There is no price on peace of mind when it comes to protecting your home. But there are a few things you can do to make your property safer for less than .One of the best ways is to put a deadbolt on a side door. Locksmith Jim Lang says that's one fo the first parts of a home burglars try to break into."They don't want to go through the front door and have everyone in the neighborhood see them," he said. Lang said thieves can use a credit card to pry open a door with a basic lock, but a deadbolt costs . He also spends an extra for three-inch nails to make the door stronger, so burglars can't kick it down. Lang also suggested pins to lock sliding glass doors, and a window lock to keep burglars from opening vented windows.La Mesa Police Sgt. Katy Lynch said it's also important to keep the area your front door visible. A peep-hole to see out the door should cost about . The La Mesa police has a free crime prevention program, in which officers will walkthrough homes?giving advice on how to better protect them. Thousands of elevator permits in San Diego County are out of date, according to the Department of Industrial Relations. In San Diego and Imperial Counties, a DIR spokesperson said there are 12,541 elevator permits issued. Of those, 6,932 are expired. DIR spokesperson Frank Polizzi said there is no penalty for expired permits, “but a unit should not be running if it has been tagged out of service for a maintenance/safety reason.”Team 10 visited several elevators in downtown San Diego and found there was no permit displayed in the elevator at all—including an elevator at Horton Plaza and one operated by the City of San Diego. Polizzi said there are other reasons a displayed permit could be expired, besides the elevator being out of compliance. The owner could be waiting for a Cal/OSHA permit inspection or they have not posted the most updated permit. 868
There was a simple explanation in October 2017 when a Department of Homeland Security official was asked why a memo justifying ending immigrant protections for Central Americans made conditions in those countries sound so bad."The basic problem is that it IS bad there," the official wrote.Nevertheless, he agreed to go back and see what he could do to better bolster the administration's decision to end the protections regardless. The revelation comes in a collection of internal emails and documents made public Friday as part of an ongoing lawsuit over the decision to end temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who live in the US, most of whom have been here for well over a decade.Friday's document dump come as backup for the attorneys' request that the judge immediately block the government's decision to end these protections as the case is fully heard. A hearing is scheduled for late September. In the emails, Trump administration political officials repeatedly pushed for the termination of TPS for vulnerable countries, even as they faced pushback from internal assessments by career staffers and other parts of the administration. In one exchange, the now-director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Francis Cissna, remarks that a document recommending that TPS for Sudan be terminated reads like it was going to recommend the opposite until someone was "clubbed ... over the head." 1439
