Running out of ideas to entertain your kids? A California writer and performer took his ideas, got crafty on Instagram and it has kids everywhere giggling. Avery Monsen took us behind the scenes of the "Super Secret Secret Club."Monsen has a lot of day jobs these days. He writes and illustrates books for children and adults, he's done some acting and he's been in commercials. But these days, Hollywood isn't doing much. One day a friend of his asked him to make a video to help entertain his own kids, who were quite literally climbing the walls.“He knows that I have this sort of grab bag of circus and magic tricks and skills that are very rarely actually useful in life, but they are useful in entertaining children,” said Monsen. And so, the Super Secret Secret Club was born. You can find it online, on Instagram or on Instagram TV, and it is full of good, clean fun.“It’s just a bunch of cardboard and duct tape, but there’s also all these strings that go everywhere we’re probably going to lose our security deposit on this place, whoops,” said Monsen. There's no market research about what kids like and Avery describes himself as a someone who is quite possibly still a kid.“I think I’m just making things that I like is the truth, and my taste is the taste of a 4 and 9-year-old. The things that I think are funny are the things a 4-year-old thinks are funny,” said Monsen. He also made activity pages for kids. There's puzzles and games and even a Super Secret Secret Club membership card.“I knew that kids were going to get bored and antsy in the quarantine times. I felt the least I could do is make some fun videos for them," said Monsen.Monsen isn't in it for the clicks, likes or comments. He's purely helping kids laugh, for free. And admittedly, he says, he needed a project and he happens to have a garage full of crafts as well as a huge paper maché pet rock named Anthony, who talks, by the way.“Which maybe means I’m a bit of a hoarder. I have a lot of cardboard. We had just moved into this new apartment which had a garage. Before that, I was doing projects in the living room which made my wife very sad,” said Monsen. His content has kids everywhere giggling and Monsen says, “when you’re devoting your entire week to making a silly video and you’re not getting paid for any of it, getting videos of kids enjoying it and doing the activities and laughing really, really makes it worthwhile.”Certainly, it’s a worthwhile effort from a guy who has all the tricks, trades and a huge knack for making all the little ones laugh during a time when giggles are hard to come by. 2603

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gavin Newsom is the favorite in California's governor's race, and if he's elected his extensive business holdings could present an ethics problem. His company, PlumpJack Group, owns wineries, bars, restaurants, hotels and liquor stores that operate in California. Issues involving the hospitality industry often come before the governor.Newsom is adamant he won't sell his interests but otherwise is deferring decisions about how to handle potential ethics conflicts until after the election.RELATED: John Cox, Gavin Newsom battle it out in debateThe potential for blurred lines between business and government service has become especially resonant since President Donald Trump broke with tradition for U.S. presidents and chose not to divest from his extensive holdings.Republican candidate John Cox also is a millionaire with extensive holdings, but his businesses operate outside California.RELATED: Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox's plan for California 1012

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's governor on Friday threatened a possible takeover of the troubled utility blamed for sparking deadly wildfires across the state with its outdated equipment unless it can emerge from bankruptcy ahead of next year's wildfire season with a plan focused on safety.Gov. Gavin Newsom called all sides to a meeting early next week, saying he would personally try to mediate a solution involving Pacific Gas & Electric. But if an agreement can't be reached, Newsom said, "then the state will prepare itself as backup for a scenario where we do that job for them."PG&E has come under more scrutiny in recent weeks as it cut off power to millions of people to avoid a repeat of last year's deadly fire season. The shutoffs have angered residents, businesses and local governments, who say the company has done a poor job of communicating."This is not the new normal," Newsom said. "There are things that can be done immediately and will be done immediately."It's unclear how the state could take over PG&E in the event it does not meet the June 30th deadline. But the governor's office pointed to General Motors as an example. The automaker filed for bankruptcy in 2009, and the federal government purchased a controlling stake in the company. The government later sold its shares once the company was on solid footing."That kind of a move would give the state a lot of control over the strategic direction that PG&E takes without getting it into the nitty gritty of running the day to day," said Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy Policy Program at the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University.Local governments, including San Francisco, have offered to purchase portions of PG&E's equipment for .5 billion so it could operate parts of the power system on its own. Asked if taxpayers would buy the company, Newsom said: "We're scoping all of that.""It's not writing a check," Newsom said. "This is not plan 'A,' but it is a plan. We would be irresponsible not to scope that plan. So we're not going to sit back and hope and hope an expectation that everything else works out."Pacific Gas & Electric filed for bankruptcy earlier this year after a 2018 wildfire mostly destroyed the town of Paradise and killed 85 people. An investigation revealed the fire was started by one of the company's powerlines that was knocked down during a windstorm. The utility is facing up to billion in damages from that fire and others.Shareholders and creditors have been battling for control of the utility in bankruptcy court, offering two competing plans for the company's future.A federal judge has expressed concern the two sides are not making progress, and last week appointed a mediator to try and resolve the case.In June, Newsom signed a law setting up a billion fund that could help utility companies pay out claims for future wildfires as climate change makes them more frequent and destructive.Utility companies would have to spend at least billion on safety improvements and meet new safety standards to participate. PG&E would have to be out of bankruptcy by June 30th to use the fund.Friday, Newsom called on PG&E executives, shareholders and creditors along with wildfire victims to meet with him. Newsom said he is confident the meeting will occur. However, representatives for the largest groups of bondholders and shareholders did not respond to a request for comment.PG&E spokesman James Noonan indicated the company would participate."We welcome the governor's and the state's engagement on these vital matters and share the same goal of fairly resolving the wildfire claims and exiting the Chapter 11 process as quickly as possible," he said. 3762

Runners showed up on Sunday morning to race in the TCS New York City Marathon, which went ahead as planned despite last week's terror attack -- the worst in the city since September 11, 2001.On Tuesday, officials say, Sayfullo Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbek living in New Jersey, drove a truck down a Manhattan bike path near the World Trade Center before slamming into a school bus.On Thursday, Saipov was charged with federal terrorism offenses in the attack that left eight people dead and a dozen others wounded. In the days since, city and state officials have assured attendees of Sunday's marathon that the event would be safe, and they ramped up security."You'll have thousands of officers on duty this weekend," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a news conference on Saturday. "But I want to stress, this is just a precautionary measure. We have no information that points to any issues."A record number of city sand trucks and New York Police Department blocker vehicles were scheduled to line the roadways to protect pedestrians, police Chief Carlos Gomez said Friday. The TCS New York City Marathon is expected to draw more than 50,000 runners, who will make their way through five boroughs while 2.5 million spectators cheer them on."I hear it's the greatest walking tour of New York with 50,000 of your best friends," said Michael Steiner, a 46-year-old from Maplewood, New Jersey, who is participating for the first time on Sunday.Steiner said he feels great, and while the event is just days after last week's attack, he's only worried about one thing."The trap," he said. "The biggest marathoner's fear is that the adrenaline gets the best of you and you run way too fast in the beginning and get killed at the end." 1748

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- The man who bought two rifles that terrorists used to kill 14 people in a 2015 attack in San Bernardino, California, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.Enrique Marquez Jr. supplied the weapons that Syed Rizwan Farook and Farook's wife used to open fire on a meeting and holiday gathering of San Bernardino County employees who worked with Farook. The couple fled after killing 14 people and wounding 22 and died later that day in a gunbattle with authorities.Marquez showed no emotion during the federal court hearing Friday as relatives of the victims asked a judge to give him a lengthy sentence. 637
