SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of fatally stabbing a 65-year-old clerk inside an adult bookstore in the Midway District pleaded not guilty Friday to felony murder charges that could lead to the death penalty if he's convicted.Shaun Ward, 39, was non-responsive and kept his head down during his arraignment. He was ordered held without bail in the death of 65-year-old Diane Spagnuolo.Ward refused to answer questions from Judge Maureen Hallahan about his true name or date of birth.The judge read Ward his constitutional rights and his attorney entered the not guilty plea for him.Ward was charged with murder and special circumstance allegations that the murder was committed during a robbery and that the murder involved the infliction of torture.District Attorney Summer Stephan will decide later if Ward will face life in prison without the possibility of parole or capital punishment if he's found guilty.The victim was found dead inside the X Spot Adult Store on Midway Drive on Monday afternoon, according to San Diego police. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials in San Diego County reported 269 new COVID-19 infections Sunday, bringing the total to 54,583 since mid-February, and two new deaths, bringing the overall fatality total to 870.The two deaths were men reported to have died earlier this month. They ranged in age from late 60s to early 70s, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Of the 10,819 new tests reported, 2% returned positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 2.7%. The 7-day daily average of tests is 11,127.Two new community outbreaks were confirmed, one in a health-care setting and the other in a restaurant. In the past seven days -- Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 -- 26 community outbreaks were confirmed.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Of all cases, 3,850 -- or 7.1% -- have required hospitalization. And 889 -- or 1.6% -- of all cases and 23.1% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Meanwhile, all students at San Diego State University remained under a stay-at-home advisory announced Thursday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An infectious disease expert for Scripps Health reminded San Diegans Tuesday to get influenza shots early this season to avoid potentially overloading the region's medical system during the COVID-19 pandemic."If you normally get the flu shot each year, then now is the time to make arrangements for your vaccination, and if you rarely or never get a shot, then this is the year to start doing it," said Dr. Siu Ming Geary, an internal medicine physician and vice president of primary care for Scripps Clinic Medical Group.Symptoms for typical seasonal influenza, such as fever, coughing, headache and fatigue, are similar to those for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, and both viruses attack the respiratory system. It remains unclear how the two viruses might interact or affect overall sickness when infecting the same person."We don't yet know how bad this year's flu season will be, but it is possible to get both the coronavirus and the flu at the same time," Geary said. "Both can result in severe illness and complications, including hospitalization and death. While there is not a readily available vaccine for coronavirus, we do know that being vaccinated for influenza is the best thing you can do to protect yourself from getting the flu."Last year, 105 people died from the flu in San Diego County, while the virus killed as many as 62,000 nationwide. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A wrongful death lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of the family of a 24-year-old woman who died last fall at the Las Colinas Detention Facility in Santee.Elisa Serna died Nov. 11, 2019, a few days after she was booked into the county jail.Earlier this year, the sheriff's department said Serna died from complications of drug abuse, with a contributing factor of early intrauterine pregnancy.The lawsuit filed in San Diego federal court alleges jail staff were aware of Serna's substance abuse and subsequent withdrawal symptoms, but did not provide her with treatment. Though Serna was fainting, had low blood pressure, was vomiting regularly and displaying odd and incoherent behavior, jail staff "ignored the obvious signs of medical distress" and "failed to provide proper medication as Elisa's condition was worsening," the complaint alleges.Sheriff's officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the suit, which names San Diego County and Sheriff Bill Gore as defendants.Plaintiffs in the suit include Serna's parents, Michael and Paloma Serna; her husband, Brandon Honeycutt, and a minor child referred to as S.H.The sheriff's department has come under fire recently over a spate of deaths among county jail inmates, which were referenced within the complaint.The lawsuit cited news reports indicating the county had the highest jail mortality rate among the state's largest counties, and said prior deaths from inmates suffering from withdrawal symptoms should have made jail staff aware of the potentially fatal consequences of those symptoms.The suit also alleges staff are inadequately trained and in-custody deaths at county jails are not being properly investigated."Even though inmates are dying or suffering catastrophic injuries at an alarming rate at San Diego County jails, the medical and correctional staff whose actions or inactions cause the deaths are not investigated; not informed of their failures; not given further training or remedial instruction; and are not monitored or closely supervised after these adverse events," the lawsuit alleges. 2111

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was stabbed in the hands and pistol whipped in North Park Saturday after refusing to carry drugs from Mexico into the United States, police said.The victim, 49, was pressured by six friends earlier in the day to transport drugs from Mexico across the border, but he refused, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.They saw him later at 3 a.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of 30th Street, Martinez said."They got into a confrontation with him, and during the confrontation the victim was stabbed in both hands and pistol whipped," the officer said.The victim received a laceration to both hands and a laceration to the top of the head from being pistol whipped, Martinez said.The main suspect was a man known to the victim, he said. The other suspects were three men and two women. They all fled in a white Kia SUV with Mexico plates.Mid City Division detectives will be handling the investigation. 950
