Amazon’s deal to acquire Whole Foods for .7 billion is sending far-reaching ripples across Wall Street, well beyond the grocery industry, affecting other Seattle tech companies.
Amazon’s overall shipping costs have ballooned in recent years as the company aims to speed up delivery, both with products purchased on Amazon.com and via Prime Now, such as Whole Foods orders. During Q3, Amazon spent a whopping .6 billion globally on shipping, up 46 percent year-over-year, and 7 million more than what the company spent in the 2018 holiday quarter.

Amazon’s latest misstep is the abrupt, and still unexplained, shuttering of TenMarks, a math and writing software startup it purchased in 2013 and announced in 2018 it would close the following year, leading to a lot of frustrated, Twittering teachers. That was preceded by the forever-in-beta Amazon Inspire, an educational resource sharing site launched in 2016 but kicked hard in the knees immediately afterward, when a handful of copyrighted items were found posted on it. A year later, the company also lost its K-12 education general manager, who had come to Amazon with the TenMarks acquisition.
Among the dead, 60 were killed in landslides and floods. Search and rescue is still underway for the missing people.
Amazon’s investment follows its product announcements last week that included a new Alexa-enabled microwave, clock, and audio-related devices for the home as the tech giant aims to get its voice platform everywhere. Earlier this year, it paid a reported billion to acquire home security company Ring.
