But many say they are perks of the Convention going virtual. Instead of going to Comic-Con, this year, Comic-Con comes to you.First thing's first. Print out your badge, just to make it feel official. This year, the Convention even created a new pet attendee option!Next, log onto the free online panels. Thursday's line-up included video presentations by anime superhouse, Crunchyroll, zoom-style discussions with artists and producers, as well as a read-through and Q&A sessions with the star-studded cast of the Star Trek Universe. "I think the best way to bring it to the next level is to add superpowers if you're a superhero."Productioncrate LLC is a visual effects company out of Kearny Mesa. Through their free or premium subscription service, users can instantly make their videos "more awesome," as Kelly said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Merritte Powell hired six new people once his downtown restaurant got the green light to serve indoors again.But now, those workers could be in for some bad news. The three or four shifts they thought they’d get each week at La Puerta could instead be reduced to one, if that.“The hardest part is just the emotions and the mental health of the people working in the industry,” Powell said.It’s because San Diego County is in danger of falling into the state’s most restrictive purple tier of coronavirus restrictions, which would ban restaurants from serving indoors. That would be the latest setback in the region's push to return to normal amid the outbreak.“It feels like they're just playing games with us at this point, and it's getting frustrating,” Powell said.The twists and turns are taking a big toll, not just on day-to-day operations, but also when it comes to hiring in the future.“You're not going to hire people back, you're being extremely cautious,” said Ray Major, SANDAG’s chief economist.Major said restaurant owners have it especially hard. Not only do they have to be concerned with whether they can break even, but also if a future move into a less restrictive tier would only be temporary."We're really going to have to get into the orange or the yellow tier, and we're going to have to be able to stay there, and businesses are going to have to have the confidence that we're not going to shut them down again before they start rehiring people," Major said.SANDAG says the region's jobless rate was 13.3%, with 226,000 unemployed workers as of Sept. 5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many kids are starting the school year with a device at home as schools across the state go back in session.Meanwhile, some of their teachers are back in the classroom alone, running classes virtually to help keep some of the normalcy intact."I come to school for the kids," said Tanya Morrison, a geography teacher at West Hills High School in Grossmont Union High School District.Last school year, she taught six classes and saw around 190 teenagers every day."Now, I am waiting for my students to log in," Morrison said.Instead of walking up and down rows of desks, she teaches her twice a week virtual lessons through the computer. Her computer sits at eye-level thanks to a stack of textbooks.Morrison's got two screens, so she can see the teens and the lesson."They should already be working," she said. "They get their assignment at 8 in the morning on our Schoology platform, and they just log-in, and it's kind of self-directed work, and then we move into twice a week Zoom meetings," she said.Preparation for the lesson began days earlier.Instead of a free form approach, Morrison makes a slide presentation to keep the students engaged."I’ll use an app today called Pear Deck, and what it does is it makes Google Slide presentations interactive," she said. "So each slide they have a chance on their end to write a response and it kind of forces engagement and gives them something to do while I'm talking."But even with all the planning, there's still challenges."In the classrooms, I can see that kids are disengaged," she said. "With this, I'm trying to figure out are you really disengaged or do you have a lot of kids in your house, and it's just easy to get distracted."Morrison's been teaching for 16 years.Instead of teaching from home she chose an empty classroom and campus to make sure she's focused on the students as this year's needs are so different. Not everything happens in a Zoom session."Just those normal conversations that might happen in five seconds in the room is like 45 minutes of buildup and email conversations, can I call you now, are you going to answer and those little things," she said.With more than half of the counties in California on the state’s monitoring list, most learning, for now, is at a distance.Morrison doesn't make the rules on how or when kids will be back, but she tries to control what she can."It gives me that passion to keep going and just to see that I do this for the kids," she said. 2481

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like most people who’ve worked decades towards retirement, Danielle Schulte has some ideas on how she’ll spend it."Initially I’m going to sleep in late, read the newspaper, yes, I still read paper!”Schulte is an Employee Relation Specialist for UC San Diego and hopes to retire in about six years.While she's been saving since graduating college, Schulte wishes she'd saved more, especially watching the market plunge in recent days.“Because I am getting close to retirement, I don’t have as much comfort in giving it time to even out,” said Schulte.She hired a financial advisor 13 years ago and continues to fine-tune her plan, currently looking into annuities."He has been really good in helping me not to panic, helping me invest my money in stable securities as best you can, given the market," said Schulte.Dennis Brewster is a financial advisor for SagePoint Financial. He too says it's not the time to panic.“Right now we’re down about 10 percent, that’s normal, it’s just that we haven’t had anything for so long, I think that's what makes it a little tougher, we haven’t had any declines," said Brewster. "We’ve been spoiled a little bit the last few years, on average [the decline] is usually 14 percent a year.”However, Brewster says those looking to retire soon need to pay attention and plan ahead with their 401(k)."The last thing you want to do is get too aggressive going into retirement, so somebody getting closer to retirement should be concerned, they don't want to get too extreme but do want to be a little more careful because you don't have 30 years to make it up."Schulte remains confident in the groundwork she’s laid on her retirement plan and is hopeful she can turn off the alarm clock for good in six years.  1772
