More studies seem to indicate there is some connection between a person’s severity of COVID-19 symptoms and their blood type. However, experts agree more research is needed and these studies do not allow people with certain blood types to disregard pandemic safety precautions.The two latest studies, one from Denmark and one from Canada, both appear to show that people with blood type O may be slightly less vulnerable to COVID-19 and have a reduced chance of getting severely ill.In the Danish study, researchers looked at more than 7,400 people who tested positive for COVID-19. Of those, 38.4 percent had blood type O, while other research indicates that blood type makes up about 41.7 percent of the population.In the Canadian study, they looked at the length of hospital stays for 95 people critically ill with the coronavirus. They found the portion of patients who needed mechanical ventilation was higher in those with blood type A or AB when compared with a group of patients with blood type O or B.Researchers also found the blood type A or AB group had longer stays in the intensive care unit, a median of 13.5 days, compared to the other group with blood type O or B who had a median of 9 days."I don't think this supersedes other risk factors of severity like age and co-morbities and so forth,” Dr. Mypinder Sekhon, who is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Critical Care Medicine and Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia told CNN."If one is blood group A, you don't need to start panicking. And if you're blood group O, you're not free to go to the pubs and bars."Researchers say this information could be used in some way in regard to treatment of COVID-19. Both studies were published in the journal Blood Advances this week.Previous studies have indicated similar results in patients with blood type O.In July, a study looking at 1,600 patients in Spain and Italy showed slightly higher rates of severe respiratory failure in patients with blood type A compared to those with blood type O.Also this summer, the genealogy website 23andMe.com released data they collected from 750,000 participants who identified they have tested positive for COVID-19.“Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said at the time. 2425

MINNEAPOLIS — A truck driver who drove into a large crowd of protesters on a bridge in Minneapolis following the killing of George Floyd has been charged with two criminal counts.Prosecutors charged 35-year-old Bogdan Vechirko, of Otsego, Minnesota, on Thursday with making threats of violence and criminal vehicular operation.On May 31, Vechirko drove his fuel tanker truck through a crowd of protesters who had shut down a bridge on I-35 in Minneapolis. Even though thousands of pedestrians were on the bridge, Vechirko continued to pull forward.Video from the incident shows that one protester stumbled near the truck, and that's when Vechirko says stopped out of caution. Protesters then attacked him and vandalized his truck.The Star Tribune reports that the charges allege he sought to "scare" protesters out of his path. In addition, the charges also allege a re-enactment with a similar truck showed he would have had plenty of time to stop after seeing the crowd on the highway.Vechirko claimed he was returning from a fuel delivery south of the city and didn't mean to drive through the protests. He also claims that he wouldn't have been able to immediately stop the truck ahead of the crowd without the use of a handbrake that could have caused it to jackknife and cause further injuries. 1308

More than 5,000 people have signed a Change.org petition calling on the state of Tennessee to replace all statues honoring the Confederacy with statues honoring country music legend and native Tennessean Dolly Parton.Parton, a nine-time Grammy winner and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, is also known worldwide for her philanthropy efforts. Following wildfires in the Smokey Mountains, Parton donated millions of dollars to help the community's recovery. She's also touched millions of lives through her charitable foundation.The petition, started by Alex Parsons on June 11, has quickly spread online. It's moving in on its initial goal of 7,500 signatures."Let's replace the statues of men who sought to tear this country apart with a monument to the woman who has worked her entire life to bring us closer together," the petition says.In an update, organizers clarified their stance, saying that "while the idea of replacing all of those monuments with Dolly Parton may seem funny, the history of those monuments is anything but."The petition comes as communities across the country hold conversations about systemic racism in the United States amid several high-profile deaths of black men and women at the hands of police in 2020. NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - Authorities today identified a motorcyclist who was killed in a collision at a South Bay intersection.Andrew Balderas, 21, of San Ysidro, was riding a Yamaha motorcycle eastbound in the 100 block of Mile of Cars Way just before 7 a.m. Thursday when a Toyota minivan made a left turn directly into his path at Transportation Avenue, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Balderas, who was wearing a helmet, struck the minivan and was ejected onto the roadway, according to a Medical Examiner's Office statement.An off-duty emergency medical technician arrived shortly after the collision, called 911 and began performing CPR on Balderas, the Medical Examiner's Office said. When paramedics arrived, Balderas was unresponsive and had no pulse. He was transported to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, but doctors were unable to revive him.The minivan driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, National City police Sgt. Jeffrey Meeks said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the collision, Meeks said. 1090

Months after removing all assault rifles from all 732 of its stores, Dick's Sporting Goods is considering removing all hunting gear from its stores, company CEO Edward Stack said in a conference call, according to CBS News. Stack said on the call that Dick's will test the concept at 10 locations. The 10 locations selected were ones where hunting goods were not selling well. "We'll have to wait and see how the 10-store test does," Stack said on the call. CBS reported that Stack added that there are a number of additional locations where selling hunting goods are difficult. The additional space could be used for Dick's to sell higher-margin items, such as outerwear and clothing for team sports, especially baseball and soccer. CBS reported that Dick's adjusted same-store sales were down 3.9 percent in the third quarter of 2018 compared to 2017. Following Wednesday's announcement, stocks for Dick's rose 2.4 percent, showing that investors welcomed the news.  1026
