SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the Sally Ride Forever stamp to America’s first woman in space.The first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony will take place Wednesday at the University of California San Diego, where Dr. Sally Ride taught.After the ceremony, Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego will honor her with a 6:30 p.m. panel discussion on women in leadership.Ride dazzled the nation as a trailblazing astronaut, brilliant scientist, and dedicated educator.Her journey to space began in 1977 while she was finishing her Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University. She saw an article in the student newspaper saying NASA was seeking astronaut candidates, and for the first time, women were allowed to apply.Five years later, Ride became the first American woman to reach space when she launched in the Challenger for a six-day expedition.She was 32 at the time, making her the youngest American to go to space.After retiring from NASA in 1989, she took a job as a physics professor at UC San Diego and became the director of the university’s California Space Institute.Ride used her experiences in space to explain difficult physics concepts to her students.In 2001, she co-founded Sally Ride Science, a company dedicated to fostering interest in STEM fields among children, especially girls.Ride was honored for her contributions to science and space exploration with the NASA Space Flight Medal and the NCAA's Theodore Roosevelt Award. The latest Center for World University Rankings, published Monday, examined 20,000 universities around the world and focused on quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty and research performance. For the 2019-20 CWUR rankings, UC San Diego was listed in 7th among public U.S. universities. Among all U.S. universities, the La Jolla school ranked 21st. UC San Diego’s influence and reputation is known throughout the world, with CWUR’s 2019-20 ranking the school 27th -- or among the top 0.2 percent -- in the entire world. “UC San Diego’s collaborative, interdisciplinary research culture advances the frontiers of knowledge, shapes new fields of study, and disseminates discoveries that transform lives," said Chancellor Pradeep K. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - To protect his best friend, a Sabre Springs man found himself in a brawl with a bobcat. Bobby Abrams, a 78-year-old Vietnam veteran, said it happened Saturday morning while walking his dog Sammy. The Navy veteran is in tiptop shape; he does hundreds of push-ups a day and goes on walks up to 14 miles. "Oh yea, he was snarling, arggggg, like that!" remembers Abrams. RELATED: Woman spots bobcat lurking through backyard in 4S RanchAbrams was walking on Ted Williams Parkway when he says the bobcat appeared and quickly attacked Sammy, biting him in the neck. Abrams quickly pulled the bobcat off, grabbing it by the throat and slinging it back and forth. He ultimately broke the animal's neck, killing it. Abrams was left with puncture wounds on his hands. He says he had to defend his dog and would do it again if he had to. He says their close relationship began when Abrams rescued Sammy from an abusive situation; he says they both have PTSD. "I love that dog as much as I love my momma. I love that dog, the Navy, and my momma!" said Abrams. A spokesperson says bobcats are not unusual in that area but are usually nocturnal. They speculate the animal might not have gone out that night due to bad weather and instead went out during the day.If you find yourself in a similar situation, wildlife officials say stand your ground and try to pull the animal away. They recommend avoiding going out at night when coyotes and bobcats are out. It's also advised to make loud noises and throw objects, like a rock, at the animal to try and scare it off. Officials say bobcats are typically fearful of humans. 1885
