BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The import and export of electronic and information products in China went down 30.3 percent year on year in the first two months, data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed on Friday.     The combined import and export value was 87.61 billion U.S. dollars through January to February.     In breakdown, export fell 26.1 percent from the same time a year ago to 53.55 billion U.S. dollars. Import was down 36.07 percent to 34.06 billion U.S. dollars.     The import value of LCD panel, a main component in flat-panel television, declined 48.8 percent to 1.82 billion U.S. dollars.     The export value of processing trade with imported material, which comprised more than two thirds of the total export, was down 25.4 percent to 37.86 billion U.S. dollars.     China's export, a driving force of the world's third largest economy, plummeted 25.7 percent year on year in February, the worst decline in more than a decade, as global demand deteriorated amid the deepening recession.

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met Thursday with the Premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Yong Il.     Hu reviewed 60 years of China-DPRK ties, saying the friendship, initiated and fostered by the older generation of leaders, had withstood the test of international and domestic changes.     "The friendship, which has kept developing, has become the common treasure of both nations," Hu said. China would like to work with the DPRK for a better good-neighbor cooperation.     Kim came to China on an official goodwill visit and launched the China-DPRK Friendship Year in Beijing, a year-long exchange program marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.     "We should take the opportunity of the friendship year to carry forward our traditional friendship, deepen strategic communication and promote substantive cooperation for a stronger bilateral relations," Hu said.     On the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, Hu said a question confronting all parties concerned was how to overcome what he termed the current difficulties and resume the six-party talks at an early date.     "We hope parties concerned will take the overall situation into consideration and properly resolve the differences in a bid to promote the further progress of the talks," Hu said.     Initiated in 2003, the talks involve China, the DPRK, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan. The last round of talks, held in Beijing in December, failed to make any substantive progress.     Kim, who was on his first visit to China since taking office in April 2007, hailed the deeply rooted DPRK-China friendship.     "Under the leadership of both countries, DPRK-China relations have developed soundly in recent years," Kim said.     He said the DPRK would unswervingly develop friendly cooperation with China and carry forward the bilateral traditional friendship.     "The DPRK will, as always, make unremitting efforts to cement and develop friendly ties with China," he said.     Kim said the DPRK people were happy about the significant achievements the Chinese people had made in economic and social development.     During his five-day visit, Kim first traveled to east China's Shandong Province and talked with his Chinese counterpart, Wen Jiabao, Wednesday.

RIYADH, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said Wednesday that China will seek an early free trade agreement (FTA) with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).     "The FTA is in the fundamental and long-term interests of both sides and will help deepen their mutually beneficial cooperation and achieve common development," Hu said during a meeting with GCC Secretary General Abdul Rahman Al-Attiya in Riyadh, where the council is headquartered.     "China will work actively toward signing the agreement at an early date," Hu said. MOSCOW, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Top think tanks from Russia and China discussed a wide range of security issues of common concern at a two-day seminar that ended here Sunday.     participants at the seminar exchanged ideas on world economic and political trend, the situation in Central Asia, and prospects for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) under the global security framework.     The seminar, "Russia and China in a new era," was co-chaired by China Institute for International Strategic Studies (CIISS) and Russian Council for Foreign and Defense Policy (CFDP).     Xiong Guangkai, chairman of the CIISS, and Sergei Karaganov, head of the CFDP, attended the meeting.     Participants in the meeting agreed that the current world is ata stage of profound change and major readjustment. The ongoing financial crisis has led to greater instability in global and regional situation. Yet, the world will continue to move towards multi-polarization despite emerging complexities in global situation.     Both sides believed that safeguarding security and stability in Central Asia serves the common strategic interests of China and Russia, and is also a necessity for deepening the two countries' strategic cooperation.     They also agreed the SCO, as a new organization of regional security cooperation, not only accords with fundamental interests of all the SCO members, but also contributes to regional and global peace and security. WASHINGTON, March 24 (Xinhua) -- In a gross interference in China's internal affairs, the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to adopt a resolution arrogantly recognizing the so-called "30th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act."     The Taiwan Relations Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in 1979, required the United States "to provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character." China has never recognized the legitimacy of the act.     On Feb. 25, two days after the so-called Resolution 55, named Recognizing the 30th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, was referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs of the U.S. Congress by 17 representatives, China voiced strong dissatisfaction and lodged solemn representations to the United States over the issue.     "A handful of representatives from the U.S. Congress" had proposed the resolution "despite China's clear opposition," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu in a press release dated Feb. 25.     It is known to all that the "so-called" Taiwan Relations Act, enacted unilaterally by the United States, had gravely violated the basic norms guiding international relations, said Ma. It also violated the United States' serious commitment to China and intervened in China's internal affairs, he added.     "The Chinese government and people opposed the act strongly from the day it was worked out," he stressed.     It is widely recognized by the international community that Taiwan, an island province separated from the mainland as a result of the Chinese civil war in the late 1940s, is an integral part of China.
