NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says there might be no major league games this year. This comes amid a breakdown in talks between teams and the players' union on how to split up money in a season delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. The league also revealed several players have tested positive for COVID-19.Two days after union head Tony Clark declared additional negotiations futile, Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem sent a seven-page letter to players’ association chief negotiator Bruce Meyer asking the union whether it will waive the threat of legal action and tell MLB to announce a spring training report date and a regular-season schedule.“The proliferation of COVID-19 outbreaks around the country over the last week, and the fact that we already know of several 40-man roster players and staff who have tested positive, has increased the risks associated with commencing spring training in the next few weeks,” Halem wrote in his letter to Meyer, which was obtained by the Associated Press. The pandemic caused the league to stop spring training on March 12, two weeks before the start of the season. On March 26, the sides reached an agreement on how to revise their labor deal to account for the virus. Hostility has escalated since then as both sides exchange offers. 1301

NEW YORK (AP) — In a litmus test for American moviegoing in the pandemic, Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” brought in an estimated .2 million through the holiday weekend in U.S. and Canadian theaters. The result could be greeted as either the rejuvenation of U.S. cinemas — more Americans went to the movies this weekend than they have in nearly six months — or a reflection of drastically lowered standards for Hollywood’s top blockbusters given the circumstances. About 70% of U.S. movie theaters are currently open. Those in the country’s top markets, Los Angeles and New York, remain closed. Warner Bros. has emphasized that the usual opening-weekend calculus is out the window. Few onlookers felt it was possible to gauge how “Tenet” would open. The film, which cost 0 million to make and at least 0 million to market, will need to get close to 0 million to break even. The Walt Disney Co. also debut its 0 million live-action “Mulan” remake, but did so in a on-demand purchase for Disney+ subscribers. 1028
New research has found American workers took an average of 17.2 days of vacation in 2017, up almost a half-day from 2016.Project: Time Off, who are affiliated with the U.S. Travel Association, says "this marks the highest level for American vacation usage since 2010 (17.5 days) and more than a full-day increase since bottoming out at 16 days in 2014."But maybe these aren't enough days as 52 percent of Americans left an "accumulated 705 million unused days" in 2017, which has increased from 662 million in 2016.How? The increase in unused days, despite Americans taking more vacation, is attributed to employees earning more time off (23.2 days in 2017, compared to 22.6 in 2016).Further, nearly 25 percent of Americans have not taken a vacation in more than a year. Some possible barriers? 807
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors added criminal charges involving five additional victims Wednesday in the case of a California surgeon and his girlfriend who were previously charged with drugging and sexually assaulting two women. The Orange County district attorney's office said the additional charges include kidnapping and rape by use of drugs. The new charges accuse Dr. Grant Robicheaux of sexually assaulting five additional women. His girlfriend, Cerissa Riley, is now charged in three additional assaults. Details were not immediately released.Robicheaux, 38, and Riley, 31, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to all counts. A judge ordered their bail to be raised to million each, up from 0,000 each.Robicheaux once appeared in a reality TV show called "Online Dating Rituals of the American Male."When the pair was originally charged last month, prosecutors said they received leads to more than a dozen possible additional victims.Authorities said the two initial victims met Robicheaux and Riley at social events in Southern California, where they became intoxicated and ended up at Robicheaux's apartment.Robicheaux could now face a term of more than 82 years to life in prison if convicted. Riley could face 63 years to life in prison if convicted. Both had friends and family who walked up and hugged them during a break in the courtroom proceedings. During a bail discussion, Riley turned to see them in the gallery and fought back tears. Afterward, she cried in the courtroom while being hugged by supporters."Thanks for coming," she said.___Associated Press reporter John Antczak contributed to this report from Los Angeles. 1669
