(KGTV) -- A World War II veteran got a big surprise Saturday morning when dozens of cars drove up to her Oceanside home to celebrate her 98th birthday.Corporal Jeri Marcot wasn't expecting too much on her birthday — maybe a call or two. ."I woke up this morning and said, 'Oh well, it's my birthday,' but wow, you made it a wow event!" Marcot said in amazement.With the help of Honor Flight San Diego, her family set up a surprise.She was taken to her birthday throne, and car after car, she waved to many of her friends and family."Today is great," Marcot's granddaughter, Janelle Stettler, said. "It's another way we are getting around the COVID restrictions where we're having a drive-by parade to celebrate her birthday,"The 98-year-old wears many hats: mother, grandmother, book worm, but also, one of America's first-ever female Marines."I was 18 when I went in the service in WWII, so that seems like a long, long time ago," Marcot laughed.Back in 1944, enlisting in the Marine Corps as a young woman was not the "cool" thing to do. Marcot says women were barely recognized as being part of the Armed Forces. But the aviation lover knew it was her duty. Since she had already taken flying lessons before enlisting, she ended up working on airplanes.Her two-and-a-half years in the service inspired people like Holly Shaffner, who served 24 years in the US Coast Guard."These women Marines, they lead the charge," Shaffner said. She now works for Honor Flight San Diego."We served, and it was great," Marcot said. "It was our turn to do that, so I'm happy I got the chance."Even after her military life, Marcot continued a life of service as a children's librarian until her retirement."She was always at the forefront," Marcot's daughter, Linda, said. "Forefront of the Marines, the forefront of starting a library in El Centro. [She's] one of these women that is an inspiration."She is such an inspiration that many of her fellow WWII veterans came by to thank her for her service and wish her a happy birthday."Look at all my friends," Marcot said. "Oh my goodness, you could write a book about all of this."Maybe when the Corporal returns to her usual peace and quiet life, the former librarian will get around to writing down her own amazing life story. ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) - When an earthquake strikes seconds of warning can save lives. That's why, for decades, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has been working with partners to create a warning system to do just that. "Eventually we would like to have something like an Amber Alert where you would get a text message that says shaking is about to occur in your area in a few seconds," said Alex Cadiao, a USGS Field Engineer.He's part of a small team which travels to remote parts of the state to install earthquake sensors into the ground. They provided 10News exclusive access to the region's newest sensor in Orange County. RELATED: 'ShakeAlert' message buzzes San Diego County phones"Ultimately we just want a grid across the whole state," said Christopher Bruton, Research Engineer at Caltech's Seismological Laboratory. There are 45 sensors throughout San Diego County, and dozens more are planned for the rest of Southern California. "The more sensors we have, the better the data, the greater coverage we have and better the quality, and faster response time of these stations," said Cadiao. The sensors work by detecting the initial, less-destructive waves of an earthquake, alerting people shaking is coming and to take cover.Seconds of warning can be critical for surgeons in the operating room, halting trains, or shutting off gas lines. The City of Los Angeles currently has the ShakeAlert app available to people in the city; the hope is that technology will eventually work statewide. "I get a lot of gratification knowing one day this will help save a lot of lives," said Cadiao. The engineers say it will likely be a few more years until all of Southern California will get ShakeAlert warnings on their cell phones. (AP) — A judge on Thursday disqualified the St. Louis prosecutor from the case involving Mark McCloskey, who along with his wife pointed guns at racial injustice protesters marching on the private street near their home in June. Circuit Judge Thomas Clark II dismissed Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, citing two campaign fundraising emails around the time she filed felony gun charges against the couple in July. OMAHA, Neb.  - The DEA is warning police and parents to be on the lookout for marijuana and methamphetamine laced candy this Halloween.The DEA and police agencies throughout the country have seen an increase of seizures of drug-laced edibles, including but not limited to chocolates, suckers and gummies. The DEA's Omaha Division has not identified any specific threats but issued an advisory.The items are often professionally packaged and can easily be mistaken for regular candy or baked goods. One of the men convicted of killing Michael Jordan’s dad, James Jordan, will be paroled in 2023, according to multiple reports.Larry Demery and his friend Daniel Green were arrested and tried for murder in the 1993 shooting death of James Jordan. The elder Jordan had stopped at a rest stop for the night to sleep while on his way home from a funeral. Prosecutors said Demery and Green shot him, stole his car and then got rid of his body.In 1996, Demery and Green were sentenced to life in prison. Demery was spared the death penalty at the time because attorneys claimed he did not pull the trigger and he felt remorse, according to the Raleigh News and Observer. Demery pleaded guilty and testified against Green.North Carolina’s Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission released a short statement announcing they approved Demery to take part in a vocational and scholastic program as part of parole.
