NEW ORLEANS, La. – Just before the lunch rush at one New Orleans restaurant, the hottest spot is the kitchen. The place is Café Reconcile: a restaurant that caters to both customers and its employees. “It’s not your typical job. It’s not the typical restaurant,” said Chef Eugene Charles Temple, Jr. “We come in here to change lives.” The café specializes in teaching culinary skills to disadvantaged young people, by training them to take on all aspects of restaurant work. It goes far beyond that, though. The café offers counseling and teaches classes on life skills – like how to open a bank account. “No one’s forcing them to come here,” said Gerald Duhon, Executive Director of Café Reconcile. “They want a change in their life.” Ahmaad Lott felt that first-hand. “To be honest, you know, I wasn’t in a great situation,” Lott said. Several years ago, he was facing mental health issues. Lott got help and eventually rose through the ranks at Café Reconcile to become a trainer to others dealing with similar circumstances. “That was me a few years ago,” Lott said. “I barely know this young person, but to know their story resonates to my story so deeply, and in a way that, you know, we can share our experiences and grow together.” Several thousand young people have graduated from Café Reconcile since it began more than two decades ago. However, the issue of “disconnected youth” is not limited to New Orleans. A 2014 Tulane University study found that, across the country, there are 6.7 million disconnected youth, costing the U.S. economy billion a year in lost tax revenues and needed social services. “The way we look at it is our young people don’t have anything wrong with them,” Duhon said. “What they have that many young people do not have is support—and particularly support around the barriers that are in their life.” It’s a support for which Ahmaad Lott says he’s grateful. “That gave me that avenue, that gave me that channel to really make something of myself,” he said. Boeing is facing a growing number of lawsuits after 346 people died in two crashes involving 737 MAX planes. The family of one passenger, 24-year-old Samya Stumo, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company. “The potential of my sister and 156 others driven straight into the ground because of Boeing’s greed,” said Stumo’s brother, Adnaan, in a press conference. Kevin Durkin, an attorney representing Stumo’s family, says more than 20 whistleblowers have come forward, including pilots and Boeing engineers, who raised concerns about the plane and pilot training. “I think this plane, as designed, should never fly again,” Durkin said. “I think there has to be major changes in it that ensures it's safe.” Boeing is updating its software to fix the problem detected in both of the 737 MAX plane crashes. However, it's not just victims' families suing Boeing. The company’s own shareholders just filed a lawsuit, claiming the company put its profits ahead of airplane safety and honesty. MILWAUKEE -- One of the Milwaukee County Zoo's harbor seals has died days after she gave birth to a seal pup, Zoo officials announced Tuesday.Sydney, who arrived at the Zoo in 2005 after being rescued as an orphaned pup herself, gave birth to a male seal pup on June 3. Three days later, Sydney died unexpectedly. Officials say a preliminary necropsy shows Sydney died of a "systemic infection" - which begins in one area and then moves to the bloodstream, affecting the entire body.The pup, who has not yet been named, is being hand-raised by zookeepers and animal care staff. He was the fifth pup born to Sydney and her companion, Ringo."Keepers are assist-feeding the pup five times daily with a milk replacer formula made specifically for marine mammals which includes a high fat content and vitamins," a news release from the Zoo says. "Normally, harbor seals nurse 4-6 weeks before weaning. In the meantime, finely ground fish is gradually being added to the formula. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – All four police officers involved in the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis are now facing charges. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced Wednesday afternoon that former officer Derek Chauvin’s murder charge has been upgraded from third-degree to second-degree. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane are being charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder for their role in Floyd's death.
