BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Researchers from California, Unated States, found that sexual orientation could play a role in cancer and more gay men are reported being cancer survivors than straight men, according to findings in the journal Cancer online Monday.The researchers found that gay men are 1.9 times more likely than straight men to report having had cancer. They also found that lesbian and bisexual women are more than twice as likely as heterosexual women to report fair or poor health after having cancer.Researchers looked at three years of responses to the California Health Interview survey, which included more than 120,000 adults living in the state.Among other health-related questions, participants were asked if they had ever been diagnosed with cancer and whether they identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight.Out of 51,000 men, about 3,700 said they had been diagnosed with cancer as an adult. While over 8 percent of gay men reported a history of cancer, that figure was only 5 percent in straight men, a disparity that could not be attributed to differences in race, age or income.About 7,300 out of 71,000 women in the study had been diagnosed with cancer, but overall cancer rates did not differ among lesbian, bisexual, and straight women.Ulrike Boehmer, the study's lead author from the Boston University School of Public Health, said higher rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be related to the increased risk of cancer in gay men.However, the findings do not necessarily mean that being gay, lesbian or bisexual increases risk of cancer, said the researcher.

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The exhibition of the Chinese Terra-cotta Army here was an enormous success, project organizer Sanne Houby-Nielsen said Sunday.About 320 objects, including terra-cotta warriors from the ancient Chinese Qin Dynasty and other terra-cotta figures from Han Dynasty, were exhibited at the Far Eastern Antiquities Museum during the event, which ended Sunday.Houby-Nielsen, who is director of the museum and also director-general of the country's National Museums of World Culture, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that the total number of visitors was around 350,000, more than double the expected turnout.This was the highest number of visitors the museum has ever experienced in its history since it was established in the 1940s, said Houby-Nielsen, adding that the exhibition was originally scheduled to end on Jan. 16, but "a great pressure from the audiences" prompted the museum to extend it till Sunday."It is an exhibition which won the most audience for many years in Sweden. We feel particularly happy because it was a very good display of the story of the first emperor and the early Han Dynasty," she said."We felt such a huge interest that we have to prolong it. BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's health authorities Tuesday vowed to improve their response to food safety incidents.The ministry would issue a protocol "as early as possible" on how to respond to and investigate food safety incidents, said Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong at a national meeting on food safety in Beijing.It would also provide better training for officials and professionals working in the field, Chen said.Last year, the ministry initiated investigations into several incidents such as milk powder that allegedly caused infant girls to grow breasts and illegal soup additives by restaurants.In the milk powder case, the investigation found no evidence that Synutra International's products had caused the problem. Media reports said the company was the victim of dirty tricks by a rival firm.In addition, the ministry blacklisted 48 substances illegally added to food and 22 misused food additives last year.The ministry would include projects related to food safety in state-sponsored health programs giving free medical services to the public in next five years, Health Minister Chen Zhu said at the same meeting.But Chen did not give details about what kind of projects they will be.Under the current six state health programs, the government provides free cataract surgery for the needy, free breast and cervical examinations for rural women, free hepatitis B vaccines, free folic acid pills for rural women, new cooking stoves in rural homes to prevent fluorine poisoning caused by coal stoves as well as modern toilets for rural residents.
