This means BMIs both lower and higher than the optimal range lead to increased risk of morbidity.The study, which analyzed data from 3.6 million people and 367,512 deaths, showed that obesity, or BMI of 30 or more, was linked to an increased prevalence of two major causes of death: heart disease and cancer."BMI higher than 25, the upper end of healthy, is linked to most cancers, most cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disease, and liver and kidney conditions," Bhaskaran said.Obesity was shown to reduce life expectancy by 4.2 years in men and 3.5 years in women, and it can contribute to other chronic conditions including respiratory disease, liver disease and diabetes.The British Journal of Cancer reported in April that obesity is linked to 7.5% of cancers in UK women.The charity Cancer Research UK estimated that 23,000 women will deal with obesity-related cancers by 2035. Obesity will also become the most common cause of cancer in women by 2043 if trends continue.The study also revealed that being underweight is linked to a "surprising wide range of deaths," including dementia, Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease and suicide.However, Bhaskaran noted that links between low BMI and causes of death were more "observative," as it was less clear whether low weight was the direct cause of illness or rather a marker of poor health more generally.He also acknowledged the limitations of the study, which included a lack of information on the diet or level of physical activity of the individuals involved and the impact these factors may have had on morbidity.He nevertheless noted that the findings reiterated the importance of maintaining a BMI within the 21 to 25 range. 3130

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Monday morning neighbors posted about a rash of graffiti in Escondido, a block away from Glen View Elementary school, outraged at the content and vandalism.On East Mission Avenue, just past Midway Drive, a home and two power boxes stained with black spray paint. One of the designs looked like a Star of David, causing concern online, worried the vandalism was anti-semitic."I noticed the graffiti over there, and that's just a disgrace," Grandmother Rose Ochoa said as she paused on her daily walk with two grandchildren on their way to pick up another grandchild."I feel disrespected. I feel like there's a lot of hate," Christina Landers said. She's lived in this neighborhood for about 27 years and said the graffiti has spread closer to her home, "it's crazy, it's like they're messing up our side of town.""I mean it's everywhere, you can't walk down a block without seeing it," Ochoa said. Federal authorities are investigating after officials in Massachusetts confirm that a ballot drop box in Boston was set on fire early Sunday morning.According to WCVB-TV in Boston, a ballot drop box out front of the Boston Public Library's main branch in Copley Square was set ablaze around 4 a.m. ET on Sunday morning. Crews eventually extinguished the fire with water.According to WCVB, an "incendiary device" was used to start the fire. (KGTV) — A fundraising t-shirt made for an Escondido Police officer fighting brain cancer was banned from Palomar Hospital after someone deemed it racist.Escondido Police Officer Brett Byler, 31, seemed to have it all: a beautiful family and his dream job. But in February, his life turned upside down."He went for a bike ride, and he collapsed," Officer Byler's father, Jim Byler said. "He went to the emergency room, and four days later, he was having brain surgery."The young father of three was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Byler said the news was devastating, but the community immediately showed their support. Within days, a friend and employee at Palomar Hospital, where Officer Byler was doing rehab, asked if they could make a fundraiser t-shirt for Byler."I thought it was awesome. It was just an act of kindness and generosity, and it kind of overwhelmed us," Byler said, tearing up.The friend designed an original logo with the family's silhouette in front of an American flag with red white and blue stripes, each color representing fire, medical personnel, and police.Byler said it was a big hit. Along with the Gofundme, it raised a lot of money, and hospital staff wore the T-shirt for months."Everything was good, and then we found out that the shirt was being characterized as something that it was clearly never intended to be," Byler said.According to Palomar Hospital, a patient and staff member recently reported that the shirt was racist and that they were offended by it. The blue line in a similarly designed shirt has caused national controversy in recent months, where some have interpreted it as "Anti-Black Lives Matter."
