As many NFL fans question the patriotism of kneeling NFL players, the spotlight is now turning to the fans themselves. The Green Bay Packers handed out small American Flags during the Packers-Lions Monday Night Game, as part of the NFL's Salute to Service Military Campaign. "During the National Anthem, everybody was waving (their flags) and singing," Marine veteran Tegan Griffith told WTMJ.  "It made me feel very good."However, by halftime, Griffith says she and her fellow veterans noticed many of the flags were discarded."We started noticing people leaving (flags) on the ground, next to food wrappers and beer cups," Griffith explained.  "We found a couple on the bathroom floor.  The veterans I was with started to get a little upset."After the game, the flags were seen everywhere."It looked like red, white, and blue confetti," described Phil Olson, a season ticker holder.  "People were walking all over them.  It struck me as unpatriotic."After the game, both Olson and Griffith told WTMJ they spotted several fans picking up the extra flags."I'm going to tell the Packers they they shouldn't hand out flags because it's the wrong venue," Olson said. "Every game, the Packers will give out a souvenir with the Packers logo on it.  Everybody takes the (souvenir) home.  But after this game, hardly anybody wanted the American flag."The Packers released a statement on the matter:"We distributed more than 77,000 United States flags as part of the Salute to Service theme of the game. They think the chunk of rock has been swirling near earth for awhile.“It’s probably been crossing the Earth’s path countless times, until its time was up in 2020,” Robert Lunsford, fireball report coordinator for the American Meteor Society, told Syracuse.com. “The chance of a collision is infinitesimal, but if you do it several million times, it finally happens.”Apparently the time to finally happen was around noon on Wednesday, December 2. Thousands of people reported seeing a bright streak of light lasting a few seconds, and thousands more heard the deafening boom.Reports came in from several states, including Ohio, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania,Virginia, as well as parts of Toronto, Ontario and southeast Canada, according to the American Meteor Society.It’s not unusual for meteors to enter Earth’s atmosphere or make it to the ground, however this one was rare because it happened in a very populated area.NASA’s analysis of the event shows the meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere over upper New York, roughly between Rochester and Syracuse traveling roughly 56,000 mph. Which is slow by meteor standards.It then broke into pieces roughly 22 miles in the air, which produced the bright flash of light and loud sonic boom.NASA estimates the meteor was roughly three feet across and weighed about 1,800 pounds when it entered the atmosphere.NASA reportedly has three meteor-tracking cameras in Ohio and western Pennsylvania that could have precisely tracked this event, but they were off at the time because of the time of day.“Meteor cameras don’t turn on until night because they’re too sensitive to the sun,” explained Bill Cooke, who tracks meteors for NASA. 1966

Amid the political gridlock in Washington, it’s one of the rare instances of a bill getting marshaled forward in a bipartisan fashion.It’s called “The Crisis Stabilization and Community Reentry Act of 2020,” which recently passed the U.S. Senate. At its core, it would help provide mental health services for people in the criminal justice system who don’t usually get it.“It tries to deal with a fundamental problem we have in this country, that too many people with mental illness end up in jails and prisons,” said Chuck Ingoglia, CEO of the National Council for Behavioral Health. “I've had the opportunity to go around the country and to talk to local sheriffs and they understand that people with mental illness don't belong in their facilities, don’t do well in their facilities.”In fact, from 2006 to 2016, in jails around the country, suicide was the leading single cause of death. Yet, the problem goes beyond prison walls.It can be a lonely road for inmates after they have served their time and are released back into the community. Part of what the bill hopes to address is what happens with their mental health since many of them report they don’t have health insurance to get their needed medication.About 80 percent of inmates released lack health insurance, and those that do have it, often wait an average of 48 days to get an appointment at a behavioral clinic.To fill in that gap, among other things, the bill would allocate million a year for five years towards programs that strengthen the link between law enforcement and community mental health providers.“Unfortunately, in many places, there is no alternative,” Ingoglia said. “This bill, these new grant programs that it's seeking to create, would try to give more options to communities.”It’s a bill whose future now lies in the hands of the U.S. House of Representatives. 1861
