OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Anyone browsing through 101 Marketplace in Oceanside will find an assortment of items for sale on the shelves and show floor.The antique and consignment store opened just two weeks ago amid a business landscape struck by the pandemic. But owner, Roy Cisneros is optimistic about the future."If today is the worst day, tomorrow has got to be better," Cisneros said. Cisneros describes himself as naturally optimistic. That optimism has helped him get to where he is now."We've been homeless for two years, me, my wife, and my kids," Cisneros said. Cisneros, a father of five, says he says it didn't take much to fall into homelessness. "You get behind in rent, that's all it takes, really, and then you are living in hotels."He says they hit rock bottom in 2019 when his wife and his kids had to stay in a shelter."We were like, 'You get in the shelters, I'll sleep in the car, we'll figure this out, we'll save some money that way,'" Cisneros said.At one point, Cisneros worked as many as three jobs at one time to make ends meet and save up just enough."I had saved up a little bit of money from 2019; we purchased a little tiny trailer, we stayed in the trailer for about six months," he said.In August, he discovered that space on 101 S Coast Highway was available and affordable. Cisneros says it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Though he heard of businesses struggling and closing because of the pandemic, Roy decided to bet on the days ahead."We took all of our savings, we sold the trailer, we got the store, and we're doing it," he said.Cisneros says he and his family are currently still living in a hotel, but he says that could change very soon."If you keep trying, eventually you'll get there," he said.Roy says they plan to give back to their community. They plan to donate some of their profits to a north county organization that helps the homeless. The petition suggests Disney should re-theme the ride around "Princess and the Frog." Tiana, the main character in the film, is recognized for being Disney's first African-American princess.The petition had more than 8,000 signatures as of Thursday morning. The petition's current goal is set at 10,000 signatures.The call for change comes as the country continues to hold discussions surrounding racial injustice in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis police custody.Floyd's death caught the nation's attention after bystander video showed the 46-year-old man struggling to breathe while in police custody in late May. The video showed a white police officer, later identified as Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes.Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder before charges were upgraded to second-degree murder. He's also charged with manslaughter.The three other officers involved in Floyd's arrest — Tou Thao, J. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California prosecutor says she's reopening an investigation into the killing of a 22-year-old Black man at a train station by a transit officer 11 years ago. Oscar Grant was shot and killed by a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer on New Year's Day in 2009. The officer was charged with murder, found guilty of a lesser charge, and served 11 months in jail. Grant's family wants charges to be filed against another officer who pinned Grant down with a knee to his neck in a manner similar to that used in the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) - When an earthquake strikes seconds of warning can save lives. That's why, for decades, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has been working with partners to create a warning system to do just that. "Eventually we would like to have something like an Amber Alert where you would get a text message that says shaking is about to occur in your area in a few seconds," said Alex Cadiao, a USGS Field Engineer.He's part of a small team which travels to remote parts of the state to install earthquake sensors into the ground. They provided 10News exclusive access to the region's newest sensor in Orange County. RELATED: 'ShakeAlert' message buzzes San Diego County phones"Ultimately we just want a grid across the whole state," said Christopher Bruton, Research Engineer at Caltech's Seismological Laboratory. There are 45 sensors throughout San Diego County, and dozens more are planned for the rest of Southern California. "The more sensors we have, the better the data, the greater coverage we have and better the quality, and faster response time of these stations," said Cadiao. The sensors work by detecting the initial, less-destructive waves of an earthquake, alerting people shaking is coming and to take cover.Seconds of warning can be critical for surgeons in the operating room, halting trains, or shutting off gas lines. The City of Los Angeles currently has the ShakeAlert app available to people in the city; the hope is that technology will eventually work statewide. "I get a lot of gratification knowing one day this will help save a lot of lives," said Cadiao. The engineers say it will likely be a few more years until all of Southern California will get ShakeAlert warnings on their cell phones. OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Two cars overturned into an embankment off Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton Sunday, but the people inside both vehicles were able to escape without serious injuries.A silver car lost control and sideswiped another car on northbound I-5 past Las Pulgas Road shortly after 11 a.m., California Highway Patrol dispatchers were told.Several drivers pulled over to help, and the people inside both cars were able to get out before CHP officers and fire personnel got to the scene, according to a CHP incident log.At least one person was hurt, but the injuries were described as minor. 609
