FRESNO, Calif. (KGTV) - More than 200 Marines and Sailors from Camp Pendleton have been helping in the Creek Fire fight for nearly two weeks."This is why Marines sign up, this is why they join the Marine Corps, is to serve," Commanding Officer of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, Lt. Col. Melina Mesta said during a trip to The Sierra National Forest last weekend. The 233 Marines and Sailors with the 7th ESB deployed September 19th after a day of firefighting training on Camp Pendleton. Lt. Col. Mesta said this task force is equipped with the right tools to pivot on a moment's notice to an unconventional mission like this."Like we say in the Marine Corps, 'Any Climb, Any Place.' We like to adapt to our environment and anything that is asked of us," Operation Chief Master Sgt. Juan Guillen said.Mesta described the mission at the Creek Fire as a lot of manual labor, "really hard dirty work with some long hours."Master Sgt. Guillen said Marines and Sailors wake up at 5:30 a.m., wash up, and go to a briefing. Then they head out around 7:30 a.m. and work the fire line until around 6:30 p.m. That's an 11 hour work day every day, with breaks to keep them safe."They're assessing any hot spots any areas that could potentially flare up." Master Sgt. Guillen said there is also a night shift that patrols with the same mission.Master Sgt. Guillen acknowledged how difficult the work is and said Marines and Sailors appreciate what firefighters do. He said one of the differences in this work is where the heavy backpack filled with supplies sits on your back as a firefighter. He said Marines are used to having a heavy pack that sits high up on the back. This versus what they use on the fire line, which is much lower, closer to the waist to allow for bending and work closer to the ground.During their deployment, containment of the fire jumped 22% to 44%, making a tangible difference that hits close to home."It's an honor to be back here and help out the community. I spent a lot of time up here camping near where the Creek Fire's at." Master Sgt. Guillen said he grew up in Fresno, his parents were migrant workers in the fields. He said he's thankful to see businesses nearby opening back up now that the fire's threat is dwindling."We're here to support as long as needed and the mindset of the Marines and Sailors that are out here is that mission accomplishment is our priority," he said. All of the Marines and Sailors at the Creek Fire volunteered for this mission. They do not have an end date to head back to Camp Pendleton. 2554

Former President Bill Clinton will highlight the second day of speeches from a virtual Democratic National Convention.Among those joining Clinton are former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer.Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, is also expected to deliver remarks.According to CNN and NBC News, former Secretary of State under Republican President George W. Bush Colin Powell will officially endorse Joe Biden on Tuesday.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the party's most vocal members and a leader in the Democratic party's progressive wing, will deliver a 60-second speech on Tuesday evening. Progressive members of the party have been critical of the DNC's decision to limit Ocasio-Cortez's speaking time, while allowing some Republicans, like former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, the opportunity to speak longer.Ocasio-Cortez responded to the criticism by posting, "I only have a minute," a poem by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. 1092

For four days starting Monday, the Democrats will hold their national convention virtually after canceling their in-person convention slated for Milwaukee due to the coronavirus. The Democrats will attempt to keep a familiar format for its convention, with several keynote speakers scheduled to speak each night. The Republicans will also hold most of their convention activities virtually, starting for four nights on August 24.What’s differentThe conventions are generally a spectacle with thousands of party supporters gathered in a large arena amid pomp and circumstance. While conventions are a way for parties to energize their leaders for the stretch run of a campaign, the gathering of delegates allow for the party to develop its platform. While conventions officially serve the purpose of nominating a candidate for vice president and president, the nominations are generally a formality at the convention. With a virtual convention, the most visual component of the convention is gone. Will the addresses just be seen as more stump speeches? The event will also be pared down some. The speeches will run from 9 to 11 p.m. ET nightly. At previous conventions, festivities generally began in the late afternoon. With a shortened timeframe, a number of lower profile Democrats – think members of Congress without a national profile – won’t make it on the convention stage. What’s the sameThe format will still be a familiar one for those who follow conventions. A number of speeches will be given by top Democrats to promote Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and the party’s platform.Tuesday will also feature the official nomination for president and vice president. Wednesday will include the traditional vice presidential nominee acceptance speech, following by Thursday’s traditional presidential nominee acceptance speech.Like at a customary convention, the virtual Democratic Convention will have themes each night. Monday’s theme will be “We the People,” Tuesday’s theme will be “Leadership Matters,” Wednesday’s theme will be “A More Perfect Union,” and Thursday’s theme will be “America’s Promise.”The speakersThe Democratic Party has released a list of speakers for each night. Here is sampling of the speakers for this year’s convention.Monday:Former Ohio Gov. John KasichSen. Bernie SandersNew York Gov. Andrew CuomoMichigan Gov. Gretchen WhitmerSen. For the first time since July, the White House’s coronavirus task force delivered a briefing on Thursday as cases reach record levels throughout the US.President Donald Trump did not participate in Thursday's news briefing. The president has not had any public events this week. The coronavirus task force encouraged Americans to remain vigilant and practice social distancing guidelines as the virus spreads throughout the US.Dr. Anthony Fauci, the federal government’s top infectious disease expert, said that the “cavalry is coming.” He said recent developments of a pair of vaccines showing an effectiveness of 95% should give Americans confidence to get a vaccine once they become available.“The process of the speed did not compromise at all the safety nor did it compromised the scientific integrity,” Fauci said. “It was a reflection of extraordinary scientific advances in these types of vaccines which allowed us to do things in months that actually took years before but I really want to settle that concern that people have about that.”While the tone from the White House coronavirus task force was against lockdowns, states across the country have reimplemented some shutdowns of and limits to businesses. Notably, much of California will go under a curfew nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m."We will be getting vaccine doses to people who are high priority at the end of December," Fauci said. "We aren't talking about shutting down the country. We are talking about locking down. We are talking about simple public health measures that we all talked about mask wearing, distancing, avoiding congregate settings, doing things to the extent that we can outdoors versus indoors and if we do that we'll be able to hold things off until the vaccine comes."Vice President Mike Pence says that the US will have 100 million doses of a vaccine ready to begin distribution as soon as an emergency use authorization is granted. General Gustave Perna, who is leading the government's distribution efforts of a vaccine said that when an emergency use authorization is given, the first doses of a vaccine will be distributed within 24 hours. Pfizer says its vaccine candidate could seek emergency use authorization from the FDA as soon as Friday.Distribution will be a challenge as the leading coronavirus vaccines have to be stored at extremely cold conditions.Perna said that the federal government is working with states on setting up places for a vaccine to be availble. The vaccines can be distributed from hospitals down to a local Walgreens or CVS. "We will distribute the vaccine accordingly," Perna said. "We want the vaccines at the places where the American people are comfortable; at our hospitals, our doctors offices, CVS, Walgreens and the health care facilities, places where people are comfortable going. That's where we started"Thursday’s briefing comes on the same day that the CDC urged Americans not to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday and asked Americans to only celebrate the holiday with those in their household.Earlier this week, task force member Dr. Scott Atlas criticized public health experts for advising Americans not to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. Atlas’ stance is an outlier among experts. On Wednesday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic passed 250,000 in the United States. On Wednesday alone, more than 1,800 deaths were reported throughout the US, marking the most in a single day since the spring. 3488
