BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China and South Africa pledged Friday to step up legislative cooperation to cement the bilateral strategic partnership.The pledge came out of the meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa Max Sisulu in Beijing.Hu said growing China-South Africa relations require stronger collaboration between the legislatures of the two countries.Hu hoped the two legislatures could launch their regular exchange mechanism at an appropriate time and work to improve such mechanism.Sisulu said the the National Assembly of South Africa hoped to make a new contribution to boosting cooperation between the two countries.On China-South Africa relations, Hu said bilateral relations have "reaped good harvests" since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1998.Sisulu agreed with Hu's comments, saying China's remarkable progress contributes to world peace and development and inspires South Africa and other African countries.Also Friday, Wu Bangguo, chairman of China's National People's Congress(NPC) Standing Committee, held hour-long talks with Sisulu at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.Wu said the NPC and the National Assembly of South Africa have a good foundation for cooperation, and urged the two legislatures to maintain exchanges at a high level.While calling for the two legislatures to work more closely in regional and international legislative organizations, Wu said a regular exchange mechanism should be launched as early as possible so as to improve ties between the legislatures of the two countries.Sisulu said the National Assembly of South Africa and the NPC of China should strengthen bilateral exchanges and seek closer cooperation in multilateral legislative organizations.As South Africa is a big country in Africa and an important emerging economy, China hopes to communicate more and coordinate with South Africa over Sino-African cooperation so as to advance China-Africa relations and South-South cooperation, Wu said.The visit to China was Sisulu's first since he was elected to the position of speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa in May 2009.Apart from Beijing, Sisulu will also visit the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest.

BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese general Thursday met with the head of a leading U.S. think tank and discussed the building of strong military ties between the two countries, despite military exchanges between the two nations having been frozen since January."A sound and stable China-U.S. military relationship is good for bilateral strategic trust and regional peace and stability," Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Ma Xiaotian told John Hamre, president of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).Hamre served as the U.S. deputy secretary of defense during the Clinton administration before joining CSIS in 2000.Hamre is in China at the invitation of a leading Chinese think tank, the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, for an academic symposium."China has always attached great importance to developing military ties with the United States and has made efforts in this regard," Ma told Hamre."Stronger military-to-military ties will be a very good thing for the two countries...We should have broader and deeper contact," Hamre said.On growing bilateral military ties, Ma proposed both sides respect each other's core interests and major concerns.Both sides should also properly handle differences and sensitive issues, Ma added.Hamre said China's prosperity contributes to the world, adding that the PLA's development is "logical."The former U.S. defense official said it is necessary for the two militaries to maintain candid communication to keep stable military relations.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday.The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. BRASILIA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim, Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie arrived on Tuesday in the Brazilian Air Base to begin a goodwill visit to the South American country.In a written speech released upon his arrival, Liang, also Chinese state councilor, offered his sincere greetings and good wishes to the Brazilian people and armed forces on behalf of the Chinese Ministry of National Defense and the Chinese People's Liberation Army.Liang said the aim of his visit is to strengthen mutual understanding between the two armies, deepen friendship, promote cooperation, and explore more areas for cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries.Liang said that China is keen to develop bilateral relations of the armies, to deepen military cooperation with Brazilian side, to promote relations between the two countries, and devote their due contributions to safeguarding international and regional stability and safety.During his stay here, Liang will also meet his Brazilian counterpart Nelson Jobim and other high-ranking officials in Brazil.
