SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the federal government failed to pass a new spending measure to fund several agencies through the new year, a partial government shutdown went into effect late Friday.TSA agents in San Diego, categorized as essential employees, will return to work Saturday but without pay under the partial shutdown. Many other employees will also be required to work without pay, including: The Department of Homeland SecurityThe Justice DepartmentThe Interior DepartmentThe State DepartmentThe Department of Housing and Urban Development"Mortgages, car payments, things of that nature, Border Patrol agents will have to find a way to make ends meet, even while they're not receiving their paychecks," Joshua Wilson, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, told 10News. Though, Wilson added a shutdown was worth ensuing more border security for him and other agents. "It's about darn time Congress do something about border security. They keep punting, and we're very, very tired of it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As apprehensions rise to new levels, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the U.S.-Mexico border has reached a breaking point.At the San Diego sector alone, the apprehension of unaccompanied minors rose by 80 percent from fiscal year 2018 to fiscal year 2019. Most of the minors made their way to the U.S. from Guatemala and Honduras. The number of families detained in San Diego saw the largest increase. RELATED: Nearly 300 families may have been separated before 'zero tolerance' took effect, admin saysDuring fiscal year 2018, 1,032 families were apprehended at San Diego’s border. That figure rose sharply to 8,217 so far in fiscal year 2019, an increase of nearly 700 percent. Most families also came from Guatemala and Honduras. The agency says it’s also facing more large groups. So far this fiscal year, CBP reports 70 large groups of 100 or more compared to just 13 large groups in 2018. Border Patrol Chief Brian Hastings said during Tuesday's news conference that they've seen about 2,400 fraudulent family claims from April last year to February, with some migrants falsely claiming they are under 18-years-old or saying they are family members when in reality, they are not. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California will close state beach parking lots in San Diego County ahead of July Fourth.In a news release Friday, the state listed San Diego among six other counties where parking will also be closed at state beaches.Other state park units will remain open, according to the state, but State Park staff will monitor visitation to ensure compliance with public health orders."Everyone has the responsibility to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, including in the outdoors," the state said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities in California have identified the sailor who died after being struck by a spinning helicopter blade as 32-year-old Lt. James Mazzuchelli.Mazzuchelli was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39 and was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.Mazzuchelli is from Orange Park, Florida and was previously deployed to Japan.“Lt. James Mazzuchelli was an incredibly talented physician and Sailor,” said Col. Matthew Mowery, commanding officer of MAG-39. “His contagious enthusiasm, motivation, and love for the Marines and Sailors of HMLA-267 and MAG-39 has been evident in the outpouring of grief at his loss and the support being shown to his family and close friends. His willingness to join the Navy and elect to serve faithfully with the Marines should give a sense of pride to all of us who serve our country that we are surrounded by heroes every day.
