JACUMBA HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force notified residents of Jacumba Hot Springs and Boulevard Thursday about the placement of a sexually violent predator. Law enforcement officers went door to door in the East San Diego County communities to make neighbors aware that Alan Earl James will be placed into the area on or before April 25. James is scheduled to move to 45612 Old Highway 80 after he is released from Department of State Hospitals Coalinga, sheriff’s officials said in a news release. The victims were primarily girls, but boys were also preyed upon, officials said. Some of James’ victims argued against his release. “He will re-offend if he gets out. He did it once before. (KGTV) - After serving the beach communities of Pacific Beach and La Jolla for more than 60 years, Pernicano’s Family Restaurant will be closing.Johnny Pernicano Sr., the restaurant's enigmatic founder, still comes every night, singing to patrons with his piano and accordion.“I learned how to play all the instruments just by being here every night,” said Pernicano.He and his nine brothers began opening restaurants across San Diego after World War II. As the youngest son, he started off making pizzas in his older brother’s restaurant. But by the mid ’50s, he went off on his own to build the restaurant that’s now on Turquoise Street on the southern edge of La Jolla.Since then, it’s served as the reliable home for birthdays, reunions, fundraisers and family dinners across San Diego.It’s one of three surviving Pericano’s in the county. Two of his nephews, now in their 70's, operate locations in El Cajon and Poway. KOKOMO, Ind. -- Malachi's Magnificent Lemonade opened Friday and Saturday to raise money for the family of Jacob Pickett, and Indiana sheriff's deputy who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month.Pickett was laid to rest on Friday. He was fatally wounded while assisting with a pursuit and foot chase on March 2.All of the lemonade stand's proceeds will go to Pickett's family. Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets in the Solar System, were stationed in nearly the same spot in the night sky on Monday, creating a bright spectacle.The positions of the two planets align once every 20 years, according to NASA. While conjunctions happen several times during the course of a typical lifetime, a conjunction of this magnitude is quite rare. The last time the two planets were this close to each other in the night sky was 400 years ago, but no one was able to see it as that conjunction occurred during the day.The last time a conjunction of his magnitude happened at night was 800 years ago.So what causes the conjunction?“You can imagine the solar system to be a racetrack, with each of the planets as a runner in their own lane and the Earth toward the center of the stadium,” said Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “From our vantage point, we’ll be able to be to see Jupiter on the inside lane, approaching Saturn all month and finally overtaking it on December 21.”The timing of the conjunction adds to the spectacle. Monday also marks the winter solstice.Being four days before Christmas, some are dubbing the event as “The Christmas Star,” although the conjunction is of planets and not stars. Scientists have long speculated whether the Star of Bethlehem was the 7 BC conjunction of the two planets.“Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits,” said Throop. “The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system.”While the two planets will have the appearance of being very close to each other, in reality, they will be hundreds of millions of miles apart.For the next few days, Saturn and Jupiter will remain very close to each other in the night sky.
