CLEVELAND, Ohio. – Following shootings inside houses of worship around the world, many churches are reconsidering their security measures. “We celebrate our love for Christ and our love for each other,” said Senior Pastor Kregg Burris at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland Ohio. Instead of just focusing on the message of faith, pastors like Kregg are now having to put more thought into keeping their congregation safe during services. “There's the old sense that I’m going to trust God,” he said. “Then there’s the realism of, well in the world we live in where people don’t recognize and understand the sacredness of the space.” He said the congregation has had to take steps in order to try and protect their people, but do it in a respectful manner. Just over a year ago, the security team was formed. “We just live in a world where reality exists that some people have a different world view than we have,” said Monroe Goins, a member of the church and part of the security team, who has almost three decades of law enforcement experience. From using walkie talkie to installing security cameras and new door systems, First Baptist of Greater Cleveland has implemented a number of safety measures since 2018. “I believe churches should have a plan in place,” he said. Following attacks at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, a mosque in New Zealand, and multiple houses of worship in Texas, Goins said he has seen an increase in violence. Now, the state of Ohio is taking a hands on approach. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency announced they now have a toolkit to help, available to download for free. “We’ve seen across the country the incidents,” said Tom Stickrath, the Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. “And how tragic they can be.” The toolkit provides presentations, planning documents, and case studies for churches.“It’s a tool people can choose to use,” Stickrath said. “It’s been downloaded more than 600 times by organizations in 29 states.” That was only a week after the toolkit was released.“It provided scenario-based tabletop exercises,” Goins said. The toolkit came out shortly after the church shooting in White Settlement, Texas. Two people died before the gunman was taken down. But not everyone is on board with the idea of the toolkit. “This is not something we could endorse or recommend to churches,” said Kristine Eggert, a former pastor and the Executive Director of gun violence organization God Before Guns. “For there to be a toolkit about gun violence in a church that is not taking into account anything about peoples theology, about what people believe, and about what church is.” She said there are other ways to keep each other safe.“Among talking to other pastors, as they’re looking at preparing their budgets more money is earmarked for security,” Pastor Burris said. In the event of an active shooter situation, one of the biggest factors is time. “It’s very rare the police arrive in time for a rapid mass murder,” said Ron Borsch, a former law officer who has been studies these situations for decades. “So, the simple solution is having armed and trained on site good guys.” “The security officer without a gun is a victim,” he said.“How do we maintain an open welcome environment,” Goins said. “But yet be responsible for keeping people safe.” 3338

Prosecutors have charged a 17-year-old from Illinois in the fatal shooting of two protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the wounding of a third. Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley filed the charges against Kyle Rittenhouse Thursday afternoon. The charges include one count of first-degree intentional homicide; one count of first-degree reckless homicide; one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide; two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment. All those charges are felonies. He could face a mandatory life sentence if convicted of first-degree intentional homicide, the most serious crime in Wisconsin. A photo of 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse posted on Tik Tok (Kyle Rittenhouse/ Tik Tok) Rittenhouse was arrested in Antioch, Illinois Wednesday and charged with first-degree intentional homicide. He turned himself in at the Antioch police headquarters, according to police. Prosecutors say Rittenhouse opened fire with a long gun on a crowd of protesters Tuesday night near Civic Center Park in Kenosha. One victim was injured and is recovering in the hospital. The other two were pronounced dead from bullet wounds.Rittenhouse remains in custody of the Lake County Judicial System awaiting extradition to Wisconsin.Shortly before midnight Tuesday, cell phone video from Twitter user ‘LivesMatterShow’ captured the gunfire that erupted in a car lot near 63rd and Sheridan. Jhalin Goodlow said he witnessed the shooting while working security across the street.“Once I heard gunshots, I booked it because I wasn’t armed,” he said. “I didn’t have no protection.”While Goodlow was taking cover, he heard more shots on the street in front of him.Cell phone video that was posted to social media by ‘BGOnTheScene’ shows a man who was armed with a rifle get up off the ground and shoot two people less than 10 feet away from him.“This not the action of those I believe who set out to do protests, it is the people who were involved after the legal timing involved in illegal activity that brought violence to this community,” Kenosha Police Chief Miskinis said on Wednesday.Law enforced officials were questioned Wednesday about the events that occurred after the shooting. Cell phone video shows the gunman walked over to officers with his hands in the air. Police are seen in the video moving past him to tend to the victims.“There’s screaming, there’s hollering, there’s a squad car running there’s bearcats idling and if the officer happened to be in the car, the radio traffic was nonstop,” explained Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth.Kenosha County Sheriff Beth believes the suspect was with a group of armed people who claimed to have come to Kenosha to protect businesses and homes from looting and fires. Mayor John Antaramian said their presence isn’t wanted in Kenosha.“I don’t need more guns on the street in the community when we are trying to keep people safe,” he said. “Law enforcement is trained. They’re the ones responsible.Chief Miskinis said a 36-year-old person from Kenosha and a 26-year-old person from Silver Lake died in the shooting. Their names haven’t been officially released. This article was written by WTMJ.The Associated Press contributed to this report. 3268

As important developmental milestones are reached over the next few months, Bea and her calf will soon join the herd on the park’s Serengeti Plain where they can be spotted by guests.WFTS' Zack Perry was the first to report this story. 544

BALTIMORE, Md. – In looking for creative inspiration, engineering student Qiyuan Fu finds it in a box, with an interesting occupant. Inside: a real, live snake. “We can definitely learn something from them,” Fu said. The snake is a Kingsnake, which is native to deserts in California and Mexico and serves as the model for a new robot, developed in a mechanical engineering lab at Johns Hopkins University. “We added this one directional wheel, so it can only rotate in one direction,” said Fu, as he demonstrated how the robot moves. The “snake robot,” and its colleague, the “roach robot,” are so-called “bio-inspired robots” – taking their cues from mother nature. “We studied snakes here because they are exceptionally good at moving through almost any terrain,” said Johns Hopkins assistant professor Chen Li. Li said it’s an idea with practical applications: the robots could potentially help in search and rescue, by making their way through tight spaces to find people trapped in rubble. “People have actually tried to build snake robots for several decades,” he said. In the past, though, the robots fell short once they left the lab environments, unable to make it through different types of terrain. This time – using specially positioned cameras – they’ve observed how the snakes and roaches move across different surfaces and attempted to mimic what nature already does so well. “What's really unique about our work is that we focus on understanding the physical principles – starting by looking at animals,” Li said. “And then by understanding such principles, we can apply them to the to the robot.” The snakes have 200 vertebrae; the snake robot has 20 segments. It’s progress, these engineers say, with more to go. “There’s still going to be a lot of challenges ahead,” Li said. The engineering lab is now looking into modeling robots based on lizards. That’s because of their ability to leap across surfaces, which could further help robots make their way across uneven terrain. 2008
