In 1989 Valenzuela won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, a seven-time winner of the Breeders' Cup races.But he’s been sidelined on the track for personal and drug abuse problems and fined 28 times in his career.His California license was permanently revoked at one point. A new study states that calculating every dog year isn't equal to 7 human years.That's because your dog ages differently than you.Researchers at the University of California San Diego’s school of medicine said in a news release that a 1-year-old dog is similar to a 30-year-old person. But a 4-year-old pup is identical to a 52-year-old human."The formula is based on the changing patterns of methyl groups in dog and human genomes — how many of these chemical tags and where they’re located — as they age," researchers said in the release. "Since the two species don’t age at the same rate over their lifespans, it turns out it’s not a perfectly linear comparison, as the 1:7 years rule-of-thumb would suggest."This graph formula, which was created from the study, will match up the age of your dog with the comparable human age.Lead researcher Trey Ideker said that dogs that are younger age faster compared to humans.“This makes sense when you think about it — after all, a nine-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1:7 ratio wasn’t an accurate measure of age," Ideker said.For the new study, which was published in the journal Cell Systems, samples of blood from 105 Labrador retrievers were studied.Researchers plan to study other dog breeds to see if their method holds up. 1359

(CNS) - A verdict has been reached in the trial of a woman and her gun instructor who are accused of carrying out a plan to kill the woman's estranged husband.A jury has found Diana Lovejoy, 44, guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Welcon McDavid Jr. was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, but the reading of the verdict had to be postponed because Lovejoy passed out. Lovejoy and McDavid Jr. were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder in the Sept. 1, 2016, attack on 45-year-old Greg Mulvihill, who was wounded in the 11 p.m. shooting in Carlsbad.Police allege Lovejoy and McDavid planned the crime and that the latter - - who worked at a gun range where Lovejoy was taking marksmanship lessons -- called the victim, arranged to meet him in the alley and opened fire on him with a rifle while hiding in a patch of bushes.Court records indicated Lovejoy and Mulvihill were in the midst of a contentious divorce, and that she had obtained a restraining order against him on accusations of emotional and sexual abuse.Mulvihill took the stand during the trial and described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and, at first, he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the shooter in front of him.Mulvihill testified about a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife.Mulvihill said he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad out of desperation, fearing Lovejoy would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat, but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him.Before he knew what was happening, Mulvihill said he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back. Jordan Middle School in Sandy, Utah, Dr. Matt Watts is everything you would expect a junior high school principal to be.Watts is a bit light-hearted.“Hey dude, how was the birthday?” Watts asked a passing student.However, he is always thinking of the well-being of his students.“Whoa guys, please be careful,” he said as he passed a couple of boys roughhousing in the halls.This year, the safety of students all over the country looks different than past school years.“If you walk around the school, you’ll see we’ve got arrows on the floors, signs up everything and even a maximum occupancy in bathrooms,” Watts said.Of course, there is also the mandatory school staple: masks.“That was probably one of the biggest things I was worried about, but the kids have done a fantastic job.”Mt. Jordan Middle school is one of the few schools in the country operating on a normal schedule of five days a week and in-person learning. However, it comes with its challenges.“One of the challenging things has been for teachers to find the balance with physical distancing and still taking care of the kids and kid’s social emotional needs,” Watts said.Teachers like Lindsay Maxfield are being tasked with the delicate balance of keeping their kids on track educationally, while being sensitive to the uncertainty of it all.“The (students) have been able to have a lot of really good discussion, which at the beginning of the year with their masks they were a lot quieter,” teacher Lindsay Maxfield said. “I’ve noticed they’re getting more comfortable speaking out with their masks. That has been a really cool thing to see.”Maxfield knows that at any moment, the teaching model could change and move to an online curriculum.“I didn’t think through all the online different tech issues that sometimes you need to teach the students,” Maxfield said. “Sometimes, we assume that they know how to do everything because they’re so techy and that kind of thing.”As the temperatures start to drop, the possibility of more cases hangs in the air.“A concern now is that it’s getting cold,” Watts said. “We’ve been letting kids eat outside so they can be distant and have that fresh air and now, but the cold is making us rethink what the cafeteria is going to look like.”For now, the school is beating the odds with very few cases of COVID-19.“When we have had to send some kids home, that gets tough because they want to be here,” Watts said.Lifelong educators dealing with a once-in-a-ifetime test, committed to keeping their doors open for as long as possible. 2580
