The man behind the American pastime of paint-by-numbers pictures died on April 1 at the age of 93, according to his son. Dan Robbins created the first pictures and helped popularize paint-by-numbers kits in the 1950s.Robbins' son, Larry, said his dad was working as a package designer for the Palmer Paint Company in Detroit when he came up with the idea for paint-by-numbers in the late 1940s. He worked there as a graphic artist and sold children's paint that was washable.The idea for paint-by-numbers started when Robbins' boss asked him to come up with an item that could be geared towards adults. Robbins got inspiration for the product from Leonardo da Vinci. The famous artist would hand out numbered designs to apprentices. Robbins took that concept and evolved it into paint-by-numbers.Robbins' work had a significant impact on the pop culture of the 1950s and '60s, since post-World War II Americans found themselves with leisure time to pursue hobbies and activities such as painting."Dad was a very, very modest person. He would never bring up his career. If someone asked him, he'd explain," Larry Robbins said. "Dad was into the accomplishment of providing ... for people like me who can't draw a stick man, to be able to paint and the experiencing of creating a nice piece of art work."Before computers were involved, the artists creating the pictures had to paint the image and then use a piece of acetate or clear plastic over the original to create the areas for each number. Beginner kits started with 20 colors and the number of colors increased with the level of difficulty.Robbins' son said that his father didn't get rich from his invention. Dan Robbins didn't own the company, and eventually his product's parent company, Craft Master, was bought by General Mills.Robbins ended up in the Chicago area and did his own consulting work. He did art work, packaging, and new product development until he retired in the 1980s, according to his son.His work is still on display in the Detroit Historical Museum, along with works from the likes of Henry Ford.Dan Robbins died in Toledo, Ohio, after contracting pneumonia following a series of falls, according to his son. The FDA has also warned that all antibody tests can produce false results, and that “broad use of the tests, when not appropriately informed by other relevant information, such as clinical history or diagnostic test results, could identify too many false-positive individuals.” 1286

The city of El Paso, Texas is trying to find ways to heal following a mass shooting that killed 22 members of the close-knit community.Everyone is looking for ways to help the grieving community. One aspiring political cartoonist is evening putting politics aside and is doing his part to bring the community together.“It’s just so sad to see something so tragic happen in our city,” says Michael Nunez, an artist from El Paso. Nunez is using his grief to create what he knows best. “It’s not so much that I don’t have emotion,” he says. “It’s that it’s contained, and it has to come out some way and it always out in art.” Nunez began drawing. “Once I knew everyone was OK that I knew, immediate family, I just started drawing,” he says. “The first thing that came to my head was the amigo man crying, but then it grew into two other people the mascots.” He says the artwork represents the El Paso people.“It shows the community coming together, not just one mascot but multiple mascots,” he explains.For Nunez, this cartoon isn’t about politics. “It was emotional. It was a sentiment. It was a concept that I felt captures what we were feeling as a community, coming together and mourning,” he says. The Democrat-led House Ways and Means Committee is suing the Treasury Department, the IRS and their respective leaders, Steve Mnuchin and Charles Rettig, according to the federal court in Washington.House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal is seeking the President's tax returns using a little-known IRS provision known as 6103, which allows the Chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee to request and obtain an individual's tax information for a legitimate legislative purpose.The move comes months after Neal made his initial request for the President's tax information and as outside groups and other liberals on the Ways and Means Committee grew impatient with the pace of Neal's efforts. Neal initially made his request for Trump's tax returns on April 3. After a series of follow-up letters, the Treasury Department formally denied the request at the beginning of May, and Neal issued subpoenas to the IRS and Treasury Department on May 10.Democrats had argued that under 6103 authority, Neal did not need to issue a subpoena, but internal deliberations with House Counsel got Neal to the point where the advice was that a subpoena could bolster the case in court.
