SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Sunday reported 3,493 COVID-19 infections as of Saturday and no new deaths, bringing the county's total to 126,465 cases and the death toll remaining at 1,280.Prior to Sunday's report, a record 3,611 COVID-19 infections were reported Friday. Wohlfeil's preliminary injunction, which was issued Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by two San Diego strip clubs Wohlfeil ultimately ruled could remain open.Wohlfeil's ruling also encompassed all restaurants in the county and all businesses that provide "restaurant service."Three justices from the Fourth District Court of Appeals, District One, read and considered the order and stayed the injunction "pending further order of this court." The court ordered any oppositions to the state's filing to be submitted by noon Wednesday, according to an appeals court docket.Lawyers from the state argued that Wohlfeil overreached in his ruling, as no restaurants were parties in the suit initially filed in October by Cheetahs Gentleman's Club and Pacers Showgirls International.County supervisors met in closed session Friday to appeal the ruling made by Wohlfeil Wednesday."The board voted to appeal the order," said County Supervisor Greg Cox. "But the board directed county counsel to only argue that the order is incorrect as it relates to the continued operation of strip clubs and the allowance of indoor dining.""We support outdoor dining with appropriate safety protocols that have been previously established. We remind everyone that the virus is still out there," Cox said.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher concurred."I vehemently disagree with the recent judicial decision allowing strip clubs and all restaurant activities to resume, and I support appealing the entirety of the recent court ruling," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University will not begin any of its fall sports earlier than Sept. 26 due to the ongoing pandemic, the university's athletics department announced Thursday.This follows guidance from the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors, which decided Wednesday to adjust conference team schedules to allow additional monitoring of ongoing COVID-19 developments and adjustments to keep student-athletes safe.The SDSU Aztecs football team will shrink its schedule to 10 games and most other fall sports will only play conference opponents."The Mountain West athletic directors and the conference office worked hard to develop a game plan for fall sports that will allow student- athletes to have a great experience and take in to account their health and well-being," said SDSU Director of Athletics John David Wicker. "Starting the season later allows us the opportunity to learn from professional sports and other conferences and continue to develop the best protocols possible to ensure the safest return to play model possible."The conference and school schedules align with the NCAA Board of Governors' directions, also released this week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council is slated to vote next week on its intent to forward an initiative to the November ballot that would create an independent commission on police practices, which is available for review by the general public Thursday.The proposed Commission on Police Practices would review all deaths stemming from interactions with San Diego police, as well as all police shootings.Investigations into these matters would be conducted whether or not a complaint has been made against a particular officer or the department as a whole. Commission staff or contractors operating independently of the police department would conduct the investigations.(Read the proposed initiative text here)The commission may — but would not be required to — investigate complaints against officers not involving deaths or officer-related shootings, according to the proposed measure's language. The proposed body would have subpoena power to call witnesses or request records related to its investigations.The latest version of the proposed initiative, released Wednesday night, includes the addition of an appeals process for any officer the commission finds committed sustained incidences of misconduct. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego lifeguards and firefighters Sunday rescued a surfer who suffered a medical emergency while in the water in the Bird Rock area, authorities said.At 12:36 p.m., lifeguards and firefighters from the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department responded to the cliffs near Calumet Park about a surfer experiencing an unknown medical emergency, Lt. Andy Lerum of Lifeguard Services said.The man in his 60s experienced a possible heart-related ailment or seizure, but rescuers were not sure of the exact nature of his medical emergency, Lerum said.The man swam to the beach, where he collapsed and lifeguards began tending to him, the lieutenant said. He was taken by stretcher about 30 yards to the bottom of the cliff.Firefighters used the department's Rescue 44 truck, equipped with a crane, to lift the surfer from the beach to the top of the cliff, Lerum said. An ambulance then took the man to a La Jolla hospital for evaluation. He was reportedly in stable condition. 995
