An operation is underway to evacuate thousands of tourists after a deadly earthquake that rocked some of Indonesia's most idyllic islands late Sunday night. At least 98 people, all Indonesian nationals, were killed when the 6.9 magnitude quake struck the popular tourist island of Lombok, Indonesian authorities said Monday. More than 200 were also injured. The majority of those killed in the quake were hit by falling debris from collapsing buildings, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the head of Indonesia's disaster management department. In total, an estimated 20,000 people have been displaced by the massive earthquake, Nugroho said.Dramatic video tweeted by authorities showed hundreds of people, many believed to be foreign vacationers, crammed onto a beach on the island of Gili Trawangan as evacuation measures got underway.Emergency personnel were racing to evacuate thousands of tourists from the three small Gili Islands as night began to fall. The islands, famous for their white sandy beaches and clear waters, are located near the epicenter of the quake on Lombok.Earlier rescue efforts were hampered by shallow waters, but rising sea waters mean nine ships are now expected to dock on the islands. So far, up to 2,700 tourists have been moved from the Gili Islands, according to Nugroho. He added that Lombok's airport was now open around the clock and had significantly increased its flight schedule. The epicenter of the quake was in northern Lombok, a more residential, less developed part of the island. The majority of Lombok's tourist resorts are on the island's southern coast.British tourist Mike Bennett, stranded on the island of Gili Meno along with around 100 other people, told CNN he faced an anxious night ahead."It's getting dark now," he said. "There's no power, there's no water, we're going to hold out and just see what happens tomorrow." 1879
An aspiring dancer from Alabama thought she would be ticketed — or worse — by a Birmingham police officer after he approached her about dancing in the middle of a street.Lala Diore, who has been dancing since she was 3, according to WBRC-TV in Birmingham, was filming an audition video to send to singer Janet Jackson while Officer Philip Jones was driving by.According to Diore's Facebook post, Jones told Diore that she shouldn't be in the middle of the street, but quickly changed his tune."So you are risking getting hurt for this," Jones asked, according to Diore's Facebook post. "...okay I’ll stop traffic for you and cut my lights on, show me what you got."Jones then blocked traffic with his cruiser, and turned up his headlights to help Diore get the shot. "This has actually showed the world and the community that police officers are not just out here to harass people or that we’re being mean and uptight," Jones told WBRC. "It shows we are human and we can have a little fun." 1023

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — A 30th horse has died at Santa Anita on the last weekend of racing before the Southern California track closes for the season.Mike Marten, a spokesman for the California Horse Racing Board, says a 4-year-old gelding named American Currency was injured Saturday while exercising on the training track and was euthanized. The board had recommended that Santa Anita suspend the current meet following a string of deaths since Dec. 26, but management chose to continue until the last day of the meet on Sunday.Track owner, The Stronach Group, formed a panel to review horses' medical, training and racing history for the final six racing days. But Marten says American Currency wasn't entered to run in any race and thus wasn't subject to review by the panel. The horse is the fourth from the stable of Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer to die at the track. Hollendorfer was banned from Santa Anita following the latest death. The Stronch Group said in a statement that Hollendorfer "is no longer welcome to stable, race or train his horses at any of our facilities."On the recommendation of the special panel, the track's stewards scratched four horses trained by Hollendorfer that were to run Saturday and Sunday. 1244
As Florida begins to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, the political campaigns of major candidates in Florida are officially on hold. But political ads continued to run on TV even as many Floridians were running for their lives. One attack ad in particular, paid for by the Republican Party of Florida, was on air criticizing the way Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum handled the city's response to Hurricane Hermine back in 2016.The ad, made in coordination with Republican candidate for Governor Ron Desantis, aired frequently in the days leading up to the storm and was only pulled after Desantis was questioned about it, and the GOP said they would eventually pull it from the airwaves amid criticism from viewers and even state officials. 770
