BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left Beijing on Wednesday for the 10th annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) scheduled for June 10-11 in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent.Hu will also pay state visits to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan as guest of Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev respectively.Established in 2001, the regional body SCO now groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

BRASILIA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Tuesday, expressing the government's regret over the tragedy caused by mudslides in northwest China's Gansu province."The Brazilian government learned with deep regret of the avalanches" that killed at least 1,117 people, with 627 missing in China's Gansu province, the statement said.Brazil also expressed its solidarity with the Chinese government and people, offering condolences to the families of the victims.The devastating landslide, which occurred Saturday in Zhouqu City, Gansu province, also destroyed numerous houses and buildings.So far, a total of 567 survivors have received treatment while 64 seriously injured have been hospitalized, according to the provincial civil affairs bureau.

HONG KONG, Aug.12 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong stocks slipped nearly 190 points Thursday as heavyweight HSBC dropped 1.84 percent.The benchmark Hang Seng Index dropped 188.83 points, or 0.89 percent, to close at 21,105.71 points, after trading between a day high of 21,124.98 points and a day low of 20,926.48 points.Turnover totaled 67.83 billion HK dollars (8.73 billion US dollars), compared with Wednesday's 61.36 billion HK dollars.The H-Share Index dropped 140.61 points, or 1.2 percent, to end at 11,597.02 points.Banking giant HSBC edged down 1.84 percent to close at 80 HK dollars, after a plunge occurred on Wall Street overnight for concerns on global economy.China Mobile, China's dominant mobile carrier, moved up 2.44 percent, to end at 84.1 HK dollars.Major mainland lenders dipped. YICHANG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam was tested for the second time this month when the swiftest water flow of the year hurtled down the swollen Yangtze River on Wednesday morning.Flow rates as high as 56,000 cubic meters per second were recorded at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, dam engineers said.The dam withstood the flow with a water discharge rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, meaning 16,000 cubic meters of water per second accumulated in the reservoir behind the dam.The safety monitoring results of the dam during the second flood peak have met engineers' predictions to prove its ability to contain flood waters, said Cao Guangjing, chairman of the China Three Gorges Corporation.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 158 meters at 8 a.m.Wednesday, about 17 meters below its maximum capacity of 175 meters.Officials expect the water level to rise to 161.5 meters Friday, a spokesman with the Yangtze River hydrology bureau said Wednesday.Continuous downpours in recent weeks have raised water levels in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.Water flows on the river's upper reaches reached 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20 -- the highest level since the dam was completed last year and 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.Ship traffic through the dam resumed last Thursday after the first peak flow passed. But shipping was halted again at 10 p.m. Tuesday as the second round of floodwaters approached.After shipping service was suspended, a road near the dam was opened for vehicles to transport goods and people across the dam. 

BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese banks should set up an independent risk management system in line with its strategic expansion plan as part of efforts to ward off financial risks, China's banking regulator said Wednesday.The breakout of the global financial crisis highlighted the necessity of increasing management of differentiated sovereign risks, the China Banking Regulatory Commission said in a guideline published on its website.Just as Chinese banks were expanding throughout the world, the overseas risks they were facing were on the rise, the guideline noted.Sovereign risks refer to ones that banks are exposed to when overseas borrowers or debtors are unable to repay debt because of their countries' economic, political and social changes.Chinese lenders were required to differentiate risks according to the countries involved and make policies on the minimum potential loan loss provisions ranging from 0.5 percent to 50 percent, according to the guideline.The banks must meet the requirements under the guideline by June 1, 2011.
