CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A carjacking and pursuit led to a deadly officer-involved shooting in Chula Vista Monday evening.According to Chula Vista police, the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on the 900 block of Rutgers Avenue.Police say the incident began when officers spotted a suspect wanted for attempted murder and observed him as he carjacked a blue pickup truck at gunpoint near Main Street and Maxwell Road.The suspect, later identified as 33-year-old David Angulo, was a documented gang member wanted in connection with three shootings in the area and was considered a danger to the community by police.According to police, officers tried to conduct a traffic stop, but instead the suspect led officers on a chase into eastern Chula Vista. On Rutgers Avenue at Otay Lakes Road, the pickup truck crashed into a vehicle with a person inside. That individual was taken to the hospital with injuries believed to be serious.Following the crash, police say the suspect got out of the wreckage and tried to enter a house with a family inside. At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and officers. "It appears Mr. Angulo turned back to the officers. It's my understanding he pointed a weapon at the officers," Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Peak said. "It does appear some shots were fired at the officers and the officers returned fire."Peak added they're still investigating who fired the first shot.Chula Vista police say three officers fired their weapons, fatally injuring the suspect. Peak says medical aid was given to the suspect, but he died at the scene.The officers involved in the shooting haven't been identified at this time. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista woman's holiday decorations vanished from her lawn Thursday morning — but she's determined not to let "the Grinch" steal her Christmas spirit.It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Wendy Claproth's home in East Chula Vista. Since her husband's passing ten years ago, Claproth says she did not have the spirit to spread Christmas cheer outside. But this year, she finally got the courage to give it a shot.On her front lawn, she put up a large blowup Christmas tree snowman, hung lights along the roof, set up candy canes, wrapped her mailbox, and even created a Christmas tree with a set of lights. Her house screamed "festive." But on Thursday morning, she noticed that her brand new Christmas tree snowman inflatable was gone."Yes, you get mad, but more than anything, you get disappointed," Claproth said.It wasn't the wind, and it definitely was not an accident. Thieves had ripped the blowup right from her lawn, leaving only the stakes."It was kind of angled towards the corner all by itself over there, so I guess it was an easy prey," Claproth sighed.She wrote about the incident in her neighborhood app and found that she was not the only victim. Many others chimed in, saying the Grinch stole their Christmas decorations as well.Chula Vista Police says while there are not too many official reports of stolen decorations, these thefts, unfortunately, are common during the holiday season. The global pandemic won’t stop them from tracking Santa Claus’ progress as he delivers gifts around the globe on Christmas Eve.The North American Aerospace Defense Command has announced that NORAD will track Santa on Dec. 24, just as it has done for 65 years. But there will be some changes: Not every child will be able to get through to a volunteer at NORAD’s call center to check on Santa’s whereabouts, as they have in years before.Normally, 150-160 volunteers crowd into a conference room at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, taking two-hour shifts to answer the phones as eager children call to see if Santa and his sleigh have reached their rooftops. All together, 1,500 people over 20 hours have participated in the call center in the past, fielding more than 130,000 phone calls, beginning at 6 a.m. Eastern time on Christmas Eve.This year, due to safety restrictions forced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of volunteers has been drastically cut to what NORAD expects will be fewer than 10 people per shift.“We understand this is a time-honored tradition, and we know undoubtedly there is going to be some disappointment,” said NORAD spokesman Preston Schlachter. “But we’re trying to keep it safe for everyone involved.”So, some callers may be able to once again get through to a member of the military or other volunteer when they dial the NORAD Tracks Santa toll-free number, 1-877-Hi-NORAD. But others will get a recorded update on Santa’s current location.Schlachter said NORAD will largely be limiting volunteers to people who already work there and their immediate families. But that could be expanded a bit as the time gets closer. (KGTV) -- Chula Vista’s next city manager will be the first Hispanic and first woman to serve in that role.Maria Kachadoorian, who has worked for the City of Chula Vista for 22 years, will move from her position as Assistant City Manager and take over for the retiring Gary Halbert.Halbert has served as the City Manager since 2014, and he has been with the city since 2008. He is set to retire on June 19.As the City Manager, Kachadoorian will be in charge of overseeing and maintaining the city’s budget. She will also “advance the Chula Vista Bayfront development, launch Ambulance Transport Services, and foster initiatives that better connect the City’s diverse communities.”In a statement, Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said of Kachadoorian: “Maria has the knowledge, skills and vision we need to move the City forward during these unprecedented times. CHINO HILLS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Fire officials say a brush fire that destroyed a two-story mansion in Chino Hills Monday may have been sparked by a bird, according to KABC. According to Chino Valley Fire, the blaze was caused by a large bird striking high-voltage power lines. The department says the bird then caught fire and fell to the ground, igniting the grass. The tweet went on to say that fire officials and SoCal Edison representatives inspected the power pole and found that there was no transformer installed on the pole as initially reported. No evacuations were ordered and no injuries reported. The blaze started near Chino Hills Parkway and Falling Star Lane just before 2 p.m., KABC reports. 715
