Flowers are placed in bullet holes and candles line the street near the scene of a deadly mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.“Once he unloaded a couple of times you could hear the police come in with their shots too,” Dayton local Mike Hoover said.Hoover is talking about the chaos after a man opened fire in a popular downtown entertainment district.“It’s home; it could have been me,” Hoover said, while wiping away tears. For some, tears have turned into rage.“We’re really pissed off to be quite frank about it,” said Ohio Congressman and Presidential candidate Tim Ryan.Congressman Ryan voiced his frustration, while calling for changes to gun control.“We’re not going to stand for anything less, and I think the president is pushing some reform that he wants to tie to immigration, which I think is complete bullsh**,” he said. Some locals are leaving politics out of this, rather focusing on helping their community heal.“Born and raised here,” said DeQuinn Talley. “I love this community, man. It’s where my heart is.”Talley of Duck’s Donuts loves Dayton so much that he got a tattoo to represent his hometown. Less than two days after the shooting, he’s giving in a time of need. “We’re going to take some donuts over to the local hospitals, to the nurses and doctors, who have over seen these victims,” he said. Not all victims, however, were hurt physically. Mark Hellier says this tragedy has wounded him emotionally.“I don’t know any other way to describe it than a terrorist attack,” he said. “This was everybody’s safe place down here.”Hellier says his safe space has been violated and that he’s now looking to move on and away from where the shooting happened.“It’s a constant reminder every time that I come downstairs I see where there was a dead body there,” he said. 1790

From Italian ice to frozen custard, the Everetts family has been in the frozen dessert business for 25 years. Business has always been booming at the local hot spot, which is managed by Al Everetts and his son, Troy. But it was Troy's interest in the cannabis business that sparked an idea to grow their reach.“I was in the dispensary and I saw 20 grams of this, 20 grams of chocolate bars, and I was like, 'There's no frozen products,’" Troy Everetts says. Troy saw products containing cannabidiol (CBD), an active ingredient in cannabis derived from hemp plants. It's used to help treat anxiety, chronic pain and neurological disorders like epilepsy. As an oil from the cannabis plant, it usually only contains trace amounts of THC, but not nearly enough to get you high. So why not put CBD in their homemade Italian ice? Well, easier said than done. CBD oil isn't water soluble. "It's really hard, because it likes to float to the top and so it's really hard to get it mixed through the ice," says Marissa Foersch with Primal, a smoke and vape shop in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. CBD connoisseurs say there has to be some sort of fat in the product for the CBD to hold onto. "That's why a lot of people use coconut oil or ice cream and stuff like that," Al says. When the Everetts family pitched the idea of using Italian ice, there was a bit of skepticism among cannabis companies. "They were questioning us. They said, 'I don't think you're going to get the oil in the Italian ice in the water. You won't do it in a non-dairy product,’" Al recalls. But Al was up for the challenge. He spent a month using his Italian ice expertise to find a solution. The end product is 30 milligrams of CBD mixed into a cup of flavored ice. Flavors include lemon, cherry and mango. However, the process is under wraps. Right now, the father and son duo are working to move into a bigger facility across town to help meet the demand for their Mt. Everetts Frozen Creations products. "We had to expand from our little ice cream shop in the back to this, so it's amazing how we're growing," Al says.Al says the extra fridge space will soon be necessary as they're starting to hear from people all over the country. CBD stores in South Carolina, Florida, New York and Alaska are already on the list. But until then, they're focused on supplying the northeast."We're excited about it," Al says. "The response has been unbelievable."Their biggest fans are people who have relied on CBD for medical purposes. The Everetts' say that alone makes the hard work worth it."The other day there was an older man who said, 'I was in a lot of back pain' and he ate one, and he said his back wasn't hurting him anymore," Troy says. "And when we hear stuff like that, it's always awesome to hear that our product is helping someone." 2815

dequate. The NAACP wanted the judge to compel the bureau to hire more census takers in the field and open more field offices in hard to count communities.“Plaintiffs have not demonstrated that if the census proceeds as planned, there will be a differential undercount of the magnitude they fear, or if I were to order the funds spent as they want, the 2020 census would not produce an equal or worst undercount for hard-to-count communities,” U.S. District Judge Paul Grimm wrote.___Schneider reported from Orlando, Florida. If inventor Reuben Brewer’s prototype goes mainstream, we may all be pulled over by robotic police officers one day.Brewer’s invention called the GoBetween is essentially a robotic arm attached to the front driver’s side of his vehicle—acting as a police cruiser—and would extend forward toward the driver side window of a car that an officer has pulled over. On the other end of the arm is a module complete with audio and visual chat screen so the officer and driver can communicate. “It’s essentially FaceTime on a stick,” Brewer jokes. The device scans for a driver’s license and registration. It can even print out the ticket.“The overarching idea is a robot that goes between the police car and a motorist’s car, so the officer doesn’t physically have to go up to the motorist’s window,” Brewer says.Brewer says he’d seen too many headlines about police stops turning deadly, most notably the death of Minnesota driver Philando Castile in 2016.“For years. it had been story after story on the news about people being shot by police during traffic stops and vice versa,” Brewer says, describing the impetus for the invention. “If you can keep the person out of harm’s way and send a robot, that would be a win.”The robot, of course, wouldn’t be making arrests, but simple traffic violations could be issued, including a printed physical ticket. That would all happen from the module positioned next to the driver’s window.Critics have said this does nothing to solve the fraught relationship between the public and the police, and that this device, if picked up by police departments, would merely be a Band-Aid solution. Brewer wouldn’t disagree.“Every year that you don’t put a Band-Aid on, you’ve got 100 people dead and you’ve got 200,000 people that had physical force or assault used on them,” Brewer says in response. “So, I vote for the Band-Aid now, while other people figure out the solution.”But there is one feature on the GoBetween that’s gotten more chuckles than anything else: the police-style helmet attached to the top of the video chat monitor.“It looks awesome,” Brewer says, laughing. “That’s the only purpose.”Right now, the GoBetween is just a proof-of-concept device, and Brewer is currently working on a second prototype. He hopes that police departments might start picking it up within the next two years. 2349

Felicity Huffman pleaded guilty Monday to paying ,000 to a fake charity that facilitated cheating when her daughter took the SATs.When she appeared in federal court in Boston, prosecutors recommended a sentence of four months prison time for the "Desperate Housewives" TV star for her role in the college admissions scandal. They also suggested a ,000 fine and 12 months of supervised release for the charge, which is a felony. The charity was associated with Rick Singer, who has confessed to helping wealthy parents cheat on standardized tests for their children. Singer also bribed college coaches to falsely designate students as recruited athletes, smoothing their path to admission, a criminal complaint says.Huffman and Singer exchanged emails on how to provide her daughter with extra time to take the SAT exam, the complaint says, and arranged for the girl to take the test in a location controlled by an administrator whom Singer had bribed.Huffman's daughter received an SAT score of 1420 out of a possible 1600 -- about 400 points higher than her Preliminary SAT exam a year earlier.Huffman later discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with Singer, the complaint says.Huffman agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in April. She was among 13 parents who have said they would plead guilty in the scam. Seventeen other parents, including actress Lori Loughlin, submitted not guilty pleas. A federal judge will have the final say on the outcome for Huffman and the other defendants.Huffman arrived at court Monday afternoon accompanied by her brother."I am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, I accept full responsibility for my actions and will accept the consequences that stem from those actions," the actress said in a statement early April."I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community. I want to apologize to them and, especially, I want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly."Huffman's husband, actor William H. Macy, is not charged in the case. 2292
