SAN DIEGO (AP) — The sole suspect in a fatal shooting at a Southern California synagogue pleaded not guilty to federal hate crimes and other charges Tuesday.John T. Earnest entered the plea a week after a grand jury returned a 113-count indictment that largely mirrors a complaint filed shortly after his arrest on April 27. The indictment added four counts of using and carrying a firearm during commission of a violent crime.Earnest's parents attended the brief hearing but did not seem to exchange eye contact with their 19-year-old son. The suspect spoke only once, to acknowledge his name.Two days after the shooting, the family said their son's actions "were informed by people we do not know, and ideas we do not hold.""To our great shame, he is now part of the history of evil that has been perpetrated on Jewish people for centuries," they said in their only public statement since the shooting.Earnest looked blankly ahead as one of his attorneys argued that shackles should be removed from his wrists, ankles and waist during the hearing. SAN DIEGO — Medical workers from all over San Diego made their way into SDCCU Stadium Wednesday to pick up free Personal Protective Equipment for their small and medium sized practices.The workers got free hand sanitizer, N95 masks, surgical masks, gloves and gowns. "It's really hard to find in stores, online, it's all out, everywhere," said Juana Vasquez, medical assistant at La Mesa Family Medical Groups, who was picking up supplies.Volunteers from the San Diego County Medical Society, UCSD Medical School and the Mira Mesa High School football team handed drivers boxes of the gear in the stadium's parking lot. Medical organizations of 50 or fewer are eligible, and more than 500 of them registered for the event. Dr. Holly Yang, a hospice and palliative care specialist at Scripps and president of the San Diego County Medical Society, said larger hospital systems have been able to source the necessary PPE for its staff. For smaller operations, however, it has been a challenge."Everyone wants to take care of patients," Yang said. "We should not in this country have to be afraid for ourselves and our families. We should have the right equipment. It’s completely inexcusable that this far into the pandemic that that is not available and I’m so grateful that we are able to do this for our small practices."The items came available due to Gov. SAN DIEGO — Jason Walters took a job as a Census Field Supervisor because it looked like fun and he needed the money. He never expected to be going out on a limb."I want to get the word out," he says.Walters says he's concerned about Census takers in the field, including his team of 11. His crew is knocking on doors around Mira Mesa to collect data from those who haven't responded to the government survey. Walters says the Census Bureau gave each worker a Ziploc bag with just two cloth masks and a bottle of hand sanitizer, which Walters says is not nearly enough."We would be sending them into harms way with nothing but a piece of cloth over their face," he says.His concern is that when people are home and come to the door, they're less likely to be wearing a mask. He's now pushing for the Census bureau to provide its field workers with plastic face shields - a request he has tried to escalate with no success.The Census Bureau referred ABC-10 to a recent joint statement with the CDC. It says Census takers are trained to wear face masks, maintain six feet of social distance, practice hand hygiene, and not enter homes to do interviews.Walters says the leadership agreed the plastic face shields would be a benefit, but if Walters wanted to get them for his own crew, he'd need to pay for them out of his own pocket.
