CEO Win Cramer said they have lived the American Dream, saying they're a scrappy business always fighting to get on top."We worked out of literally, a house, or a rundown office or an apartment building forever," he said. Billions of dollars in tariffs imposed on China are going into effect, and while all of the design work is done in Carlsbad, 100% of JLab's product is shipped from China.Cramer was sitting on a plane when he saw the alert, "this news pops up on my phone that 0 billion in tariffs announced, I quickly perused the list and saw our tariff code that we import  80% of our products was on the list and I just had this feeling of oh gosh we're going to have to fight this battle that we don't know how to fight."He is bending every ear within reach to spread awareness of how this affects JLab and other American businesses and even went to Washington DC to plead his case.Cramer said no legislators were there, just staffers and no electronic devices were allowed into the room. A startup company called Cast21 has created a new type of cast that completely overhauls its plaster and fiberglass predecessors. It takes just minutes to put on and lets patients enjoy an active life, even allowing them to swim and shower with it.A couple of weeks ago, 12-year-old Jett Karrick took a hard fall during a basketball game.“He went over and stopped himself with his left hand and he ended up having a bicortical radius fracture,” said his father Tony.A trip to the emergency room put him in a traditional fiberglass cast, but he was instantly unhappy.“Was itching quite a bit,” said Karrick. “He didn't like the way it smelled, the whole drama associated with getting in the shower and the garbage bag.”An internet search led the Karricks to the innovative new cast, a futuristic sleeve that's waterproof, lightweight and breathable.“This product is completely waterproof. You can wash your hands, shower, jump into a hot tub, go to the beach, and it'll dry right off afterwards,” said Ashley Moy, CEO and co-founder of Cast21. The company believes it could make smelly and itchy plaster casts a thing of the past.The casts start with a flexible hollow net sleeve.“So, we're going to be able to move your arm and whatever orientation we need to best keep the bones and fractures in place,” said Moy.Then a proprietary liquid is pumped into the cast’s tubes.“The liquid is going to take up any of the negative space that you had in there so that we can get a really acute and comfortable fit for you,” she said.Within minutes, the cast hardens.Earlier this week, Jett got his old cast removed and a Cast21 as a replacement.“This cast just gives me a lot more freedom. It lets my hand breathe and it doesn't stink as bad.”Nine-months into production and Cast21 is available in 13 states. CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — The body of an 11-month-old girl whose disappearance prompted an Amber Alert has been found dead in a diaper box, her mother is reportedly in custody. According to WBTV, the mother, 19-year-old Breanna Lewis, had initially told officials that she was walking to her mailbox carrying her daughter when a man violently stole the baby out of her arms. The baby, Harlee Lane Lewis, was found dead a few hours later.Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the body was found inside a diaper box in a field about 1,000 yards behind a home in Chesterfield, South Carolina.Brooks says the Amber Alert was canceled “because we don’t think there was a kidnapping.” The mother was then taken into custody and is being questioned, along with other family members, according to WCIV. The mother has been charged with filing a false police report, according to WSOC. CAMP PENDLETON (CNS) - A man was killed on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton Saturday morning when his Chevrolet Suburban overturned, landed on the right side of the freeway and was struck by a second car.The deadly sequence of events happened a little before 3 a.m. on the northbound side of I-5 past Basilone Road, near San Onofre State Beach and not far from the Orange County line.A 25-year-old San Clemente man was behind the wheel of the Suburban when it left the road and went up an embankment before flipping over and coming to rest on the right shoulder, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.Shortly afterward, a Nissan Rouge driven by a 46-year-old Tijuana man approached the wreck and struck the disabled Suburban, Latulippe said.Passing drivers stopped to assist the Suburban driver, who was found unresponsive outside his car on the right shoulder.It's unclear if he exited the SUV after the initial crash, or was thrown from it during the second collision, Latulippe said.Emergency personnel from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department headed to the crash, but the Suburban driver died at the scene, Latulippe said. The man's name was not immediately released.No information on the condition of the Rogue driver was available.Drugs and alcohol were not considered to be factors in the crash, Latulippe said.Northbound lanes of I-5 were congested through the area for about an hour after the crash while officials investigated. 1460
