(KGTV) — Several storms that have showered California with snow and rain have lifted the state out of drought for the first time since 2011.The U.S. Drought Monitor said Thursday that California was free of drought for the first time since Dec. 20, 2011. The state had seen some form of drought for at least 376 consecutive weeks. As of Thursday, the agency said more than 93 percent of the state was out of drought conditions. RELATED: Devastating 'ARk' storm envisioned for California by U.S. Geological SurveyAmong the areas still seeing "abnormally dry" conditions are a small patch along California's border with Oregon and parts of four Southern California counties, including San Diego County. San Diego County's drought conditions were due to abnormally dry years prior to this winter, according to the agency, and local reservoirs were not at capacity despite the heavy rains."The rest of the region in Southern California is still abnormally dry due to very dry previous years. Reservoirs in San Diego County are only at 65 [percent] capacity. Big Bear Lake was down 18 feet in early March, although expected to continue to rise," the agency says.RELATED: Recent rain not enough to bring San Diego out of droughtLocally, weather is expected to continue warming into next week, after the region saw more rain and snow last weekend. 1347

‘Tis the season to deck the halls! But will you go with a real or fake tree this Christmas? It’s an age-old debate that surfaces every holiday season. When we spoke to tree buyers, there were strong opinions on both sides. You can’t beat the smell of a real tree, but there are several reasons many opt to purchase a fake one.If you don’t continue to water your real tree, it will dry out, making it a fire hazard.A recent study done by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach found that thousands of insects and spiders could be hiding out in your Christmas tree.If you’re worried cutting down a real tree is bad for the environment, that myth is false. Research by Michigan University says to think of the trees like lettuce or corn; they are crops grown on a farm and are grown to be cut down. But as for the artificial Christmas tree, they are extremely cost effective. You can use them year after year. And if you’re worried that artificial trees are toxic because many of them are made from PVC plastic, well, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says there’s nothing to worry about. However, some tree buyers say the little lead found in the tree is still enough for them to stick with a real tree.Ultimately, the choice is left with families to decide what gets them in the holiday spirit. 1313

(KGTV) — San Diego's airport is considered the best in the nation, according to a recent study released by travel website The Points Guy.San Diego International Airport took the top spot on the website's annual "Best and Worst US Airports" analysis of the 50 busiest airports in America. Looking at delay times, commute, and amenities, the website considered San Diego the best thanks to its, "healthy dose of amenities, superior record of on-time flights and incredibly convenient location."San Diego Airport's 30-plus dining options, including favorites like Stone Brewing, Pannikin Coffee & Tea, and Phil's BBQ, boosted the location past last year's winner, Phoenix Sky Harbor, which was hit with a runway closing between January and February last year.RELATED: UC San Diego ranks among the best universities in the U.S., worldAccording to the FAA's latest data from 2017, San Diego International's average gate arrival delay was 3.7 minutes over an average of 807 flights in and out of the airport daily. In 2016, the FAA held San Diego as the 27th busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic with more than 20.7 million.Upon the ranking, San Diego Airport tweeted, "We’re thrilled to be ranked No. 1 U.S. Airport by [The Points Guy]! As excited as we are, we know there's work to be done on improving our Terminal 1 experience. That’s why we've started moving forward with plans to replace Terminal 1."Terminal 1 has been a stickler for many who travel through the region. The entry way to San Diego, opened in 1967, served more than 12 million travelers last year, the airport says.RELATED: Scripps La Jolla Hospitals listed as best in San Diego regionThe airport's planned revamp of Terminal 1 includes demolishing the current terminal and replacing it with a new three-level facility with 30 gates and possible commercial development, according to the airport's 2018 drafted plans.Portland International, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, and Sacramento International airports rounded our the top five in the list.Among the worst airports were Florida's Southwest Florida International, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, and Orlando International airports; Detroit Metropolitan Wayne, and Chicago Midway airports. 2250

A 552-carat yellow diamond was recently unearthed in Canada — the largest ever found in North America.Mining company Dominion Diamond Mines said in a press release on Thursday the diamond was discovered in October at the Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada's Northwest Territories. The "astonishing gemstone" measures 33.74 millimeters by 54.56 millimeters, the company said.It was uncovered in the initial screening process at Diavik's recovery plant, the company said. "Abrasion markings on the stone's surface attest to the difficult journey it underwent during recovery, and the fact that it remains intact is remarkable."Dominion Diamond Mines added the diamond will not be sold in its rough form, and it's too early to determine its value. The company will select a partner to cut and polish the stone.According to the company, this find exceeds a previous record held by the "Diavik Foxfire," a 187.7-carat diamond discovered at the same mine in 2015 by mining company Rio Tinto. Dominion owns 40% of the Diavik Diamond Mine. 1038
