A storm system causing severe weather Sunday along the Gulf Coast is forecast to move off the East Coast, turn into a nor'easter and threaten the Northeastern United States on Monday night into Tuesday.The storm's exact path remains a bit uncertain, but the system will bring precipitation and wind in what will be the third significant winter storm in the past 10 days.A winter storm watch is in effect for 8.5 million people in New England, including residents of Boston and Portland, Maine. The National Weather Service Boston estimated 6 to 8 inches of snow for parts of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.New York, Philadelphia and Washington are only under a hazardous weather outlook at this time. The next forecast update will come at 8 p.m. on Sunday.The American model forecasts heavy snowfall for areas of New England and upstate New York, whereas the European model shows less snowfall. Still, both models agree there will be more snow on the way for the Northeast.If the nor'easter tracks closer to the coast, then stronger winds and coastal flooding may become issues as well.Last weekend, a powerful nor'easter that morphed into a "bomb cyclone" slammed much of the Northeast with heavy snow and rain, hurricane-force wind gusts, and significant coastal flooding. The storm left six people dead from falling trees, and about 900,000 people lost electrical power.As residents were still digging out from that snow, a second storm hit the Northeast late last week. The storm dropped heavy, wet snow in areas west of Interstate 95, leaving feet of snow in some areas. One 88-year-old woman died Wednesday when a tree fell and struck her in Suffern, in southern New York, police said.This winter's snowfall totals so far sit around the annual average at this point for the major Northeast hubs of Boston, New York and Philadelphia, according to the National Weather Service. 1937

A recent study appears to show a person’s blood type might indicate whether they will develop severe respiratory failure if they contract COVID-19.The study sequenced genomes of 1,600 COVID-19 patients in Spain and Italy who had been hospitalized with severe respiratory failure and compared the results to DNA sequences of 2,205 healthy subjects.Results appear to show that people with type A blood had a higher chance of developing severe respiratory failure as compared to people with O blood type. The study claims there may be a “protective effect” for blood group O. However this study has not been peer-reviewed yet and the exact kind or extent of “protective effect” is not known.In early June, the site 23andme.com released results from information gathered from 750,000 participants who identified they had COVID-19. The genealogy company said their research suggests a similar effect in people with O blood type. “Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said.They said while there was a significant difference in those with O blood type, there “appeared to be little differences in susceptibility among the other blood types.”However, some are questioning this idea that people with type O blood are protected. Laura Cooling is the director of immunohematology at the University of Michigan. She noted that the idea that having type O blood is protective doesn’t match with current COVID-19 infection rates.Type O blood is usually more prevalent among African Americans, according to the American Red Cross, yet new information from the CDC and states indicate African Americans have experienced disproportionately high COVID-19 infection rates. Cooling says there are many factors to consider.“It’s what your blood type is, relative to the other person who exposed you, relative to all the other genetic and acquired health conditions you have,” she told Chemical and Engineering News on the matter. 2069

A new campaign is bringing attention to an issue that hasn't been front and center since the pandemic started – missing children.“There has been a lot of awareness, a lot of things have changed, but regarding her case, unfortunately there's nothing,” said Jessica Nu?ez about her missing 15-year-old daughter, Alicia Navarro.Navarro, who has autism, was 14 when she vanished in the middle of the night last September from her home in Glendale, Arizona.Alicia played online games and her mother thinks she was lured away by someone she met online. They had even discussed the dangers in therapy.“And then she wrote me a letter where she sweared to me she was coming back, so that’s what has me very worried, because I know her intention was for her to come back and that’s why I won’t stop looking,” said Nu?ez. “I won’t stop looking until I get answers because it’s been so long.”In a new effort to bring attention to missing children like Alicia Navarro, their pictures will be featured on some gas station pump video screens. A request from children is changing the future of LEGO kits. The company announced they will be phasing out their single-use plastic bags used to separate parts of their kits beginning next year.“We have received many letters from children about the environment asking us to remove single-use plastic packaging. We have been exploring alternatives for some time and the passion and ideas from children inspired us to begin to make the change,” stated CEO Niels Christiansen in a company release.The toymaker has set a goal of making all of their packaging sustainable by the end of 2025. Beginning in 2021, they will look at using recyclable paper bags in their kits.Testing has already taken place, and LEGO says kids liked the paper bags because they were environmentally friendly and easy to open.Other LEGO products will be getting an environmentally friendly makeover in the future, too. A public school administrator in Nashville has resigned following the disclosure of a secret recording where he plotted to bypass filters designed to protect children from exposure to lead in their water.Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) executive director of facilities Dennis Neal, resigned Friday, according to MNPS communications director Olivia Brown. Neal had been placed on administrative leave while the district investigated.Neal's resignation came less than a week after Scripps station WTVF in Nashville?uncovered the recording from inside a meeting of schools maintenance employees.Recording Reveals Plan To 'Bypass' Lead FilterFor the past nine months, WVTF has exposed data kept secret by the district showing high lead levels in some Metro schools. Lead is a toxic metal that can cause learning and behavioral problems in children.In response, a number of schools installed special fountains that were supposed to filter out the lead.
