(KGTV) - An innovative young baker from Mount Helix is raising money for Parkinson's disease research in honor of her beloved grandfather, who is battling the disease.As many have done during these unusual times, Zoe Bernard took on a popular pandemic hobby."I learned how to make banana bread," says the 9 year-old.As Zoe perfected the recipe, she felt like something was missing, so she started experimenting with different ingredients, getting more bold as her creations continued to receive rave reviews from friends and neighbors. She took custom orders, adding nuts, candy bar pieces and including a couple of secret ingredients. The warm reception led her to begin selling her creations, but not to pad her own pockets. She and her mother Tina Contogenis discussed what would be most beneficial. Zoe decided to donate her profits to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research.Her "Papa" Joe Contogenis was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. The tough Marine is facing a difficult battle, with a tremor in his arm, and an increasing number of hard days.Zoe and Joe have a special relationship. Joe lives five houses down from Zoe. He describes her as "an incredible young person with the biggest heart."Their neighbors have caught on to Zoe's effort, adding items to sell at a bake sale last Saturday, or overpaying and refusing to take their change.Tina says they've been overwhelmed by the response. LA MESA (KGTV) -- East County residents are worried about thousands of parolees flocking to their community. The state wants to add a parole office in the city of La Mesa but residents are not happy about the proposed location, saying it's too close to their schools and homes. “I’m very uncomfortable with the prospect of violent and sexual offenders routinely coming into my neighborhood,” says Susan Nichols with the Grossmont- Mt. Helix Improvement Association. The new building sits at the end of Grossmont Summit Drive, directly behind homes on Mt. Helix. The location is in close proximity to local schools, less than a mile from Grossmont High School and Mt. Helix Academy. “The bus stop that would service this facility is directly in front of Grossmont High School, the same stop that the students will be using,” says Nichols.Supervisor Dianne Jacob sent her community a letter the Department of Corrections addressed to the La Mesa City Clerk. Parent Wendy Tinsley Becker says she’s extremely concerned about the children in this area. Her family made copies of the letter and hand-delivered them to neighbors living close to the site. Supervisor Jacob sent 10News a statement that says in part: “I’m deeply troubled by the state proposal and I share the residents’ concerns about the impact on public safety. Allowing convicted criminals to frequent an area that close to thousands of Grossmont High School students and quiet neighborhoods is a terrible idea.”The La Mesa City Clerk says they are doing what they can to prevent the parole office from coming to the city. 10News reached out to the State Department of Corrections about the location. They responded in part:“The men and women who will be served at this office lived there before they were incarcerated and have returned to the community. Named for the ancient British site Stonehenge, where the sun lines up among ancient stones on the solstice, the sun lines up with the gap in La Jolla’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier on certain days of the year. The natural phenomenon makes for spectacular photos. This summer, Scrippshenge is set to take place August 7 - 9, according to the Photo Ephemeris app. “You might even get the shot on Aug 10/11 also, probably with a partially set sun,” says Stephen Trainor of Crookneck Apps. “You'll see the sunset line is ever so slightly to the north of the pier center: that's what you need, because sunset is the moment the sun disappears below the horizon, hence in order to frame the setting sun between the legs of the pier, it still needs to be just above the horizon, and therefore true sunset has to be just slightly to the north,” says Trainor. Latinos are more likely to have to stay in the hospital and are also more likely to die from coronavirus, according to experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).A number of factors contribute to a higher risk, including language barriers and not receiving important information in their native language.That's why communities across the country are focusing on finding bilingual contact tracers.Community Care of North Carolina has a team of them.“We do try to find individuals that match the community, because that's what builds the trust, and people are more willing to talk to people that are like them, and their community,” said Christina Page with Community Care of North Carolina. “So, we try really hard to try to find bilingual individuals who can go out into the community.”Not only are people in the Latino community more willing to speak to a contact tracer, it's also easier to speak about their own health.“It is hard for the community to communicate through interpreters and that is a barrier for trust. It is easy for somebody, if you are talking in your language, to connect and express how you are feeling and what are the problems that you have,” said Wendy Pascual with Community Care North Carolina.Contact tracers aren't just finding people who have been exposed to coronavirus. They're often giving people information they had not received before and also connecting families with resources that help them get food and pay for utilities.There's also need for contact tracers who speak other languages, but the biggest need is for people who speak Spanish. 1609
