GLEN ALLEN, Va. — A Glen Allen, Virginia, family warned others to take COVID-19 seriously during the holidays after their parents died from the virus less than three weeks apart.Keene and Jessie Mendenhall said their entire family contracted COVID-19 in September after they traveled to Alabama to attend their grandmother’s funeral."Hindsight is 20/20, but going there and traveling I think was a mistake," Keene Mendenhall said. The siblings believe they were exposed to the virus at a gathering inside of a home following the funeral.“We got a little too comfortable around people,” Keene explained. “All four us got symptoms that were telling of COVID-19.” Their parents, Ed and Jane, were admitted to the hospital shortly after returning to Henrico. They said their father was reluctant to go to the hospital, but ended up calling an ambulance.“He looked at us and smiled and gave us a thumbs up and that’s the last memory I have of dad,” the siblings recalled. “At the time I didn’t know of course it was going to be the last time I saw him or that goofy smile.”Ed Mendenhall, 63, died on October 8 at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital. His 66-year-old wife Jane died 20 days later at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville.“They were hard workers. Caring people. Always helped somebody in a time of need,” the siblings described. “Mom and dad both always put in extra work to make sure we had what we needed.”Ed taught music at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, and the University of Virginia. He was last employed with Virginia ABC.Jane served for more than 30 years with the Refugee and Immigration Services Department of Commonwealth Catholic Charities, helping settle families from Vietnam and Cambodia into the Greater Richmond area. She then became a Developmental Disabilities Waiver Specialist for children on the autism spectrum.“This is a tragic situation. It’s not just us. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — There is a group of retired ladies living in a Pinellas County RV park who have formed their own assembly line when it comes to making masks.They call themselves the Crafty Ladies of Sherwood Forrest RV Resort. They are making hundreds of masks a week, and because the bulk of them go to our veterans, patriotism is a big deal.The red, white and blue runs deep not just in their fabric but their spirit.“I feel helpless with what’s going on with the Covid and this is my tiny little way of contributing,” said Micheal Barsi.Barsi is one of more than a dozen residents who are part of the group. Most of them have two main things in common, they are skilled with a sewing machine and are part of a military family.For the past six years, the Crafty Ladies have been making quilts for the Service Source organization, Veterans Mall. However, when the pandemic hit, they shifted their needle and thread to make masks for veterans.“They had to sacrifice and people who had to sacrifice I want to help as much as I can,” said Nancy Barandon.The Crafty Ladies said the best part is the camaraderie, working together on a project that could save lives.“It does make us feel good to see people using them,” said Jeannie Powell. Lending a helping hand is what Stephen Peth loves to do. Peth spends a lot of his time in the rehabilitation unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, helping wounded warriors get back on their feet. "The job is basically to do whatever we can to help the therapist," Peth explains. At 72 years old, Peth couldn't imagine any other way to spend his time. “I could be out on a golf course doing something for me, but to be here and be working for these wonderful service people that are here for a variety of reasons, to me, that’s inspirational,” he says. Peth says he’s inspired by all the patients he sees, because, he too, was once a warrior wounded in combat. "This is the boot that I was wearing the day that I got shot," he says. In 1967, 11 months into his tour during the Vietnam War, Peth, an army rescue helicopter pilot, was attacked by gunfire. "We took 39 hits on the aircraft,” he recalls. “I took a round through my boot and took a round though my arm." That dangerous mission earned him one of the highest awards of valor. "Gen. Craton Abrams came out and pinned a Silver Star on me," he says.His award and scars serve as reminders that he was once where these war heroes are now, compelling him find a way to serve his country once more. 1305
