Kamala Harris, D- California, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D- San Francisco, and Rep. Adam Schiff, D- California 28th District — who has sparred with President Donald Trump publicly in the past.RELATED: Workers protest outside Democratic Party ConventionRep. Schiff told 10News reporter Jon Horn that he believes Rick Gates's guilty plea will be a hot-button topic during the convention."[Mueller] now has another very important cooperating witness, somebody who was at the center of the Trump campaign, and someone who can shed a lot of light not only on Paul Manafort and the effort to launder money from Pro-Russian interests but also the inner workings of the campaign, so I think it’s a very important development," Schiff said.Gate, who is a former aide to the 2016 Trump presidential campaign, pleaded guilty this week to conspiracy and making false statements as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling during 2016's presidential election.Jon's report will air Saturday on 10News at 7 p.m.RELATED: San Diego hosts debate for gubernatorial candidatesAnother issue is likely to be gun controls, calls of which have increased in the last week following the Florida shooting at Marjory Douglas Stoneman High. Students from the school have led protests and social media calls for action from lawmakers."Our generation, their parent's generation have done them a horrible disservice by allowing the proliferation of military grade weapons onto our streets, but they’re taking matters into their own hands," Schiff said of those calling for new legislation.Sen. Dianne Feinstein slammed President Trump as she addressed attendees Saturday morning."I have never seen the presidency and I’m going to say it, as disgraced as it is today," Feinstein said.RELATED: California Democratic Party convention begins in San DiegoSaturday will feature speeches by gubernatorial candidates as well as candidates for other California offices. Programs on mobilizing women to run for office and vote, a celebration of black voters, a series of speeches by labor leaders and millennial elected and party officials are also scheduled. 2567

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students and staff at the King-Chavez Community High School Freshman academy have had a tumultuous few months.  They were displaced from their classrooms location at 1010 Second Avenue in downtown. The building closed down earlier this year for asbestos treatment, displacing many tenants including the school.RELATED: 550 San Diego city workers relocated due to asbestos“It’s been a nightmare,” Principal Kevin Bradshaw said, saying it was a very abrupt closure. “We left school on a Friday evening, came back on a Monday morning and we were locked out," he said.In a statement, the building manager said this to 10News: “We sent an email notice to all tenants immediately following notification from the regulatory agency."Bradshaw says they were not given time to move their things out of the classroom, in fact, they weren’t even allowed to retrieve their equipment. “We have televisions, computers, student’s work, teacher’s items, anything you would have in any normal campus is still in the building,” Bradshaw said. He says they’ve had to replace all those things in order to continue the education of students. The school also had to move their classes to the Boys and Girls Club in Clairemont. Bradshaw says that means they've had to bus their students to that location every day for more than two months, and the bills are racking up.He’s hoping they will be reimbursed.“The owner and all parties involved are actively evaluating the expenses associated with the shutdown,” building management told 10News in a statement. They went on to say that “the building has undergone extensive testing in accordance with the regulatory requirements for occupancy,” and is completely safe now.Bradshaw says he’s still not ready to bring students back to the building until he’s sure it’s safe and they won’t be displaced again. 1889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s elderly population, those 85 and older, is expected to soar by more than 400 percent by 2060, according to new data from the State of California. The data means many more Californians will be faced with helping their parents at the same time they’re trying to stash money away for retirement. 10News spoke with experts to take a look at ways to manage. As the population ages, more and more San Diegans will fall into the sandwich generation. RELATED: Here's where you can get a senior discount around San Diego“It’s those folks who are taking care of their parents and putting a kid thru college,” explains Yvonne Amrine, an estate planning and elder law attorney. Amrine understands. For a decade, she financially supported her mother’s care, which totaled half a million dollars. She says the bulk of the burden falls on families. “Mostly you'll be paying out of your own pocket. Medicare does not pay for long term care.”RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Woman builds granny flat to finance retirementThe county projects the cost of long-term care to rise significantly within the next 15 years. Nursing home fees are expected to reach more than 3,000 per year for a private room by 2035. Both Amrine and Linda Urbina with Golden Care have advice for the sandwich generation: Even if you’re simultaneously helping mom and dad, stay focused on a savings plan and look into your own long-term care options. “Be proactive, talk to a financial planner, the older you get the more they will cost you. Speak with a trust attorney.”RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Getting started with your financial planningAlso be sure you’ve signed the documents giving you the ability to advocate for your parents as their needs change. “It’s very important to sit down with your parents and talk about who has medical directive, and who has power of attorney.”In California, some of the costs of care are covered under Medi-Cal. RELATED: LIST: Jobs available for retirees“It cost the state a lot less to keep people in their home, where they want to be anyway. So we're hoping that pace program will keep people at home.”And there are VA benefits for both veterans and their spouses. The combined benefit can total ,100 per month. It’s also there for the surviving spouse. “That is for any veteran who served in any war.”RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Retiree rents home to earn moneyUrbina says if a family can’t afford in-home care and they want to keep their parents at home, they can consider a reverse mortgage. “We can still honor them and provide for them without going into bankruptcy.”If selling their house is the best option, make sure you have the proper paperwork in place. “Treat your parents with dignity and respect and think about how you want your kids to talk to you.” 2819
