She still remembers it like it was yesterday.D.H. approached the Safe Haven Baby Box and pulled it open, watching a little orange backpack filled with resources for surrendering mothers fall out as she placed her newborn inside.Safe Haven Baby Boxes are in four states currently and offer parents a way to safely surrender their newborns.With her baby girl, a handwritten letter would convey the heartbreak, agony, and love of the mother who placed her inside that box. D.H. still says it was the hardest decision she has ever made in her life.We've heard from mothers who have adopted the babies placed in Safe Haven Baby Boxes, but for the first time, we're hearing from a mother on the other side of the box.D.H. is sharing her story to help fight the stigma that seems to follow the mothers who have surrendered their children."These mothers come from all walks of life," Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said. "We have had a Registered Nurse come through our program, a mom with four kids, a single mom, and career dads. This option of surrendering is available to anyone who finds themselves in a crisis if they feel this is the best option for them.""After a mom calls us, the first thing she wants to know is 'Is my baby safe and is my baby healthy'. That speaks volumes about these moms. These moms absolutely love their children; they are just in a crisis that you or I may not understand," Kelsey said.For the safety of the mother and to protect the identity of the child, we will not be using the woman's name in this story.Her StoryD.H.'s story began several months earlier when she found herself unexpectedly pregnant and dealing with outside circumstances she had no control over.This baby wasn't her first, but it would have been the first D.H. would have had to raise as a single mother while trying to navigate a new life she had very little control over.D.H. felt ashamed and alone."Obviously, I knew I was pregnant, and I was trying to decide what I was going to do," D.H. said. "If I was going to try to do it … be a mom … and I just knew that I wasn't going to be capable of it. It wasn't possible. Financially, and all the things I was going through, I wasn't going to be able to do it."Weeks before she was due, D.H. found herself online researching what options she might have once the baby was born. She still hadn't told anyone she was pregnant."I'm still not sure how I kept it a secret," she said.D.H. was working long days —up to 14 hours at a time — throughout her pregnancy while she tried to get her life back in order. She still wasn't sure what to do about the child she would soon birth.Then one morning, just 30 minutes before she was supposed to be at work, the labor began.By the time D.H. thought about calling an ambulance, she knew she wouldn't make it to the hospital in time.After six hours of labor, she gave birth — alone — to a beautiful baby girl.She called her Mila. 2939

Sometimes physical pain is well worth the emotional relief.For a sex trafficking survivor, who did not want to be identified, getting the tattoo on the back her leg that says “Daddy’s Girl” covered up, the impact goes much further than skin deep. It helps erase the pain from her past.“It feels really good, but it hurts really bad,” she said.Tattoo cover-up sessions like these are organized and paid for by Atlanta Redemption Ink, a nonprofit started by Jessica Lamb.“We work with sex trafficking survivors, former gang members, former self harmers and individuals that are in recovery that have marks from addiction,” Lamb said.Since 2017, Atlanta Redemption Ink has helped hundreds of people cover up marks from their past.Tattoo artists like Crystal Boyd of Pur Ink Tattoos in Alpharetta, Georgia, open their doors and donate their time and talent to become part of this healing process.“It definitely weighs on me,” Boyd said of the tattoo cover-up experiences. “A lot of them do open up and talk to me while I’m tattooing them and it’s hard not to cry.”Many of these recipients say fresh ink gives them a fresh start at life.“I feel like a brand new person not branded with somebody’s name on me,” said the tattoo coverup recipient.With her body once branded with her pimp’s name tattooed across her chest and “Cash Only” written on wrists, this sex trafficking survivor is now confident that these cover-ups will help open up a better life.“That’s me and my son” she said, while pointing out a recent cover-up. “And I got like the universe because he’s like my world; my universe.”She says before Atlanta Redemption Ink, she thought there were only two ways to get out of the sex trafficking industry: jail or deathShe says these new tattoos have given her a new life with a new goal.“I’m going to help girl like me somehow,” she said. “I don’t know how but one day I will.”To donate click here. 1911

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- Those stuck at home and going stir crazy many have begun venturing out this summer. Air and car travel have been steadily increasing in recent months and visits to lakefront resorts have been on the rise. But some worry the economic boost in tourism could be short-lived.Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, the resort town of South Haven is a drivable oasis for busy urban dwellers looking for a quick escape like Naperville, Illinois, resident Edward Marcin.“People are friendly. The water here the boats… it’s almost like going to New England in two and a half hours,” says Marcin.Scott Reinert, the executive director of the South Haven, Van Buren County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau says the tourism economy here brings in about million of revenue to the area each year.“Lodging represents a little over 20 percent of the total spend when visitors come in,” he says.But the pandemic shutdown wiped out 10 weeks of business. Revenues for the beachfront community were down 90 percent.“They essentially put us out of business,” says John Marple. He owns the Old Harbor Inn in South Haven.Forced to lay off his entire staff, Marple lost 20% of his gross income.Federal stimulus dollars he says helped him keep from going under.But once the state allowed for reopening in early June, business began booming. It took just days for rooms to sell out completely through July and even into august.“The online reservations just blew up. I had the highest sales month I ever had in June of this year,” says Marple.It’s so busy Marple has removed the inn from travel sites like Expedia and Booking.com.Today, the town is bustling with tourists. The beaches are completely packed. Housekeeping can barely keep up with the enhanced disinfecting process.“Right now, it takes us approximately 45 minutes longer to properly prepare a room for a new guest by doing all the sanitation,” says Marple.Door stickers now indicate when a room has been cleaned and that no one has been inside. But rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in many states are changing consumer attitudes towards travel plans.“With so many visitors coming in from in some cases hotspots from around the state or around the Midwest,” says Reinert. “You know, how long can we stay safe?”According to a travel survey conducted this month by Longwoods International, 76% of travelers say the will change their plans because of coronavirus. That’s up from 69% at the beginning of June. And 45% say they will cancel trips completely. That’s up from 37% in June.“The past week for sure we have seen a rash of cancellations,” says Marple.While the current increase in tourism has helped recover some losses, another shut down Marple worries could be devastating to the seasonal businesses here.“I do worry that business may not return like it has in the past. (KGTV) — A local man is hoping for answers after his mother was found murdered during a girl's trip to Turks and Caicos.Marie Kuhnla, 62, set off on the trip to a Club Med resort with her two friends and fellow public defenders in New York.Rick Kuhnla Jr. told 10news his mother was excited about the trip and recalls pestering his her to take her sunscreen because she got sunburn on a previous trip.Her friends say a few days into their trip on October 14, Marie went to her room to take nap and wasn't heard from again.Her body was discovered in bushes on the edge of the resort days later.
