TAIPEI, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), has called for calm response to the upcoming cross-Strait talks.     The SEF and the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) plan to hold new round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung city on Dec. 22.     Chiang said issues to be discussed during the talks included labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication and avoidance of double taxation.     Those issues were closely related to the health and benefits of people across the Strait, he said, adding that he hoped agreements could be reached to improve the foundation of cross-Strait relations.     It is the fourth round of talks since the SEF and the ARATS resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States are committed to working together and with other countries for a successful outcome at Copenhagen summit next month, said a joint statement issued here Tuesday after talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama.     The two sides have held a constructive and productive dialogue on the issue and maintained that international cooperation is indispensible in dealing with climate change, which poses one of the greatest challenge of the time, the statement said.     Both sides concede that transition to a low-carbon economy is an opportunity to promote continued economic growth and sustainable development in all countries.     Regarding the upcoming Copenhagen summit, the two countries expressed their willingness to strive for an agreed outcome based on the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities.     "The two sides, consistent with their national circumstances, resolve to take significant mitigation actions and recognized the important role that their countries play in promoting a sustainable outcome that will strengthen the world's ability to combat climate change," said the statement.     The two countries also agreed that the outcome should include the emission reduction targets of developed countries and nationally appropriate mitigation actions of developing countries, adding that it should also substantially scale up financial assistance to developing countries, promote technology development, dissemination and transfer, and pay particular attention to the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable countries to adapt to climate change.

BUCHAREST, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that China values its ties with Romania and is willing to work with the Romanian people to enhance cooperation and cement friendship. Xi made the remarks when meeting with people from all walks of life in Romania, including parliament leaders, government officials, former ambassadors to China and others.     The Chinese and the Romanian people enjoy profound friendship, Xi said. They have respected and supported each other and treated each other on an equal footing since the two countries established diplomatic ties 60 years ago. JINGGANGSHAN, Jiangxi, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called on the country's police and other law enforcement organs to improve their capabilities to better serve the people and rely on the people to safeguard social harmony and stability. Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a meeting attended by police chiefs during his visit to Jinggangshan, where late Chairman Mao Zedong and other revolutionists established the CPC's first rural revolutionary base in 1927, in east China's Jiangxi Province.     Law enforcement departments and police should handle public's complaints with earnest attitude, improve their credibility in law enforcement and rely on the masses of people to safeguard social harmony and stability, said Zhou, who also heads the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee.     He also called on the police officials to be innovative in their work and to strengthen the building of grassroots police organs.     Zhou visited the Jinggangshan martyrs' memorial park to pay respect to more than 48,000 revolutionary martyrs buried there, late Chairman Mao's former residence and other revolutionary sites on Tuesday.     Meng Jianzhu, Minister of Public Security who also attended the meeting, asked police departments at all levels to explore new methods for safeguarding national security and social stability.

He said the two countries should advance cooperation in this area to bring benefit to the human beings and future generations.     Wen made the remarks when meeting with participants of the Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation that began in Beijing Wednesday. The forum will last to Friday.     The forum was co-sponsored by the Chinese think tank China Institute of Strategy and Management and the Brookings Institution of the United States. Participants include Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and high-ranking officials from both governments.
