SARASOTA, Fla. — A Florida woman says she fell ill with COVID-19 and passed the coronavirus onto her 99-year-old mother who lives with her.Ruta Jouniari said she felt sick in October. She had a fever, cough and headache."I literally couldn't breathe. I tried to take a breath and the pain in my lungs was so incredible," she said.Jouniari was hospitalized at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for three days, but did not need oxygen."The nights were horrific, you have night sweats, shivering. You're achy. You can't breathe," she said.Her mother, who Jouniari is the primary caregiver of in her home, later tested positive for COVID-19.Jouniari said her mother never left the house, so she knows she brought the virus home, but she doesn't know where she contracted it.Her mother's age put her at a high risk of contracting the virus. Her mother, she added, suffered from a stroke about seven years ago."The guilt trip that goes with a child giving their parent COVID is not a fun reality of life," she said.Jouniari said her mother was hospitalized for 10 days. She was on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. Doctors treated her mother with plasma, remdesivir and dexamethasone."Going in, it's so frightening and you're so scared and you're scared for yourself when you're the patient, but you're even more scared knowing the statistics of a 99-year-old going in," said Jouniari.Jouniari said her mother left the hospital on Monday."For her to come out and come home today and she's in her own room, her own bed, breathing on two liters of oxygen. It's just amazing," she said.She urges everyone to take precautions and protect the vulnerable population."I hate to say this, but you could kill them. I was witness to that. I could have. My mom is a miracle of miracles. She's a statistic anomaly. She shouldn't have made it and she did," said Jouniari.She said she appreciates everyone who prayed for her mother. She said she is also thankful for the doctors and nurses who cared for her mother."I had over 800 people praying for her and it was incredible...the power of that was just amazing," Jouniari said. "For those families who are suffering, I hope they have solace and peace, just pray hard and have faith just know that people at 99 make it out. SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Northern California say a 70-year-old man has died in one of the three giant wildfires burning around the San Francisco Bay Area. The man had been reported missing and authorities used a helicopter to reach the location where they found him in the rural community of Last Chance in Santa Cruz County. The area was under an evacuation order and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Chris Clark said it was a stark reminder of the need for residents to leave the area. SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A motorist was killed in a multi-vehicle crash this morning involving a semi truck on state Route 78 in San Marcos and another motorist suffered major injuries in a rollover crash around four-and-a-half hours later on the opposite side of the highway, authorities said.A semi truck was reportedly disabled around 12:15 a.m. in the left lane of eastbound state Route 78 west of Twin Oaks Valley Road, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.At 12:55 a.m., someone told dispatchers that a vehicle crashed into the back of the semi truck and the vehicle was totaled.The driver of the Honda CRV that struck the semi truck was killed in the crash, CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said.CHECK 10NEWS TRAFFIC MAPAt 5:35 a.m., a crash between a Ford pickup and two other vehicles on westbound SR-78 west of Twin Oaks Valley Road caused the pickup to overturn and land on its roof, Doerr said. (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's Department officials say no charges will be filed against a couple who wore a swastika mask at a Santee grocery store in May.SDSO said after investigating there wasn't enough evidence to charge the couple with a crime.On May 7, SDSO says a man and woman walked into a Food 4 Less wearing surgical masks with swastika symbols attached to them. The store's management asked the couple to remove the masks, and after they refused, deputies were called, SDSO said.Deputies arrived and asked the couple to also remove the masks, to which the man reportedly replied, "I'm not here promoting some Nazi propaganda. I'm here peacefully protesting against the Governor's insane lockdown."The man also told deputies he was upset and frustrated with the state lockdown.After deputies told the man the store has the right to refuse business and asked them again to remove their masks, they did."This incident should serve as a reminder for anyone contemplating wearing or displaying items closely associated with hate and human suffering that our society does not tolerate this behavior," an SDSO spokesperson said in a release. "Santee is a city of families and the community is rightfully disgusted at this couple's despicable behavior. (KGTV) - Voters are expressing confusion and frustration after receiving a mailer titled 'COPS Voter Guide.'Brandon Salgado was sorting through the mail this past weekend at his grandfather’s home in Santee when he saw the political mailer."It’s got the badge, says 'COPS Voter Guide.' On the back it says 'COPS' and it's red and blue. Looks like something law enforcement would back," said Salgado.Salgado has family members that work in and with law enforcement, and took a closer look at the mailer’s list of ‘priority’ propositions. At the top, next to Prop 16, which involves the issue of affirmative action, is the word 'NO,' and an arrow pointing to a mailer's description of the proposition: 'For Racial Equality.'"I was shocked that someone should put out that law enforcement is 'No' for racial equality. Just didn’t sit well with me. It’s a bad look, bad optics," said Salgado.Salgado, who thought the mailer had police backing, then saw the fine print, which says 'This organization does not represent any public safety personnel.'So what does it represent?A video on the the COPS Voter Guide website says the Folsom-based group is a non-partisan, public advocacy organization.“The candidates we support have pledged to make public safety a top priority,” explains the group's director in the video.During the 2016 presidential election, the Modesto Bee described it as a 'pay-to-play mailer,' disguising advertisements as endorsements. On the mailer itself, there is the phrase 'paid for' by the candidates or ballot measures."It’s completely misleading ...
