A study published this week takes a look at just how quickly Covid-19 test results are getting back, on average.Researchers surveyed more than 19,000 people across every state and the District of Columbia during the last two weeks of July. They asked how long people waited to get back test results.Most people, about 63 percent, are not getting their test results back within the one-to-two day window that is optimal for contact tracing.More than 30 percent of survey participants reported they received test results after four or more days.“Rapid turnaround of testing for COVID-19 infection is essential to containing the pandemic. Ideally, test results would be available the same day. Our findings indicate that the United States is not currently performing testing with nearly enough speed,” researchers said in the report of their findings.The average wait time nationwide was 4.1 days.However, there were disparities in wait times when looking at race. According to the study, Covid-19 test results wait times for Hispanics and Blacks are longer, at 4.6 days and 5 days respectively. Compared to wait times for white respondents, which was 3.9 days according to the study.Researchers said there is little sign the wait time for test results is speeding up. A similar survey conducted in April found that the national average wait time was 4.2 days.This study did not look into the causes of the delay in receiving test results. Other reporting has pointed to limited testing supplies, labs being overwhelmed with tests to run, and the time needed to contact everyone with results.On Monday, Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis called some Covid-19 test results “useless” because they are taking too long to come back. A Thanksgiving night shooting at a mall in Alabama left two people injured and a gunman dead, authorities said Thursday.The incident at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover started with a physical altercation between an 18-year-old and the 21-year-old gunman, police said. The confrontation occurred in the mall, near Footaction and JC Penney stores.Police do not know how the confrontation began, but "we do not believe at this point the 18-year-old was armed," Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector said.The gunman opened fire, shooting the teen twice in the torso, according to police. An officer confronted the gunman as he ran away from the scene and fatally shot him, Rector said.The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office investigates the incident, police said.A 12-year-old girl was also struck and injured, but it's unclear by whom, Rector said. The two people injured have been hospitalized.The girl had a single gunshot wound and has gone through surgery and "does not have life-threatening injuries," Rector told CNN.Witnesses described hearing gunshots inside the mall, which was open late on Thanksgiving. A Pacific Beach woman was hospitalized after tripping over a dockless scooter left next to a traffic light on Garnet Avenue.The incident happened July 1, the day the city began enforcing scooter regulations. Ellie Fellers, who is in her 80s, was trying to cross Mission Boulevard at Garnet Avenue to mail a letter. She says she pressed the button to cross on the the traffic light, which was surrounded by unused scooters. Once she got the signal, she turned to cross but tripped over a scooter.Fellers says she suffered two concussions and a bleed above her adrenal gland. "Enough of this," Fellers told the City Council Tuesday. "The money you're making on those scooters can't possibly make up for the amount that it's costing you."The new city rules call for painted corrals that designate where scooter riders can leave the devices. However, they're currently only located in downtown. On Wednesday in Pacific Beach, there were scooters left along the sidewalks or toppled over in piles. "All of this is making it very difficult for pedestrians to get around town, and we've noticed that people who normally walk for exercise, like Ms. Fellers - they're saying we don't feel comfortable walking for exercise in our own community," said Scott Chipman, a 45-year Pacific Beach resident and a member of its community planning group.A spokeswoman for the mayor says 100 dockless scooter corrals will be added in Pacific Beach, and another 80 in Ocean Beach, by the end of the month.Meanwhile, Chipman and other residents are reporting that many of the scooters are not slowing to the geo-fenced limit of 8 miles per hour along the boardwalk.Annalisa Snow, who was riding a scooter along the boardwalk Wednesday, said she hasn't noticed any change."I haven't personally," she said. A significant earthquake shook the Los Angeles area Thursday afternoon, the US Geological Survey reports.Initial readings by the USGS report that the 5.3 magnitude quake struck about 60 miles off the Santa Monica coast near Santa Cruz island.There are currently no reports of any damage or injuries.
