STOCKHOLM, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Swedish Parliament Speaker Per Westerberg on Sunday said that with the rapid economic development, China has played an increasingly important role in international and regional issues over the past years."Sweden is willing to further broaden and deepen cooperation with China in bio-pharmaceutical, energy and environmental protection fields, strengthen governmental, parliamentary and people's exchange between the two countries and promote sustainable development of bilateral relations," Westerberg said in a meeting with Liu Qi, a Chinese party official.Liu, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, arrived in Stockholm on Friday for a three-day visit.Swedish Parliament Speaker Per Westerberg (L) meets with Liu Qi (R), a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chief of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, in Trosa, Sweden, Sept. 12, 2010.Over the past 60 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, bilateral exchange and cooperation in trade, education and tourism have been increasing and benefited both sides, Westerberg said.During the meeting, Liu said that with the frequent bilateral visits of high-level leaders, political trust in both sides have been strengthened."Bilateral cooperation in traditional fields have been fruitful while the cooperation in energy-saving, environmental protection and ecological city construction has been expanding," Liu said.He said China is willing to strengthen exchange and communication with Sweden and take the 60th anniversary as an opportunity to further tap the potential of cooperation and promote further development of bilateral relations.Liu also met Carl Bildt, Swedish minister of foreign affairs, and attended a signing ceremony between Beijing Economic and Information Committee and Ericsson for strategic cooperation.Liu came from Oslo before he arrived in Stockholm. BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) - China's gross domestic product (GDP) will grow about 9 percent next year, but the economy will be challenged by rising labor costs, liquidity problems and difficulty in sustaining rapid growth in the long run, a senior researcher at the country's top think-tank said Saturday.Liu Shijin, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, or China's Cabinet, spoke at the OTO Fortune Forum held by the Bank of Communications. As for the year 2010, Liu predicted an annual 10-percent GDP growth due to the economic slowdown in China during the second half of the year.He said China's exports and investments would be much better in 2011 than this year, but the growth rate of consumption would pull back slightly from this year's boom, making 9 percent growth "very likely".To keep its economy on track for sustained growth, however, China still faces three major challenges in the long term, according to Liu's research."The first challenge comes from the rapid rise of labor costs in the country," Liu said, warning: "The competitiveness of Chinese companies will be threatened by rising labor costs unless they find a new source of growth, such as innovation."The second challenge is from liquidity as China's currency, the renminbi, and other non-U.S. dollar currencies are under forced appreciation pressure following the Federal Reserve's considering a new round of quantitative easing of the monetary policy, he said. The greenback, which serves as the world's reserve currency, tumbled against most major currencies this week on expected easing move by the Federal Reserve to pump more money into the U.S. economy next month.Meanwhile, China's economic stimulus package also injected excessive liquidity into the market, pushing up prices of commodities, equities and other land-related assets or resources, he added. The third major challenge concerns whether China can maintain its quick economic expansion in the future, he said.According to Liu's forecast, in the next three to five years China's GDP growth will slow to a moderate speed of around 7 percent from its current 10 percent."Actually, we don't have to be too worried about an economy with moderate expansion," he said, "because the current economic growth is too high for China."

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's financial sector should better serve the transformation of economic growth pattern in the country while keeping high alert on possible risks, Vice Premier Wang Qishan said Friday.Wang said the financial sector should give full play to monetary policies and continue to optimize lending structures to boost weak points like agricultural sectors, small enterprises and innovation.Lending to sectors with excessive energy consumption, high emission of pollutants, or with overcapacity, must be strictly limited, he told a group of provincial or ministerial-level officials who attended a training seminar in Beijing. The seminar closing on Friday focused on how to promote the reform of financial sector in China while guarding against financial risks, which Wang said was highly necessary considering current situation.Wang urged officials at various levels to continually learn to upgrade their knowledge and working abilities in the financial sector. As China's financial sector was still in an initial growth phase, it should unswervingly boost reforms and its opening-up, promote mechanism innovation and complete the development of the financial market system, he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety supervisor will soon launch a nationwide inspection campaign on coal mines to crack down on illegal mining and prevent deadly accidents.A spokesman of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) said Sunday the campaign, which starts on Oct. 10 and lasts until Nov. 30, will check whether accident-prone small coal mines of outdated capacity have been shut down according to state policies.Technological upgrades, merger and acquisition of coal mines will also be examined during the campaign, the spokesman said.According to the SAWS, 1,539 small coal mines of outdated capacity have to be closed in China this year to meet the country's carbon dioxide emission and pollution-reduction requirements.China's annual fatalities at coal mines had dropped from a peak of 6,995 deaths in 2002 to 2,631 in 2009, according to data from the SAWS.Six people were killed and 12 were injured in a coal mine gas outburst Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said. The accident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday in Xinglong Coal Mine in Tongzi County, Zunyi City of Guizhou, said the spokesman.Thirty-five people were working in the mine when the accident happened. Twenty-two people escaped, and another 12 were rescued. One worker missing was later found dead in the mine, and five died when being taken to hospital.
