage in children will be banned after next year under an agreement reached with its manufacturer.Under the deal announced Wednesday, all California sales of chlorpyrifos will end on Feb. 6, 2020.Farmers will have until the end of 2020 to exhaust their supplies.The pesticide is used on numerous crops in the nation's largest agriculture-producing state, including alfalfa, almonds, citrus, cotton, grapes and walnuts.State regulators say the pesticide has been linked to health defects in children, including brain impairment.Officials say they are budgeting million to help manufacturers develop a safer alternative.The pesticide's manufacturer, Corteva Agriscience, says it reached the agreement "in the best interests of the affected growers." 884

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Broadway soprano Rebecca Luker has died at 59. She was a three-time Tony-nominated actor who starred in some of the biggest Broadway hits of the past three decades. Sarah Fargo, her agent, says Luker died Wednesday. The actor went public in 2020 saying she had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, known as ALS. Luker was the best actress Tony nominee in 1995 playing Magnolia in “Showboat,” the best actress nominee in 2000 for playing Marian in “The Music Man” opposite Craig Bierko, and a best-featured actress nominee in 2007 as Winifred Banks in “Mary Poppins.”Tributes for Luker flooded in after news broke of her passing away.
