SYDNEY, May 27 (Xinhua) -- A toddler and a policeman have become the latest victims of a rare and potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease in Western Australia (WA), local media reported on Friday.The two-year-old child contracted Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) in the Kimberley of WA and is now in Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition, according to Australian Associated Press (AAP).The 29-year-old police officer, who was recently contracted the disease at an Aboriginal community of WA, has emerged from a coma in a Perth hospital but is still unable to communicate.It is not known if the victims from WA's far north will fully recover.In April 2011, a man who had been traveling in WA's northwest became the first person in the state to die from the disease in three years.A 19-year-old Canadian tourist also died after contracting MVE while traveling through the Northern Territory earlier in May.A WA Health Department spokeswoman said nine West Australians had contracted MVE so far in 2011. Several people remain very ill in hospital, she said.

IWATE, Japan, March 14 (Xinhua) -- A 15-strong Chinese international search and rescue team Monday morning set out to join the relief work in Oofunato, Iwate, a city severely damaged by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake Friday.The Chinese international search and rescue team, which arrived in Oofunato at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, is the first overseas team to join and help out the relief work in the city.Team leader Yin Guangfui said they have brought along life exploration device and some other equipment to help carrying out the rescue.The team, with good experience in search and rescue, will strive to do the relief work, Yin added.The team members, including rescue and medical personnel, gathered at a primary school in Oofunato on Sunday and set off at 7:30 a.m. to the disaster-hit area together with the Japanese rescue teams after a briefing. The team is expected to be here for seven to 10 days.The catastrophic earthquake hit northeast of Japan on March 11, triggering severe tsunami and causing extensive damage and loss in different areas. LOS ANGELES, April 7 (Xinhua) -- A new research has found that about nine million people in the United States identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).About 1.8 percent of adults identify themselves as bisexual, 1. 7 percent as gay or lesbian, and 0.03 percent as transgender, researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles' School of Law said in the study published by The Los Angeles Times on Thursday.The study culled data and methods from nine surveys conducted over the last seven years and averaged results from five of those surveys to estimate sexual orientation and from two surveys to estimate the transgender population.The findings also show that about 8.2 percent of Americans said they participated in same-sex sexual activity and about 11 percent said they had some same-sex sexual attraction, but neither of these groups necessarily identified themselves as LGBT.The researchers noted that insufficient and inconsistent national surveys make it difficult to get an estimate of the LGBT population in the United States, according to the Times report.

WASHINGTON, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Taking a statin before having major elective surgery reduces potentially serious kidney complications, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology.Each year, more than 230 million major elective surgeries are performed around the world. Unfortunately, many patients who undergo major operations develop kidney injury soon after surgery, often due to decreased blood flow to the kidneys and/or the effects of inflammation.Animal studies suggest that the cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins protect the kidneys from such damage, but whether a similar benefit occurs in humans is uncertain. To investigate, Amber Molnar, University of Western Ontario, and colleagues conducted a population-based retrospective study of all older patients who underwent major elective surgery in the province of Ontario, Canada from 1995 to 2008. Surgeries included cardiac, thoracic, vascular, intra-abdominal, and retroperitoneal procedures.A total of 213,347 patients from 211 hospitals underwent major elective surgery, and 4,020 patients (1.9 percent) developed postoperative kidney injury within two weeks of surgery. A total of 1,173 patients (0.5 percent) required dialysis within two weeks of surgery, and 5,974 patients (2.8 percent) died within a month of surgery.Prior to surgery, 67,941 patients (32 percent) were taking a statin. Patients taking a statin were 20 percent less likely to develop kidney injury, need dialysis, and die compared to patients who were not taking a statin. Also, there was evidence of a dose-effect, with patients on higher potency statins having less kidney injury. In addition, statins were beneficial whether they were started greater than 90 days or less than 30 days prior to surgery."Our study suggests that statin use in older persons results in less kidney injury following major elective surgery and reduces the risk of premature death after surgery," said Molnar, adding that the results warrant further investigation with more rigorous studies, but such trials will be difficult to carry out.
