SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A couple in San Diego are spending the holiday telling everyone they know to register as an organ donor."People don't like to talk about their death, but rather than bury these organs or burn them up, you can save lives," says Nancy Marlin, who is recovering from a kidney transplant.Marlin had a genetic kidney disease and would have needed dialysis if not for the donation. Her new kidney came from a co-worker."I was so fortunate," says says. "Someone gave me the most amazing gift."It's a gift her family knows well. Marlin's husband, Fred Kolkhorst, had a heart transplant just 18 months ago after being diagnoses with heart failure."It changes you immensely in ways that are difficult to describe," he says.Kolkhorst and Marlin are rare in that they're a married couple who have both received donated organs. Sharp Memorial Hospital Transplant Coordinator Tammy Wright says she can't think of any couples in her 25 years in the field.Wright says the holidays are the perfect time for families to talk about their wishes in regards to organ donations."It's a time of giving," she says. "The simple thing is to tell your family what your wishes are. If they know what your wishes are, they usually will follow that if something does happen."Wright also says to consider being a living donor for organs like kidneys, which have an 8-12 year wait list for donors."The simple act of saying 'yes' can make somebody live," she says.More information on organ donation can be found here. 1520

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The gradual reopening of San Diego beaches continues the week of June 8. Parking lots are next on the list to reopen.Starting Monday, June 8, park and water use are open at East and West Mission Bay Parks with no restrictions. Mission Bay parking lots are open. Fiesta Island is open to pedestrians, dogs and cyclists as of June 8 but will not open for cars until July 6.Starting Tuesday, June 9, all San Diego piers and boardwalks are open. Plus, San Diego beach parking lots are open with no restrictions.Friday, June 12, Balboa Park Central Mesa opens, along with Balboa Park parking lots.While beaches are officially open for both active and passive activities, social distancing should still be practiced, meaning people should only sit near people who they live with. Sporting activities like football and volleyball are not allowed on beaches yet.There are nine permanent lifeguard stations in the San Diego Area, including Ocean Beach, South Mission Beach, Mission Beach, North Pacific Beach, Pacific Beach, Children's Pool, La Jolla Cove, La Jolla Shores and Black's Beach. 1117

SAN DIEO (KGTV) - Parole agents checked on child sex offenders Thursday night to ensure they were in compliance, as part of the 26th Annual Operation Boo.10News rode along with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Agents who went knocking on 7 doors Halloween night."The gates were closed, the lights were turned off, they kind of know what is expected of them," Parole Agent Matthew Holmes said.Some of the stops took us to National City, City Heights, even a marina where a house boat was docked."Most of the time they're compliant, occasionally somebody has to go back to jail, but we just try to hold them accountable for their conditions," Holmes said.That means no alcohol, drugs, weapons, or pornography.Thursday night everyone checked out.One parolee told 10News he's excited to take the next step after his release, "I feel fantastic, the program is great, State Parole is great. It's definitely worth it. I think all this tax payers expense, they're getting their money's worth, I'll tell you that."Operation Boo is just a small part of agents' role of checking in on parolees. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A group of San Diegans gathered at Balboa Park to honor the 22 lives lost in the El Paso shooting. A group of San Diegans organized the event held at the park next to Centro Cultural de la Raza, hoping to unite the city and advocate change."It hurts, it's going to take a while, we're not going to forget," Pat Palma said. She has friends and family in Texas and feared for their safety when the shots rang out August 3rd."Tried to locate everybody, it was hard, I finally did. Sunday I was just numb," she said."That person did not go to Walmart asking if you're a Democrat or a Republican or a Trump supporter or not. He went there to shoot brown people," Organizer Jessica Yanez Perez said.The victims range in age from 82-2-years-old.At the vigil, they held a prayer asking for support for the families experiencing grief, lit candles for those lost and had speakers who preached involvement to create change."This is something that touched close to home for a lot of us," Yanez Perez said El Paso and San Diego are the same city. She explained both cities are made up of the same people, "people of Mexican ethnicity, of immigrants, of people who cross the border to work."The organizers hope the crowd touched by the senseless killing can show unity, through more than the color of their skin, "what happens here, what can we do here, to prevent something like that and I think the biggest thing is coming together as a community reminding each other we are one we are San Diego." 1522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Thousands of homes braced for rotating outages Monday, but the outages were ultimately averted.The California Independent System Operator, which manages high voltage power transmission, had warned San Diego Gas and Electric and other utilities that it was very likely they would be ordered to implement rotating outages Monday.However, the outages were never ordered partly because local residents and businesses heeded the call to cut back on energy usage.SDG&E, which takes its cues from CAISO for rotating outages, says the rolling blackouts are still possible throughout the state if CAISO isn’t able to maintain a balance between energy demand and supply during the heatwave.A Flex Alert is currently in place through Wednesday.
