Three Denver police officers have been suspended after three separate incidents this year of arrestees being forgotten in temporary holding cells overnight. Policy requires desk officers to check on people detained in holding cells every 30 minutes and to notify a supervisor if someone has been held there for more than an hour. The holding cells are supposed to be temporary stops for arrestees before they can be transported to the city jail. Yet one woman, in custody for an unpaid traffic ticket, sat in a sparse police department holding cell for nearly 13 hours. Handcuffed to a bench, Victoria Ugalde could not reach the toilet for much of the time and had no option but to urinate on the floor.  "They forgot about me," Ugalde said. "I was looking in the camera, I was [saying] 'Can anybody help me?' And then, nobody."The desk officer who was supposed to check on Ugalde admitted he failed to notice she was there because he was wrapped up in reading a book, titled "Emotional Intelligence 2.0."He served a three-day suspension and is back on the job.The seemingly strange scenario played out twice more this year, and the police department is weighing policy changes to prevent it from happening again. "It should not have occurred," said Jess Vigil, deputy director of the Denver Department of Safety. Some countries are considering it as a strategy to combat COVID-19.But Ray said it could not work in the US unless much more effective treatments are developed.He says on average, a newly infected person infects two others, so to have herd immunity from COVID-19 about 60 percent of people would have to become immune."We would have something like another 100 million people, maybe more, infected. 150 million more and even if the major complication rate is a fraction of 1 percent, we will still have huge numbers of deaths," said Ray.He said we also don’t know if just having had the infection once will create lasting immunity to control the spread."It possible that you could be immune enough not to get sick and still not immune enough to prevent that spread and so herd immunity is a tough bar for us to aim for because not only do we need 60 percent of people to be immune but we need them to be immune in a way that prevents them from infecting other people," said Ray.The other way to achieve herd immunity would be through a vaccine."Vaccines can work better, provide better immunity than the natural infection does. Thomson International issued a voluntary recall Saturday for thousands of pounds of onions due to possible salmonella contamination.The recall includes red, yellow, white and sweet yellow varieties.The recall came a day after the CDC issued a food safety alert for onions produced by the company after nearly 400 people from 34 states had been sickened with salmonella. Fifty-nine of those who were sickened were hospitalized.According to the CDC's food alert, red onions are most likely the cause of the outbreak, but because of the way the onions are grown and harvested, other types may have been contaminated.According to the FDA, the onions were sold in mesh sacks as small as two pounds and in cartons as large as 50 pounds. They were shipped to grocery stores in all 50 states and Canada on May 1, and were sold under a variety of brand names.The CDC recommends throwing away all onions from Thomson International or its associated brands. If it's unclear who grew the onions, the CDC also recommends throwing them away.The agency also recommends cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces that may have come into contact with the onions, including countertops, refrigerator drawers, knives and cutting boards.Restaurant goers should also ask where establishments got their onions, and not order any meals with onions if it's unclear where they were produced.Salmonella usually presents with fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. People older than 65 and younger than 5 are more likely to suffer severe illness.The onions were sold under the following brand names: Thomson Premium, TLC Thomson International, Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Imperial Fresh, Kroger, Utah Onions and Food Lion. 1778
