DAMASCUS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Thursday that Syria is willing to enhance cooperation with China on the basis of mutual benefits.     Moallem made the pledge during a meeting with Wu Sike, China's Special Envoy to the Middle East, and both sides discussed bilateral relations and the latest situation in the Middle East region.     Wu reiterated that China supports Syria's commitment to achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the relevant UN resolutions. Visiting China's speicial envoy on Middle East affairs Wu Sike (L) meets with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem in Damascus, capital of Syria, July 30, 2009    "The meeting with Minister al-Moallem focused on bilateral relations and the changes and developments in the region, where both sides expressed mutual support for the efforts in this regard to find a solution for the Middle East problem," Wu told reporters following the meeting.     "I expressed gratitude to Syria, the government and people, for its support to China in a number of issues concerning China's sovereignty and territory integrity," the senior Chinese diplomat said.     "We have distinguished relations with Syria and we are proud of these relations. However, we need to make efforts to develop bilateral relations further through political, economic and cultural cooperation and coordination in the international arenas," Wu added.     Wu Sike arrived in Damascus on Thursday. As the special representative of the Chinese Foreign Minister, he had visited Algeria and Qatar before reaching Syria.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China is to hold a National Day military and mass parade as well as an evening gala on Tian'anmen Square Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).     Following will be highlights of the once-in-a-decade grand celebrations:     -- Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, will be on Tian'anmen Rostrum to observe the parade.     -- President Hu is to review line-ups of the tri-service People's Liberation Army (PLA), standing in an open-top home-made Red Flag limousine.     -- National flag raising ceremony will be held on Tian'anmen Square.     -- Military parade is expected to involve more than 8,000 people, and a total of 52 types of new weapon systems, including the PLA's missiles, airborne early warning and control aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and other sophisticated military hardware, will be shown.     -- Military paraders will march goose-step through the square in new-style uniforms initiated in 2007.     -- Women militia soldiers in purple skirts will march goose-step through Tian'anmen Square, holding submachine guns. The formation will be led by two models who used to be good at cat walking.     -- Snow Leopard armed police unit, which took charge of security of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will be shown at the National Day parade.     -- Sixteen female fighter pilots, the country's first batch, are expected to make a debut in a fly-past at the parade.     -- Civilian formations will march through Tian'anmen Square, showcasing panoramic achievements China has made over the past sixdecades. The mass parade will feature dozens of floats themed with, for instance, the Beijing Olympics and the devastating Wenchuan earthquake in southwestern Sichuan last year.     -- Improved relations between the mainland and Taiwan will be showcased at the parade.     -- China's agriculture scientist, Yuan Longping, will wave his iconic invention of "super hybrid rice" atop of an agriculture-themed float, escorted by farmers.     -- China's first astronaut Yang Liwei and first space walker Zhai Zhigang will show up on a float along with four other colleagues that have entered the space aboard Shenzhou series of spaceships since 2003.     -- Hurdler Liu Xiang and diving diva Guo Jingjing will stand ona float to show the achievements in sports. Chinese athletes reaped 51 gold medals in the Beijing Olympics, ranking the first in the gold medal list.     -- About 60,000 people will dance to the song "I Love China" at the grandiose National Day evening gala, showcasing the country's ethnic harmony and development.     -- Fireworks, designed by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang who masterminded the firework display at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, will dazzle the night of the National Day.     -- About 4,000 performers will form a "light cubic" formation in the center of Tian'anmen Square at the gala. They will hold bouquets and electric devices to form different light patterns to the tunes of music.

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The China Economic and Social Council(CESC) wants to boost exchanges with Niger's Economic, Social and Cultural Council (CESOC), a senior Chinese official said Friday.     Wang Gang, chairman of the CESC and member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when he met with the chairman of the CESOC Amadou Cheiffou in Beijing.     Both councils grouped experts in social and economic development, Wang said, and could learn from each other, as they deepened cooperation.  Wang Gang (R), member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee,vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference,and chairman of China Economic and Social Council, meets with Cheiffou Amadou, chairman of Niger's Economic, Social and Cultural Council, in Beijing, capital of China, on Aug. 28, 2009    Wang, also vice chairman of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the two nations' relations had developed well since they resumed diplomatic ties 13years ago.     He also expressed appreciation to Niger's adherence to the one-China policy and its support on issues related to Taiwan and Tibet.     Cheiffou said the CESOC would continue to work to further its traditional relationship with China.     Cheiffou began the eight-day visit on Aug. 23. Beijing is the last leg of his tour, which has also taken in Shanghai and Guangzhou.

  

  

NANJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has called on authorities at various levels to step up patriotic education in the run-up to celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Liu, also a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a recent inspection tour in the eastern province of Jiangsu.     Liu said patriotic education should serve the development and stability of China's reform, and should be included in the process of tackling the global financial crisis, and maintaining the country's steady and relatively fast economic development.     He urged the authorities to incorporate patriotic education into the daily life of the Chinese people, to "turn their love for the country into concrete actions."     Patriotic education should focus on China's youths and teenagers, Liu said, adding that the development of "red tourism", which mainly consists of visiting sites related to the history of the CPC and its armed forces, should also be highlighted.
