Attorney General William Barr has authorized federal prosecutors across the U.S. to pursue “substantial allegations” of voting irregularities before the 2020 presidential election is certified, despite little evidence of fraud. Barr’s action Monday comes days after Democrat Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump and raises the prospect that Trump will use the Justice Department to try to challenge the outcome. It gives prosecutors the ability to go around longstanding Justice Department policy that normally would prohibit such overt actions before the election is formally certified. President Trump has not conceded the election and is instead claiming without evidence that there has been a widespread, multi-state conspiracy by Democrats to skew the vote tally in President-elect Biden’s favor.Several Republicans in charge of elections have faced scorn from their own party. Republican Philadelphia election head Al Schmidt told CBS News he has been receiving death threats after Pennsylvania was called for Biden on Saturday. Meanwhile, two Republican Senators in Georgia, both headed to their own run-off elections in January, released a statement Monday calling for the resignation of the state’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who is also a Republican. 1286

As the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected a resurgence of coronavirus-related deaths at the start of the fall, Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin said a second shutdown of the US economy is not on the table. In an interview with CNBC on Thursday, Mnuchin said, “We can’t shut down the economy again. I think we’ve learned that if you shut down the economy, you’re going to create more damage.”In the last three months, more than 113,000 Americans have died from the virus despite massive mitigation efforts. Efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus caused millions of US workers to file for unemployment. The coronavirus has remained deadly as state economies have return to operation. Johns Hopkins University says that the coronavirus has killed an average of 1,000 Americans per day over the last month, which is down from a peak of 2,000 to 2,500 per day during the month of April. It also appears that Mnuchin’s words did little to quell economic anxieties on Wall Street on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling 1,800 points. The market had seen a steady rebound after a sudden drop in the market in March.Even with a functioning economy, Wall Street’s response to growing concerns of a coronavirus resurgence shows that further economic growth could be slowed. The US economy officially entered a recession in February as CDC leaders predicted that the US would experience community spread of the virus. There is no sign the US is poised to exit out of a recession.“There are other areas and we’ve talked about (a shutdown): medical problems and everything else that get put on hold,” Mnuchin said. “I think it was very prudent what the president did, but I think we’ve learned a lot.”Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell told reporters on Wednesday that getting the economy back to where it was before the coronavirus began to spread could take time.“My assumption is there will be a significant chunk, well into the millions -- I don't want to give you a number because it's going to be a guess -- but well, well into the millions of people who don't get to go back to their old job and in fact there may not be a job in the industry for them for some time, there will eventually be but it could be some years before we get back to those people finding jobs,” Powell said. "When people lose a job, they can find a job in their own industry, that's the fastest way and no other people in the industry, different kinds of jobs, that's usually the fastest.“If you have to go and start over again it's much harder and that's where you lose people who fall out of the labor force and is very tough on their lives, we all know people.”Unemployment reached its highest level since the Great Depression in April. Even with the possibility of sustained high unemployment numbers, the Cares Act is set to end a 0 bonus to unemployment checks at the end of next month.Whether supplemental funds for unemployment checks will continue beyond next month is still up in the air as Congress considers a next round of stimulus funds. 3104

As the NFL continues to operate surrounded by an inferno of coronavirus cases throughout the US, the league told players to wear face coverings when not actively in the game, ESPN reported on Monday. The new requirements go into effect starting with Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day slate of games.According to ESPN’s report, the NFL is requiring masks to be worn unless a player has their helmet on and is in and or about to enter the game. The league is also telling coaches that face shields alone are no longer adequate, and face coverings or double-layer gaiters must be worn during games. The NFL is limiting the number of players on the travel roster to 62. The league is reducing the number of members of the media who can cover team practices. The NFL releases weekly figures of COVID-19 cases. The league tested a total of 7,856 tests to players and staff. Last week, there were 17 new COVID-19 cases reported among players, and 35 among coaches and staff. Since training camp in August, 95 players and 175 staffers have tested positive for the virus. To read ESPN’s report on the NFL’s enhanced COVID-19 protocols, click here. 1135

As part of his push to get schools reopened in the fall, he is calling on Congress to approve 5 billion in funding to help with additional costs associated with the coronavirus pandemic.“This funding will support mitigation measures such as smaller class sizes, more teachers and teacher aides, repurposes spaces to practice social distancing, and crucially mask wearing,” Trump said.Trump is also taking a different tact to compelling schools to reopen. Previously, Trump threatened to pull federal funds from schools that did not reopen. Many of those funds are through the Title 1 program, which are directed toward poorer and disadvantaged schools.Rather than pulling federal funds from schools that opt for virtual learning, Trump said that the supplemental funds would go with the students. Under his proposal, students could use federal funds for other in-person learning options, or for homeschooling.“If schools do not reopen, the funding should go to parents to send their child to public/private, charter, religious or home school of their choice, the keyword being choice,” Trump said. “If the school is closed, the money should follow the student so the parents and families are in control of their own decisions. So, we would like the money to go to the parents of the student. This way they can make the decision that's best for them.”Trump said that the CDC would issue new guidance Thursday evening on how to safely reopen schools. While Senate Republicans seem poised to pass additional education funds as part of a broader stimulus plan, Democrats are not as enthusiastic.Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters on Thursday that the bill “so far falls very short of the challenge that we face in order to defeat the virus and to open our schools and to open our economy.”The bill also includes funding for coronavirus tests and a second round of stimulus checks. 1887

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers executed the second largest methamphetamine bust recently along the southwest borders in CBP's history, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.A press release states that a driver of a tractor-trailer with a "shipment that was manifested as medical supplies," pulled up to the Otay Mesa cargo border in San Diego Friday morning. An agent there at the time decided to pull the truck over for a more thorough inspection. Imagining systems, similar to an x-ray, were used to investigate the trailer and revealed suspicious components in the back of the trailer.Officers offloaded more than 1,800 packages mixed with medical supplies. That's when they discovered more than 3,100 pounds of methamphetamine, 64 pounds of heroin, 29 pounds of fentanyl powder, and almost 37 pounds of fentanyl pills. The narcotics are estimated to have a street value of .2 million, according to the press release.“This massive seizure is a testament of what law enforcement agencies can do when we combine forces – prevent over million worth of deadly drugs from entering our country; thus saving countless lives from addiction and overdose deaths,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. Callery. 1271
