SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego International Airport broke its passenger traffic record for the fifth consecutive year, serving roughly 24 million passengers in 2018, the Airport Authority announced Friday.The total -- up nearly 10 percent over last year -- included one million international passengers, a 19 percent jump from 2017, according to the Airport Authority, which credited several airlines' expanded service and airport-wide traffic increases for the new record.``This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,'' said Kim Becker, the airport's president and CEO. ``With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.''Airlines servicing the airport added 16 new routes throughout the year and 15 of the airport's 17 airlines saw overall traffic increases.According to the Airport Authority, Southwest Airlines added 794,401 passengers from 2017 to 2018, the most of any airline flying out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate will unveil 190 new parking spaces in the congested Convoy District in Kearny Mesa Tuesday before the City Council reviews that neighborhood's community plan."If you've been to the Convoy District, you know that finding a parking space can be extremely challenging," Cate said."My office has unwaveringly supported the small businesses in this hub for Asian cuisine and culture. To ensure this community project came to fruition, we spent countless days working side-by-side with business owners to ensure they were included in this process. Angled parking is the tip of the iceberg for the entire Kearny Mesa Community Plan process."Kearny Mesa was founded in 1937. Over the past eight decades, the commercially and industrially dense neighborhood has transformed into an iconic San Diego community, featuring the Convoy District, which recently formed a "Pan Asian Cultural District."Cate, in June of 2016, began the process of implementing angled parking in the Convoy District at the community's request. Two years later during his State of the District address, he announced the installation of 200 angled parking spaces would immediately begin.A total of 190 angled parking spaces have been added in the neighborhood, including 45 on Dagget Street, 80 on Vickers Street and 65 on Opportunity Road.The existing community plan for Kearny Mesa has not been updated since 1992. For the past two years, the San Diego's Planning Department has led the Kearny Mesa Community Plan update to determine how Kearny Mesa will develop in the future. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for two men who carjacked a man at gunpoint in the parking lot of the Mission Valley mall.It happened around 7:35 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Nordstrom Rack at 1640 Camino Del Rio North, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A man, whose age was not immediately available, was sitting in his blue 2007 Hyundai Sonata -- with California license plate 5XXK569 -- when two men approached the driver's side of his car, Buttle said.One of the men pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the victim, demanding he give up his car, the officer said.The victim got out of the car and both men got in, then one of the men noticed the man's cell phone in the vehicle and demanded the passcode before the pair fled eastbound on Camino De La Reina in the Hyundai, Buttle said. 853

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Rail service along the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo rail corridor will again be suspended Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday from Oceanside to San Diego for track and signal improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.The scheduled rail work in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Carlsbad and San Diego is the second of two weekend-long closures for track and signal improvements along the LOSSAN corridor. Rail service was also suspended from Oct. 13 to Oct. 15. Rail service for the four railroads affected by the closures -- the North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and freight line BNSF -- is expected to resume Monday for morning commute hours, albeit with possible delays.Track crews in Cardiff-by-the-Sea will replace rail ties as part of a double-tracking project to add a second rail track between Cardiff-by-the-Sea to the San Elijo Lagoon. Work crews connected the second line to the existing track last month. Workers will also update the rail signals at the Chesterfield Drive grade crossing.MAP: Traffic conditions around San Diego County Crews in Carlsbad plan to prepare the NCTD Coaster Poinsettia Station for a new western alignment of the existing track as well as move existing rail signals at the station to more optimal locations. The .7 million Poinsettia Station Improvements Project "will lengthen and elevate passenger platforms, install a fence between the tracks within the station, relocate a section of the existing tracks, and replace the existing at-grade rail crossings with an undercrossing featuring stairways and ADA compliance ramps on both sides of the tracks," according to SANDAG, which expects the project to be completed in 2020.Crews in San Diego will work on improvements to the San Diego River Bridge and structures along the Elvira to Morena Double Track Project. In addition, NCTD crews and San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System will make improvements to track crossings at the Old Town Transit Center.The rail work is part of SANDAG's Build NCC (North Coast Corridor) program, a 40-year, 0 million effort to repair and expand vehicle and rail transportation infrastructure throughout San Diego County.
