DEL MAR, CA (KGTV) -- From the starting line to the finish line, opening day to the final race of the season, the Del Mar racetrack prides itself on injury-free races. And with the Summer 2020 season having just wrapped up, the track was ranked as the safest racetrack in the country for the third straight year."It didn't come easily," says Del Mar Thoroughbred Club President Joe Harper. "A few years ago we just woke up to the fact that these horse injuries were climbing, and we had to figure out what was going on."So four years ago, they decided to make some changes. All in the hopes of making the sport safer for the horses, and the jockeys. And it all started with dissecting the track."We found the best guy in the world, the best dirt guy there is, and it was Dennis Moore. He took the track completely apart and told us there were a few problems. We knew it would cost a lot of money, but I said spend all you want."Joe says they also stepped up the evaluations on every racehorse. And for a summer racing season, that means close to 2,000."We go back through our databases, and find what this horses have been doing, where they have been, and how they have been training."The track has also increased the number of veterinarians at the track."In the morning during workouts we've hired more vets to come in and watch the horses. We also have veterinarians go in and look at the horses in the stalls, and the receiving barns. There are vets everywhere."This past season, they had to euthanize one horse injured in a race, as well as two other horses injured while training. "What we're really looking for is zero but compared to where we were, and compared to other tracks, for the last three years we've been the safest track in North America." 1767

DENVER — Twenty years ago, Gary Jugert found love at a music shop."I bought a ukulele at a secondhand store and back then there weren’t any books or classes so I had to teach myself how to play ukulele. It turns out it’s a very fun and exciting instrument that you can share with other people," Jugert said.He began teaching lessons and even opened up a ukulele repair shop, though he says he was not a naturally musical person."I didn't start music seriously until I was 35," he said.Still, in 2012, Jugert created the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra. It was a huge hit until the pandemic silenced its 100 or so musicians in March."We instantaneously could not meet anymore and so several of us decided, hey, what are our alternatives for getting the group together?" Jugert said. "And we tried all of the various platforms. The problem was there’s a tiny bit of a lag on Zoom classes and because we play instrumental — ensemble music — it doesn’t work without post-editing. I said, 'Well, why don’t we meet on YouTube?'"That is how this silver lining came to be. Each morning, Jugert heads to his spare bedroom where people from all over the world log on for his lessons.He said 90% of the people who log on are 55 and older, and 80% are women.He's become such a hit, he now teaches six 45-minute classes every day."I just love it," Jugert said.His students say this is about so much more than making music."It’s just such a good social outlet. I retired a year and a half ago so I don’t see my work friends anymore," said student, Jeri Sampson. They need quality education. Musically, it’s hard to get right now. I think with the challenges music teachers are facing in music education, why not do it?" Race officials say safety, for riders and horses, is the top priority for everyone. The Bing Crosby season is 15 days shorter than the summer season. Trainers say the Del Mar track is one the best because of San Diego's weather. "This track, especially in the fall, is the safest dirt track in the world," says trainer Bob Hess.
