SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A stretch of Harbor Drive near San Diego International Airport was shut down after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.The single-vehicle crash was reported just after 11 a.m. on northbound Harbor Drive, about a mile from the airport’s Terminal 1.ABC 10News learned a blue car traveling at a high rate of speed on the southbound side struck an object, lost control and then crossed the median onto the northbound lanes before coming to rest.The driver was declared dead at the scene.Due to the wreck, authorities were forced to close off at least one lane on northbound Harbor Drive, creating a lengthy backup for motorists heading towards the airport. 676

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After getting approved by voters, San Diego State is moving forward with its SDSU Mission Valley Plan. As they are still working out the finishing touches, community members are offering their suggestions to organizers. SDSU Mission Valley still calls for a stadium, housing for students and the public, retail space, offices and a river park. Local land use and design professionals met in Balboa Park this morning to offer their ideas on how to enhance and improve the existing plans."They want to make sure that this very large development... isn't like an island in the middle of Mission Valley," says Cary Lowe, with C3 San Diego. Community members want to ensure the project "connects fluidly with the surrounding community."There are other concerns, as well. Once construction begins, crews may have to remediate a gas plume that once sat under the site."A number of people have raised the issue of the subsurface contamination of the site," says Lowe. This has "been a long time issue because of a leak from fuel tanks in Murphy Canyon."Lowe says there is an elaborate plan for the possible contamination removal. But as negotiations continue, it is unclear if the city or university will be paying for it. Land use and design professionals estimate the project to begin towards the beginning of next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An inmate at R.J. Donovan State Prison has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.Anand Jon Alexander filed the complaint on Monday, alleging prison officials failed to keep him safe and to provide adequate medical care after he was assaulted behind bars.In the complaint, Alexander claims he was attacked by another inmate while waiting to make a phone call on May 18, 2019. He was allegedly stabbed multiple times in the face and kicked on the ground.After the attack he sustained “five facial fractures, a lower orbital floor blowout, sinus and nasal fractures, a deviated septum, a 50% abrasion to the right cornea, long term impairment of his vision and respiration, serious nerve damage, PTSD” according to the complaint.Alexander is 12 years in to a 59 year sentence after he was convicted of rape in 2008.An up and coming fashion designer, Alexander had been featured on “America’s Next Top Model” and was listed in Newsweek’s “Who’s Next in 2007.”But his career was put on hold after being accused by multiple women of sexual assault.Many of the charges were dropped, but he was convicted on one count of rape and 15 other counts following a trial in Los Angeles. The jury found him not guilty or were hung on several other counts.Alexander has maintained his innocence. In the complaint, his lawyer writes he “has acknowledged the existence of blurred lines between his personal and professional relationships…Nevertheless, he holds steadfast to his innocence.”The American Justice Alliance, a group which seeks to free prisoners who have been wrongfully convicted, submitted an amicus brief to the Federal Central District Court.In it, they wrote Alexander “was targeted by a collusion of disgruntled business associates and some former girlfriends, who have admitted they were out to “bring him down,” and “get revenge,” seeking notoriety and monetary benefits. He was then subject to a prosecution and trial riddled with extraordinary police misconduct.”The lawsuit names CDCR as well as Marcus Pollard, the Warden of R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility and Daniel Paramo, the former Warden.It alleges prison officials failed to protect Alexander from harm and after he was injured gave “deliberate indifference to Mr. Alexander’s medical condition.”They are seeking unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.So far, no criminal charges have been filed against the assailant. 10News reached out to CDCR for comment but had not heard back before the story was published. 2557

Five months later, the entrepreneurs say they are thriving, thanks to their expansion into a chicken coop.Starting a business takes guts. Starting a business during a global pandemic is extremely risky."We built our business around the idea of lockdown and quarantine," IvyMay & Co. co-owner Cody Warden said.RELATED: San Diego couple launches new business during COVID-19 pandemicWarden and girlfriend, Tammy Nguyen, thought if people cannot be outside, they would bring the outdoors to them. That inspired the creation of IvyMay & Co., an online houseplant curating and delivery company.In July, Warden was newly jobless, and Nguyen was working her corporate PR job when they started the company. Since then, Nguyen quit her job, and their business blossomed. They went from having twenty deliveries to now more than 120 in a week. They hired more staff and outgrew their space almost immediately."We needed to figure out a spatial solution so that we can continue to grow," Nguyen said.Their solution was Warden's father's backyard in Encinitas, specifically their chicken coop. Warden and his father renovated the 300 square foot space to have a greenhouse and an office. It is not your typical warehouse, but they say it is perfect."It's like working with what you have and being able to pivot and do whatever it takes to take your business to the next step," Nguyen said.They say it is this kind of ingenuity, a loving family, and loyal customers that keep them focused. Whether they expand to delivery to other counties or build a storefront, only time will tell. But pandemic or not, they plan to stick around."We may not know where we're going to be in six months, but I can guarantee you that we will be around for you to talk to us in six months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego-based biotech company appears to be making huge strides with its experimental COVID-19 vaccine after testing it on monkeys.Inovio Pharmaceuticals is one of more than 100 companies working on a vaccine. It’s one of few to make it to human clinical trials.“We’re much closer to finding a safe and effective vaccine,” said Dr. Kate Broderick, the VP of Research and Development for Inovio. “We’re so excited and feel so confident about the results we’ve got both in animals and our human clinical trials.”Broderick said clinical trials had shown positive results regarding the safety of Inovio’s experimental vaccine.“Our phase one has been our U.S. based trial, and we’re about to start a trial in China,” she said. “We really are looking to test the vaccine all over the world. The immune responses that these people have generated after getting the vaccine, we’re so pleased with those because they’re really broad.”She said the latest positive development came from testing the vaccine on monkeys in what’s called an Animal Challenge Study.“Those monkeys received their vaccine, then just after four months later they received the virus itself, we were able to show they were protected from that,” she said. “What we were able to show in the lungs, and the nose is that those monkeys really were protected from the symptoms of COVID-19.”It will take some time to ensure all testing is done correctly, and the potential vaccine is safe before it is given to the general public.“Realistically we should be looking at a vaccine being available for certain members of the public at the end of 2021,” she said. “Most vaccines historically take 5 to 10 years to be generated and developed; this is really a short time frame.”Broderick, a busy working mom with two young kids at home, hopes the positive results will ease the minds of those anxiously waiting to get back to normal.“I do just want to let you know there is light at the end of the tunnel; there is hope out there,” she said. “Our vaccine is looking very promising there’s other vaccines out there that are looking very good.” 2123
