LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A San Diego man is facing a felony charge for allegedly trying to kidnap a 6-year-old girl from her blind father after encountering them on a Metro train as they were making their way home to the Westlake area of Los Angeles, police reported Wednesday.Elijah John Lopez, 24, is charged with one count of attempted kidnapping in connection with the alleged abduction Aug. 18 near Sixth and Coronado streets.He was arrested Sept. 2 in San Diego County and subsequently returned to Los Angeles. At that point, several people on the train stepped in to assist the father and daughter, police said."This overt action caused the commuting public that was on the train to step forward and tell Mr. Lopez to leave the family alone," LAPD Capt. Alfonso Lopez told reporters at a news conference at the LAPD's Rampart Station. "One would think that would stop his action, but it did not."When the father and child got off the train at the 7th Street Metro station downtown, Lopez followed, and bystanders again intervened, Lopez said."His overbearingness while walking to the bus line was so obvious and disturbing to additional Angelenos, that they in turn stepped forward and told Lopez to leave the family alone," he said.No one contacted police, however, and Lopez followed the victims as they boarded a bus and continued to speak to them, prompting yet another group of fellow commuters to come to their aid, the captain said.When they got off the bus and began walking home, Lopez followed, he said. At the intersection of Sixth and Coronado streets, Lopez allegedly tried to grab the girl's hand and pull her away, but the father held on to his daughter and screamed for help.A woman and a homeless man intervened, and Lopez fled before police could arrive."When he tried to grab her, that's when I turned around and started yelling at him, stay the bad-word away from us, that's when the neighbors stepped in and he started walking away," Palma said at the news conference at the Rampart Station, his daughter at his side."In my mind, I wanted to turn around and fight with him," Palma said. "But I thought, if I let my daughter go ... and he snatches her and he can run with her, how am I going to run after them? It's unsafe out there -- there's a lot of crazy people. Just hold on to your kids, don't let them wander off, because anything could happen."Investigators used surveillance video from public transportation to identify Lopez as the suspect. Authorities said they believe Lopez rode public transportation to target victims in both Los Angeles and San Diego counties.Investigators believe Lopez may have targeted other young children on public transportation in both Los Angeles and San Diego counties."We believe that Elijah Lopez utilizes public transportation to not only traverse between the counties of Southern California, but to target victims," Lopez said. 3415

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Actor Danny Masterson has been charged with forcibly raping three women in separate incidents between 2001 and 2003.Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced Wednesday that Masterson is being charged with three counts of rape by force or fear.The “That '70s Show” actor, now 44, is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman between January and December 2001, according to the district attorney’s office.In April 2003, Masterson allegedly raped a 28-year-old woman.And sometime between October and December of 2003, he is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman who he had invited to his Hollywood Hills home.Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller of the Sex Crimes Division, who is prosecuting the case, said all of the alleged crimes occurred at the defendant’s home.Masterson’s arraignment is scheduled for September 18.If convicted as charged, Masterson faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison.The district attorney’s office says it declined to file sexual assault charges against Masterson in two other cases, one for insufficient evidence and the other based upon the statute of limitations for the crime alleged.The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division. 1295

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board.There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan.There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash.One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds.The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog. LOS ANGELES (AP) — An autopsy report says “Glee” actor Naya Rivera raised her arm and called for help as she accidentally drowned while boating with her 4-year-old son on a California lake. The report released Friday by the Ventura County Medical Examiner says the 33-year-old Rivera was a strong swimmer. It says she had suffered from vertigo and had a recent sinus infection but neither were factors in her death. Small amounts of prescription drugs found her systems also did not contribute to her death. Rivera's son was found alone on the boat on July 8. Her body was found five days later. 603
